A wrist-worn wearable, such as a smartwatch, is the clearest choice if you want a display that does not sit in front of your eyes. That is a practical conclusion based on where the screen is worn—not proof that a watch never affects awareness. Looking down to read it still draws your attention away from the world around you.
How wearable displays can affect your view
The main difference is where the display sits and how it presents information. A wrist-worn screen stays outside your eye-level view until you look at it. Smart glasses put optics or digital content near the eyes, while immersive headsets can replace or substantially obscure the surrounding scene.

Even a see-through display can compete with what you are looking at. Interference depends on the display’s position and size, the content, how immersive the device is, what you are doing, and whether using it requires you to look away.

| Wearable type | Where the display appears | What it means for the surrounding view |
|---|---|---|
| Smartwatch or other wrist-worn wearable | On the wrist, outside the direct line of sight | Does not place a display in front of the eyes, but reading it requires looking down and can divide attention. |
| Smart glasses | Some models add displays in the lenses; others may provide hands-free information without a lens display | The real scene may remain visible, but overlays or notifications can compete for attention. See-through does not mean interference-free. |
| Head-worn display | Optics or content near the eyes; configuration can be monocular or binocular | Effects vary with the display design and task. Aviation simulator findings show that workload and visual performance can be affected in some configurations. |
| Immersive or mixed-reality headset | Digital imagery is presented through a headset; VR may replace the surrounding view | Can reduce awareness of the environment. The degree depends on whether the experience is an overlay or an immersive simulated scene. |
What to know about smart glasses and see-through displays
The Australian eSafety Commissioner says smart glasses commonly include cameras and microphones, and some models add displays in their lenses. The form factor can provide hands-free information or translation. Accessibility uses include object descriptions for blind or low-vision users and live speech-to-text for deaf users. Those benefits do not establish that lens displays never interfere with vision. Australian eSafety Commissioner: smart glasses.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A display can leave much of the scene visible and still draw attention from it. The amount and placement of content matter, as does the task: a brief prompt is different from information that requires sustained reading. There is no basis here for treating all smart glasses as equally unobtrusive.
What head-worn display studies show—and what they do not
A January 2026 Federal Aviation Administration Office of Aerospace Medicine simulator report, DOT/FAA/AM-26/02, studied 24 pilot crews flying approach and landing scenarios with HUD, binocular head-worn display (HWD), and monocular HWD configurations. The FAA reported that a monocular HWD may not substantially affect flightpath and energy management in the tested scenarios, but pilots had higher workload than with binocular HWD and HUD. The report also found effects on landing performance and runway-incursion detection associated with display optics and monocular versus binocular configuration. These are aviation simulator results, not evidence of everyday consumer outcomes. FAA Office of Aerospace Medicine technical reports.

A separate January 2026 FAA report examined a monocular HWD with an enhanced flight vision system. It involved 11 pilot crews comprising 22 Airline Transport Pilot captains. The report described elevated workload, small increases in glideslope and runway-centerline deviation, and pilots’ reports that EFVS imagery interfered with natural vision during flare, landing, and rollout when there was no pilot-flying kill switch. These findings concern specialized flight operations and should not be generalized to consumer wearables. FAA report on pilot performance, workload, and usability.
Why immersive headsets can obscure surroundings
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes augmented reality (AR) as a real-world experience with simulated imagery overlaid or mixed with the world, as seen through a camera or display. Virtual reality (VR), by contrast, may completely replace the user’s surrounding view with an immersive simulated environment. The FDA lists possible risks including information overload, dizziness, fatigue, and effects on vision. FDA: augmented reality and virtual reality medical devices.

For Apple Vision Pro, the manufacturer warns that immersive experiences may block the user’s ability to see their surroundings. Its safety guidance says not to use the device while operating a vehicle, bicycle, or heavy machinery, or in uncontrolled environments where safety requires attention. That is product-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every wearable. Apple Vision Pro safety information.
Why an open peripheral view is not a safety guarantee
Keeping some peripheral vision open does not necessarily make a head-worn display safe for every activity. Meta’s developer guidance recommends placing head-locked content to the side of the field of view and avoiding the central and lower areas, where content could cover obstacles. It also warns that an open peripheral design may not reveal hazards when a user is immersed or using light blockers. Meta Horizon comfort design guidelines.

Choose by activity, not just device category
- To keep a screen out of your direct view: choose a wrist-worn display and check it only when it is safe to look away.
- For hands-free information: consider whether glasses show content in the lenses, where it appears, and how much attention it takes to read.
- For a head-worn display: consider whether it is monocular or binocular, how much of the scene it covers, and whether overlays could obscure obstacles.
- For driving, cycling, machinery, or other safety-sensitive tasks: do not assume that see-through optics or open peripherals preserve adequate awareness. Follow the device’s safety guidance and the rules that apply to the activity.
No cited source directly compares smartwatch, smart-glasses, and headset interference in everyday consumer use, and none establishes that a device categorically cannot affect perception. The smartwatch answer is based on display placement, not a guarantee of attention or situational awareness.
