The idea was promising, but the 2013 report described an engineering concept—not a production-ready saw or a proven reduction in manufacturing waste.
How the proposed nano-saw was meant to save silicon
Silicon ingots are sliced into thin wafers used in photovoltaic cells and semiconductor devices. Every cut removes a strip of material, called kerf. A narrower wire could make a narrower kerf, leaving more of the ingot available as usable wafers.

The 2013 proposal combined two materials: a yarn made from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the wire substrate, and deposited diamond particles as the abrasive cutting surface. It was distinct from ordinary steel wire and from established diamond-coated steel wire. The hoped-for benefit was less silicon lost to kerf, potentially improving material use and manufacturing costs. The report did not demonstrate those gains in industrial production. Why coating nanotube yarn with diamond was difficult
Making the wire involved more than attaching abrasive particles. The environment used to grow diamond can also etch non-diamond carbon, threatening the carbon-nanotube substrate. Experiments described in the 2013 report identified an oxide buffer layer that could protect the substrate while diamond grew. As materials scientist Nick Glumac of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, put it: “You need a buffer layer to protect the non-diamond substrates.”

Protection during deposition was only one challenge. The proposal also depended on producing continuous CNT yarn, controlling the coating process, and ensuring the diamond stayed attached while the wire performed reliably under cutting conditions. Stephen Hawkins, identified in the report as a CSIRO representative, said that production-scale use would require demonstration of substantially improved performance and that scaling and simplifying CNT-yarn and coating production were significant technical challenges.
How much silicon is lost during wafer sawing?
A 2015 WISE / Government of India renewable-energy manufacturing report gives the contextual estimate that “Roughly, 50% of silicon is wasted while sawing ingot into wafers.” That figure is a broad estimate in Addressing the Challenges of RE Manufacturing in India: Horizon 2032, not a measurement of the nanotube-wire proposal or a prediction of how much it would save. How it differed from existing wafer-saw wires
Diamond abrasive was not itself new to wafer sawing. Conventional approaches include steel wire used with silicon-carbide slurry and steel wire carrying diamond abrasive. The proposed configuration changed the wire substrate to CNT yarn; it did not establish that existing methods had been displaced.

To decide whether a new wire would be useful in a factory, manufacturers would need comparable results for kerf width, cut quality, subsurface damage, wire strength and continuity, abrasive adhesion, cutting speed, reliability, consumables, and compatibility with installed saws. The cited accounts do not provide that comparison. A related SINTEF paper discusses silicon kerf powders recovered from sawing, but it is not a test of the CNT-yarn nano-saw. What the 2013 report does—and does not—show
The concept targets a real source of material loss: kerf removed when ingots are sliced into wafers. But the evidence in the cited reporting establishes a proposed materials design and its manufacturing obstacles, not a production deployment or a verified reduction in silicon waste. It provides no measured kerf width or quantified improvement in wafer yield. The strongest conclusion is that diamond-coated CNT yarn was an intriguing engineering idea whose practical performance and production-scale reliability remained to be demonstrated.
