You do not need to install a long list of apps on a new Windows 11 laptop. First check what is already there: Windows includes Edge and Windows Security, and Microsoft’s Get Started app can introduce Windows features and the Microsoft Store. Add software only when it fills a real need—such as a backup workflow, work or school tools, creative software, or a game launcher.
What to check before installing anything
- Search the Start menu for the apps you already use; some may be preinstalled by the laptop maker or your school or employer.
- Open Get Started for Microsoft’s introduction to Windows 11 features and the Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s Get Started guidance explains the app’s role.
- Open Windows Security and check that protection is active. Windows Security uses Microsoft Defender Antivirus to help protect against viruses, malware, and other threats. Microsoft’s overview of Windows Security describes its built-in protections.
These checks help avoid installing duplicate apps before you know what the laptop already provides.

Which everyday apps are worth adding?
Browser: keep Edge or choose another
Microsoft Edge is included as Windows’ default browser, so a second browser is optional rather than a setup requirement. Install another only if you prefer its features, already use it on other devices, or want its ecosystem. For example, a Windows Central writer lists Chrome as a personal choice tied to familiarity and cross-device syncing—not as a universal recommendation. That writer’s November 11, 2025 list reflects individual preferences.
Backup and file access: choose a plan that fits
Decide where important files will live and how you will recover them if the laptop is lost or damaged. Microsoft presents OneDrive as a way to back up files and photos and access, edit, and share files across locations. Those are Microsoft’s product descriptions, not an independent evaluation; whether it fits depends on your account, storage needs, and preferred backup method. You can also choose another backup approach, but avoid assuming that installing a sync app alone creates a complete backup plan.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Work and school: install only what your access requires
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and OneNote may be useful for work, school, or personal organization. Microsoft lists these among its Microsoft 365 apps, but the apps available to you depend on your organization’s licenses. Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 Apps documentation covers app use and licensing context. Check whether your employer or school provides access, and distinguish using a web app from installing a desktop app; having a Microsoft account does not by itself establish which desktop apps or license you have.
Optional apps for specific workflows
These are examples for particular needs, not a required or independently tested ranking. The Windows Central writer’s preferred installs include PowerToys, GIMP, Steam, Heroic Games Launcher, WSL, and Spotify, based on personal use.

PowerToys for extra Windows controls
Consider PowerToys if you want additional window-management or keyboard workflows. It is an optional utility; most people can use Windows without it.

GIMP for photo editing
If the built-in tools are not enough for the photo-editing tasks you do, GIMP is one possible fuller-featured editor. The cited list gives it as the writer’s choice; it does not establish that it is best for every user or compare its capabilities with alternatives.
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
Game launchers for PC gaming
Install a launcher only if you use it to access games. Steam and Heroic Games Launcher are examples from the writer’s setup, not prerequisites for Windows gaming generally. Your choice depends on where your games are and which services you use.
WSL for development or Linux learning
Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is relevant if your development work or learning requires a Linux environment. If you do not have that workflow, there is no need to add it just because it appears on a first-install list.
