Which VS Code Extensions Should React Developers Install in 2026?

Start with ESLint and Prettier when your React project uses them, then add optional VS Code extensions only for the project technologies and workflow needs you have.

For a React project that uses ESLint and Prettier, start with those two extensions. Add other tools only when they match your project or workflow: Tailwind CSS IntelliSense for Tailwind projects, Jest for Jest projects, and optional helpers for Git history, diagnostics, or snippets. VS Code already includes JavaScript debugging, IntelliSense, and code navigation, so a large extension pack is not a requirement.

Start with the extensions your project actually uses

React’s editor setup guidance points JavaScript developers to ESLint for linting and Prettier for formatting. These extensions connect the editor to tools and conventions used by a project; they do not replace the project’s configuration. Check the repository before installing anything, and follow its existing scripts and team rules.

ESLint: linting in the editor

ESLint integrates ESLint diagnostics into VS Code. It is a baseline choice when the project uses ESLint. The repository still needs ESLint installed and configured; the extension does not create the project’s lint rules. React’s editor setup also advises enabling the React Hooks rules in the project configuration.

Prettier: consistent formatting

Prettier – Code formatter is useful when the team uses Prettier. React’s setup guide describes configuring formatting on save. If ESLint formatting rules conflict with Prettier, separate formatting from linting rather than letting two tools compete over the same rules.

ESLint and Prettier have distinct jobs: one reports code issues according to lint rules, while the other formats code. The precise setup belongs to the project, so check its configuration before changing editor settings.

Choose optional extensions by use case

These tools address specific preferences or project technologies; none is required simply because an application uses React.

Extension Consider it when What it adds
ES7+ React/Redux/React-Native snippets You regularly use its templates and typing shortcuts. Code snippets for common patterns. A snippet is a shortcut, not a guarantee of best-practice architecture.
Tailwind CSS IntelliSense The project uses Tailwind CSS. Editor assistance for Tailwind CSS. React does not require Tailwind.
GitLens — Git supercharged You want additional Git history and repository context in the editor. Git-oriented views and context beyond the source control features already in VS Code.
Error Lens You prefer diagnostics to be more visible in the editor. More prominent display of diagnostics reported by language tools; it is not a new linter.
Jest The repository uses Jest and you want its test workflow in VS Code. Jest workflow integration. Choose testing tools based on the project’s actual test setup.
JavaScript (ES6) code snippets You want general JavaScript snippets and prefer this extension’s templates to built-in or React-specific snippets. Additional JavaScript snippets. VS Code already includes built-in snippets, so avoid installing overlapping packs without a reason.
npm IntelliSense You want autocomplete suggestions for npm module imports. Import and require autocomplete for npm modules, as described in Microsoft’s JavaScript extensions guide.

Remember what VS Code already provides

Microsoft’s JavaScript extension guide says VS Code includes JavaScript debugging, IntelliSense, and code navigation. Those built-in capabilities cover important parts of everyday React work, so add extensions to fill a genuine gap rather than duplicating existing features.

Install and manage extensions carefully

  1. In VS Code, open the Extensions view using the Activity Bar’s Extensions icon or the View > Extensions menu.
  2. Search for the extension by name. Open its details page and verify the publisher and extension ID before installing.
  3. Review the listing’s README, dependencies, and changelog when available. VS Code’s extension details expose these items; current versions and maintenance can change.
  4. Use the details page to install, update, disable, or uninstall the extension. Keep only the tools that serve your project or workflow.

VS Code notes that extensions have the same permissions as VS Code itself and prompts users to trust third-party publishers when installing. Treat publisher verification and a quick review of the listing as part of installation, not as optional polish. See VS Code’s Extension Marketplace documentation for the current management guidance.

Share team choices without prescribing personal preferences

For extensions that directly support a repository’s conventions, teams can add workspace recommendations in .vscode/extensions.json. VS Code documents this feature and uses ESLint and Prettier as examples. Recommendations help teammates discover relevant tools without turning personal preferences—such as extra Git views or inline diagnostics—into a project requirement.

A practical setup for a React repository

  1. Check the project’s package files, scripts, and existing editor settings to see whether it uses ESLint, Prettier, Tailwind CSS, or Jest.
  2. Install the corresponding editor integrations only for tools the repository actually uses.
  3. Add optional snippet, Git-history, or diagnostic extensions only if they address a workflow preference not already covered by VS Code.
  4. Ask the team to document shared recommendations in the workspace, while leaving individual workflow preferences optional.

For current recommendations and setup details, consult React’s Editor Setup guide, Microsoft’s JavaScript extensions guide, and each extension’s live Marketplace listing. No comparative ranking or hands-on test establishes a definitive set of fifteen best extensions; the useful choice depends on the project and the work you want the editor to support.
