PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 routers, change the network name and password, choose the strongest security mode your router and devices support, and leave channel, channel width, and advanced Wi-Fi 6 settings at their defaults unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem. TP-Link says its settings are generally preconfigured for typical performance and security. Menus and options vary by model, hardware version, region, and firmware.
Which settings should you change first?
Start with the credentials people use to identify and join your network. Pick a recognizable network name that does not reveal personal details, and set a long, unique Wi-Fi password. If either value is still the factory default or the password may have been shared too widely, change it.

Changing the name or password while connected over Wi-Fi will disconnect the device you are using to manage the router. Reconnect it—and other wireless devices—with the new credentials after saving. TP-Link’s Wi-Fi settings guide explains the available controls; the exact interface depends on the router.

Which security mode should you use?
Use WPA3-Personal if the router and all the devices that need access support it. If older devices require compatibility, TP-Link documents WPA2-PSK [AES] and, on supported models, a WPA2/WPA3-Personal mode. Check the options in your router’s interface and model-specific guide before choosing. Avoid open security and legacy modes where possible.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
WPA3 is not automatically the practical choice if a device you need cannot connect to it. In that case, use a compatible option documented for your model rather than assuming all TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 routers expose the same modes.
Should you turn on Smart Connect?
Smart Connect uses one network name across bands and lets the router steer devices between them. Leave it enabled if a shared network name and automatic band assignment suit your household.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
If one device has a band-specific connection problem, temporarily separating the band names can help you test whether its behavior differs between bands. The preferred arrangement depends on your devices and how they behave; a single name is convenient, while separate names make band-specific testing easier.
Should you hide the network name?
Usually, no. Leave SSID broadcast on for ordinary use. Hiding the network name removes it from ordinary Wi-Fi scans, so people joining must enter the SSID manually. TP-Link describes this behavior but does not present hiding the name as a security measure.

- Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router - Up to 5400 Mbps WiFi for faster browsing, streaming, gaming and downloading, all at the same time(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps;5 GHz: 2402 Mbps;2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)
- WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
- Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
- Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
Should you change the channel or channel width?
Keep both on Auto to start. TP-Link describes Auto as the preset for channel width and says a manual channel change is generally unnecessary unless nearby access points are causing interference. A manual setting is best treated as a diagnostic test for an observed problem, not a guaranteed way to improve speed.
Channel and width choices depend on local radio conditions, the Wi-Fi band, and the router model. TP-Link’s slow-internet guidance gives example channel widths, but those examples are not universal recommended defaults. Do not copy a width or channel from another home without testing it in yours.

What about OFDMA, Target Wake Time, and other Wi-Fi 6 controls?
Leave advanced controls at their shipped settings unless your model’s guide or a specific troubleshooting case gives you a reason to change them. TP-Link notes that compatible clients are needed to fully benefit from OFDMA. Options such as OFDMA and Target Wake Time, their labels, and their behavior are not identical across TP-Link models.
The Archer AX72 V1 guide is one model-specific reference, not a description of every TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 router. Check the guide and firmware notes for your router’s exact hardware version before changing advanced settings.

How to change settings without losing access
TP-Link says settings can be changed through the router’s web management page or, on compatible models, the Tether app. Web addresses and menu paths vary, so use your router’s support page and guide for the correct hardware version rather than relying on a universal path.
- Open the router’s support page and select the guide for your exact model and hardware version.
- Sign in through the web management page or open the Tether app if your model supports it, then locate the wireless settings described in that guide.
- Record the original values before testing a channel, width, or other setting.
- Change one setting at a time and save it. If you changed the SSID or password, reconnect the managing device and other clients using the new credentials.
- Compare the connection before and after the change, then restore the original value if the result is worse or does not address the problem.
How to troubleshoot a Wi-Fi problem methodically
There is no single channel, width, or band arrangement that fits every home. Make one change at a time and compare the same conditions before and after. These checks can help narrow down the cause:
- How many devices are affected? Check whether the problem occurs on one device or across the household.
- Which band is affected? If your setup lets you distinguish bands, compare the affected band with the other one.
- What kind of problem is it? Separate connection drops or instability from slow throughput; they are different symptoms.
- Did the change help? Compare performance before and after a single adjustment, and restore the original setting if it did not help.
These comparisons help identify where a problem may lie; they do not guarantee a speed increase from any particular configuration.
