Which Windows 11 Settings Should You Review After an Update?

Check Windows Update for a pending restart, then review Active hours, notification behavior and the privacy permissions you care about. Labels can vary by Windows 11 version.

After a Windows 11 update, check Windows Update for a pending restart, make sure Active hours fit your schedule, and review notifications and the app permissions that matter to you. These are useful checks—not proof that an update reset your settings. Paths and labels can vary between Windows 11 versions.

1. Confirm the update is finished

Open Settings > Windows Update. Look for a restart request or another update action. Some updates need a restart to finish installing, and Windows Update provides options to restart or schedule one. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ for restart guidance.

2. Check when Windows may restart

Set Active hours to match your routine

Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Windows 11 lets you have Windows adjust active hours automatically based on activity or choose the hours yourself. If you set them manually, choose the times you typically use the PC so an automatic restart is less likely to interrupt you. Microsoft explains the options in Keep your PC up to date with active hours.

3. Review notifications and Do Not Disturb

Open Settings > System > Notifications. Check whether the apps you rely on can show banners, appear in the notification center, play sounds, or display notifications on the lock screen. You can also review each app’s priority and the automatic conditions for Do Not Disturb.

Microsoft documents an option to turn on Do Not Disturb for the first hour after a Windows feature update. Decide whether that quiet period suits you: it may reduce interruptions, but it could also delay alerts you want to see. See Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows.

4. Check relevant privacy permissions

Open Settings > Privacy & security and review permissions that matter to you, such as location, camera, microphone, calendar, or contacts. Consider which apps need access and turn off permissions you do not want those apps to have.

These controls are not a complete inventory of every program’s access. Microsoft notes that desktop apps may not appear in the privacy lists and can access some data differently from Store apps. You can review and change privacy settings at any time; see Windows privacy settings that apps use.

5. If a setting or path looks different

Windows 11 setting names and categories can vary by version. Microsoft documents a transition on newer Windows 11 versions from the General privacy settings page to Recommendations & offers. If a path in an older guide does not match your PC, search for the setting in Settings or look under the current category labels; a missing label does not by itself mean something is broken. See Microsoft’s General privacy settings in Windows and Exploring Windows Settings.

6. Check other settings only if something changed for you

If the update coincides with a display, power, storage, accessibility, or account issue, inspect that relevant area in Settings and troubleshoot the specific change. These are optional checks, not a required audit after every update: Microsoft’s settings overview identifies those categories, but that does not establish that every update resets them.
