The right wide-angle lens for a Sony camera depends first on its mount and sensor format, then on how wide you need to shoot, how much light you need, and whether you prefer a zoom or a prime. For full-frame E-mount cameras, the Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G is a lightweight powered zoom option; the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM covers the same range with a wider maximum aperture but weighs more. For APS-C E-mount bodies, the Tamron 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD is an ultra-wide zoom designed for that format. These are different trade-offs, not a universal ranking.
Check your Sony camera’s mount and sensor format first
Sony’s E-mount lens system covers both APS-C and full-frame E-mount cameras, but sensor format changes the framing you get. Sony says a full-frame lens on an APS-C body produces a narrower angle of view than it does on a full-frame camera. That can be useful, but it means a lens’s focal-length label alone does not tell the whole story of how wide your pictures will look.

Full-frame E-mount: powered zoom and lighter carry
The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G (SELP1635G) is a full-frame E-mount powered zoom spanning 16–35mm. Sony lists its weight as 353 g. Its powered zoom makes it a distinct option if you specifically want motorized zoom operation; the F4 maximum aperture is the trade-off to consider against faster alternatives.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sony describes it as “the world’s lightest full frame F4 wide-angle power-zoom lens,” based on a Sony survey in March 2022 of constant-F4 wide-angle zoom lenses for 35mm full-frame sensors. That is a dated, manufacturer-scoped comparison, not an independently verified current market ranking. See Sony’s FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G specifications.
Full-frame E-mount: same span, wider maximum aperture
The Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM (SEL1635GM) covers the same nominal 16–35mm range. Its F2.8 maximum aperture is wider than F4, while Sony lists its weight at 680 g. The comparison is straightforward: both cover the same zoom span, but the F2.8 model trades a higher listed weight for a wider maximum aperture. Sony’s product page lists specifications at FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM.

APS-C E-mount: ultra-wide zoom
The Tamron 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD (B060) is identified as an APS-C Sony E-mount zoom. Tamron lists a constant F2.8 maximum aperture, 335 g weight and a 67 mm filter size. Keep the APS-C designation in view when comparing it with full-frame lenses: the formats do not produce the same angle of view on a given focal-length label. Tamron’s product information is at 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD.

The Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G (SEL20F18G) is a compact full-frame E-mount prime with a fixed 20mm focal length and F1.8 maximum aperture. A prime cannot zoom from a broad view to a tighter one, so choose it if 20mm suits your framing and you are comfortable moving or changing lenses rather than turning a zoom ring. Sony highlights it for landscapes, night scenes and starry skies in its wide-angle lens guide.

Third-party full-frame zooms
Two other full-frame E-mount zoom candidates have useful published weight specifications. Sigma’s March 2026 catalogue lists the 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary at 450 g. Tamron lists the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD for Sony E-mount at 420 g. Their ranges are not identical to the 16-35mm options, so compare the widest end and the amount of zoom reach you actually need, rather than treating weight as the only deciding factor. Current sale availability is not established here.
Specifications are from Sigma’s 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary catalogue page and Tamron’s 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD page.

Match the lens to your scenes and shooting habits
Landscapes, interiors and architecture
A wide angle can include more of a landscape or a small room, and perspective can make a narrow room feel more spacious or a tall building appear taller. That effect depends on your viewpoint as well as the lens. Check the frame edges before shooting: wide framing can pull distracting objects into the picture along with the scene you want. Sony’s wide-angle guide describes these uses and cautions against overlooking unwanted details in a wide composition.

Night scenes and starry skies
Sony identifies wide-angle lenses as useful for expansive landscapes and starry skies, and specifically recommends the FE 20mm F1.8 G for landscapes, night scenes and starry skies. Its fixed 20mm view and F1.8 maximum aperture make it a different choice from a zoom: you give up focal-length flexibility for a prime’s particular framing and aperture. Sony’s advice is manufacturer guidance, not independent comparative testing.
Video and powered zoom
If motorized zoom operation is important to your video workflow, the FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G is the powered-zoom candidate among the lenses covered here. Sony also notes quiet autofocus and close-up capability for video use when discussing the FE 20mm F1.8 G; those are manufacturer statements, not a side-by-side performance assessment.
Quick Recap
A practical buying decision
- Identify your body format and mount. Confirm the exact camera and lens combination in Sony’s compatibility guidance, then distinguish APS-C from full frame.
- Set your widest required view. Consider whether you need an ultra-wide perspective, such as the APS-C 11–20mm option, or a full-frame zoom beginning at 16mm.
- Decide how much zoom range matters. A 16–35mm zoom covers more range than the cited 16–28mm and 17–28mm alternatives; a 20mm prime has no zoom at all.
- Balance aperture and weight. The cited 16–35mm F2.8 GM is wider-aperture but heavier than the 16–35mm F4 powered zoom. Compare published weights against what you are willing to carry.
- Choose operation, not just specifications. Decide whether powered zoom is useful, or whether you are happy with a fixed focal length and moving to adjust composition.
- Check current availability and complete specifications. Confirm live price, regional stock, stabilization and other features for the exact model at the time of purchase; they are not all established in the product facts above.
