There is no universally safe list of Windows 11 services to disable for better performance. The right choice depends on your Windows edition, hardware, and which features you use—and disabling a service can break the feature it supports. Treat service changes as targeted troubleshooting: measure a specific problem, change one setting at a time, and reverse the change if the problem worsens or a needed feature stops working.
Will disabling Windows services make your PC faster?
It may reduce activity associated with a service, but that does not establish that your PC will feel faster or complete tasks sooner. Microsoft’s guidance explains that service defaults are chosen to balance performance, functionality, and security; it does not provide controlled benchmarks showing a general performance gain from disabling a standard set of Windows 11 services. A shorter process list is not, by itself, evidence of better performance.

Slowdowns can have different causes, including startup apps, storage, outdated software, or hardware limitations. Microsoft recommends investigating the particular symptom rather than applying a universal service “cleanup” list. Start with the change most closely connected to the problem, and compare the same task before and after.

Why Microsoft’s service recommendations do not make a universal Windows 11 list
Microsoft’s detailed service-by-service disable recommendations are written for Windows IoT Enterprise, not as a complete disable list for every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft cautions that other Windows 10 and 11 versions may have different services. Even where a service exists on your PC, the consequences depend on how you use its feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Connectivity: Includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and LAN for wireless and wired connections
- Memory: Features 16GB DDR4 RAM for smooth multitasking and performance
- Storage: Combines 500GB SSD and 1TB HDD for ample storage space
- Graphics: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 for crisp visuals and video playback
- Design: Sleek desktop tower with black color and slim profile for modern look
Microsoft says of the IoT Enterprise defaults: “The start type for each service was carefully chosen to provide a balance of performance, functionality, and security for the typical Windows user.” Use that guidance as context, not as permission to apply its settings to a different edition. Check the documentation’s edition scope before acting: Microsoft’s Windows IoT Enterprise service guidance.
How to decide whether a service change is appropriate
- Identify a specific symptom. Note what is slow or failing, when it happens, and how you can repeat the same task. A general wish to “reduce processes” is not a useful performance measure.
- Connect the symptom to a feature. Find out what the service supports and whether you rely on that feature. Do not disable a service just because its name is unfamiliar or it appears in a process list.
- Record its current state. Before changing anything, note the service’s startup type and status so you can restore them if needed.
- Make one reversible change. Avoid changing several services together; otherwise, you will not know which change caused a new problem or an improvement.
- Repeat the same check. Compare the original symptom under similar conditions. If it is unchanged, restore the prior setting. If a Windows feature breaks, restore the service rather than keeping the change for a theoretical process-count reduction.
For documented Windows configuration and startup troubleshooting, Microsoft warns that incorrect System Configuration changes can make Windows unstable or unable to start. Read its guidance before changing startup settings: System Configuration in Windows.
Windows Search: tune indexing before disabling the service
Windows Search supports searches across local, cloud, and web content. If you want Windows Search to work, Microsoft documents the Windows Search service as Running with startup type Automatic (Delayed Start). Some third-party optimizer apps disable it, so check its state if Search has stopped working; do not assume the service is expendable simply because an optimization tool changed it.

If indexing is the concern, narrow what Windows indexes rather than turning off the feature outright. Windows lets you select indexed locations and exclude folders, and offers controls for indexed file types. Microsoft notes that rebuilding the index can take up to 24 hours. See its instructions for Windows Search indexing and Windows Search troubleshooting.
Use clean boot to diagnose conflicts, not as a permanent optimization
If you suspect a non-Microsoft background service is causing a conflict, a clean boot can help isolate it. It is a temporary diagnostic method: Microsoft’s procedure hides Microsoft services, disables other services, and uses systematic testing to identify a possible conflict. It is not a recommendation to leave services disabled for routine performance gains.
Follow Microsoft’s clean boot instructions carefully, track the changes you make, and use the documented steps to return Windows to normal startup when testing is complete. Incorrect startup configuration can destabilize Windows or prevent it from starting.

Services not to disable as routine performance tweaks
- Diagnostic Policy Service: Microsoft marks this “Don’t disable” in its Windows IoT Enterprise guidance and says diagnostics will not function if the service is stopped. That recommendation is edition-specific, but it is a clear reason not to treat it as a generic cleanup target.
- Windows Update: Do not turn off updates to chase performance. Microsoft says updates provide current fixes and security patches; disabling them can leave Windows devices vulnerable.
- Windows License Manager Service and Software Protection Platform: Do not disable these as routine cleanup. Microsoft warns that doing so can prevent activation of genuine Windows and Store apps.
For these service-specific consequences and their edition scope, consult Microsoft’s service-configuration guidance rather than applying recommendations blindly across Windows editions.
What to try first when Windows 11 feels slow
Start with the performance checks that match the symptom. If the slowdown happens during sign-in, review unnecessary startup apps; Microsoft includes disabling unneeded startup apps among its performance guidance. If the problem is limited to search, adjust indexed locations or exclusions. If the issue appears tied to a background conflict, use a clean boot to diagnose it and then restore normal startup. For broader symptoms, consider whether storage, outdated software, or hardware limits better explain the slowdown.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 performance guidance covers several possible causes and approaches. Choose a check that relates to your actual symptom; there is no evidence here for a universal set of services whose removal reliably speeds up Windows 11.
