Odoo does not publish one universal VPS minimum: the right size depends on peak concurrent users, installed modules, worker count, database activity and file storage.

Run Odoo in multi-process mode behind an HTTPS-terminating reverse proxy. PostgreSQL can share the VPS initially, while Docker can package the services without reducing their CPU, memory, storage or security requirements.

What determines the VPS size?
Size the server for the busiest period, not the number of employee accounts in your database. A company may have 200 users but only 20 people actively loading pages at once; another may have 40 users who all run reports at month-end. Use peak concurrent web users as the first input, then adjust for the workload created by your modules and automation.
- Peak concurrency: count users who are simultaneously opening forms, saving records, searching or running reports.
- Enabled applications: accounting, inventory, manufacturing, point of sale, helpdesk and website features can create very different database and compute loads.
- Scheduled work: imports, email queues, stock valuation, payment synchronization, backups and custom cron jobs compete with interactive requests.
- Reports and computed fields: complex PDF reports, large searches and poorly optimized custom code can consume considerably more CPU and RAM than ordinary form views.
- Growth: attachments, images, documents and database indexes require persistent SSD/NVMe capacity and additional I/O headroom.
These inputs matter more than a provider’s plan label such as “business” or “premium.” Compare the actual vCPU performance, memory, disk I/O policy and backup options.

Use Odoo’s worker guidance as a sizing baseline
Production Odoo should use its multi-process server. The default threaded mode is intended for simple development or demonstrations, not a busy production installation.
Odoo’s 2026 documentation gives the theoretical rule of thumb (#CPU × 2) + 1 for the number of workers. Its example guidance treats one worker as approximately six concurrent users. These figures are planning estimates, not a capacity guarantee: custom modules, slow SQL, external integrations and report workloads can reduce the result.

Do not automatically configure the maximum calculated value. Every worker consumes memory, and the operating system, PostgreSQL, reverse proxy, monitoring and cron jobs also need resources. Treat the formula as a ceiling and sanity check, then validate with realistic traffic.
Estimate worker memory
Odoo estimates a heavy worker at about 1 GB RAM and a lighter worker at about 150 MB, assuming well-designed computed fields and SQL. The documentation’s workload assumption is 20% heavy requests and 80% light requests. That mix averages roughly 0.32 GB per worker before PostgreSQL and the operating system are counted.
For a worked 60-user example, Odoo describes a 4-CPU/8-thread machine with eight HTTP workers and one cron worker and estimates about 3 GB for Odoo itself. That is not a provider-backed minimum: a VPS still needs memory for PostgreSQL, the OS, proxy, caches, monitoring and bursts. An 8 GB VPS is therefore a more sensible starting envelope for that class of installation than a 4 GB machine, while a busy database or heavy reports may require more.

Practical VPS starting points
The following are planning starting points derived from the worker and memory guidance. They are not official Odoo minimum plans or performance guarantees. Test your own modules and peak workflows before committing to a production size.

For every tier, check whether vCPUs are shared or guaranteed, the processor generation, storage IOPS, backup and snapshot terms, bandwidth limits, IPv4/IPv6 availability and the data-center region. Regional latency affects browser requests and integrations; a large plan with slow or oversubscribed storage can perform worse than a smaller plan on faster hardware.
Can Odoo and PostgreSQL run on one VPS?
Yes. A single VPS is the simplest architecture for a small installation. When Odoo has no database host configured, its default local PostgreSQL connection uses a Unix socket. Keeping both services together avoids network latency and a second server to patch and monitor.
When one server is appropriate
- The user count and database size are modest.
- You can reserve enough RAM for PostgreSQL in addition to Odoo workers.
- A single-server failure is acceptable or you have tested backups and restoration.
- PostgreSQL access can remain private rather than exposed to the internet.
When to separate PostgreSQL
Move PostgreSQL to a second VPS or managed service when database contention, isolation requirements, scaling policy or operational controls justify the added complexity. Odoo documents network connections and SSH tunneling as options. Use encryption where appropriate, restrict the database firewall to the Odoo host, and allow only the required PostgreSQL port and users.
Separating the database does not remove sizing work: the database host needs its own CPU, RAM, fast persistent storage, backups and monitoring. Measure query latency and I/O before deciding that a second machine will solve the problem.

What Docker changes—and what it does not
Docker is a packaging and deployment choice. The official Odoo image runs Odoo and PostgreSQL as separate containers and mounts persistent storage for PostgreSQL data. The image requires a running PostgreSQL server, whether that server is another container on the same VPS or an external service.
Benefits
- Compose files make service versions and environment variables repeatable.
- Application and database processes are separated operationally even when they share a host.
- Persistent volumes can keep PostgreSQL data outside the disposable container layer.
- Upgrades and rollbacks can be planned around explicit image versions.
Responsibilities that remain
- Allocate enough CPU and RAM for Odoo, PostgreSQL, the kernel, proxy and background jobs.
- Use durable volumes and test restoring them; deleting a container must not delete the database.
- Patch the host, images and dependencies, and protect the Docker socket and management interfaces.
- Configure HTTPS, firewall rules, secrets, logging, monitoring and backups.
Container overhead is not a substitute for capacity planning. A Dockerized installation on an undersized VPS will still queue requests, exhaust memory or stall on disk I/O.
Production network and HTTPS requirements
Place Odoo behind a web server or reverse proxy that terminates HTTPS with a valid certificate. Odoo explicitly recommends this arrangement to prevent eavesdropping on cleartext communication. Enable Odoo’s proxy mode so it correctly interprets forwarded scheme and client information.
Live chat and websocket routing
If you enable live chat, route websocket requests to Odoo’s live-chat worker through the proxy. Ordinary HTTP proxying alone can leave chat sessions disconnected even though the main application loads. Confirm websocket upgrade headers, the correct backend port and timeout settings in your proxy configuration.
Database account and exposure
Use a non-superuser PostgreSQL account for Odoo. Keep PostgreSQL bound to a private interface or Unix socket when it is co-located, and apply firewall rules before opening any remote connection. Do not expose the PostgreSQL service broadly to the internet.

Storage, backups and operational headroom
Choose SSD or NVMe storage with documented I/O characteristics. Odoo’s database, indexes, filestore attachments, temporary report files and PostgreSQL write-ahead log all generate disk activity. Capacity planning should include current database size, attachment growth, at least one local backup window and the space required for upgrades or restores.
- Backups: keep automated database and filestore backups separate from the VPS, retain multiple restore points and perform a test restore.
- Snapshots: verify whether snapshots are crash-consistent, how long they are retained and whether they are stored in another failure domain.
- Monitoring: watch RAM and swap, CPU steal time, disk latency, filesystem space, PostgreSQL connections, worker response time and failed cron jobs.
- Headroom: avoid running permanently at the provider’s memory or storage limit; upgrades and month-end jobs need burst capacity.
Bandwidth is usually less important than latency and storage for ordinary browser use, but large imports, backups, images and integrations can make transfer limits relevant.

- Inventory the workload: record peak concurrent users, applications, custom modules, integrations, cron frequency, report types and current database/filestore growth.
- Choose a worker target: apply
(#CPU × 2) + 1, then reserve capacity for cron and avoid exceeding available RAM. - Calculate memory: use Odoo’s 1 GB heavy-worker and 150 MB light-worker estimates as a rough model, then add PostgreSQL, OS, proxy, monitoring and safety margin.
- Build a staging copy: restore a representative database and filestore, with anonymized data where required.
- Replay peak tasks: have concurrent users open and save the heaviest forms, run reports, process imports and trigger scheduled jobs together.
- Observe bottlenecks: distinguish CPU saturation, memory pressure, PostgreSQL locks, slow queries and disk latency instead of increasing RAM blindly.
- Test failure recovery: restore the database and attachments on a clean VPS and document the time required to resume service.
Use the results to set worker counts and upgrade thresholds. A plan is adequate only when it handles your measured peak with observable headroom, not merely because its advertised worker count matches a formula.
Common sizing mistakes
Counting total users instead of concurrent users
Worker planning is tied to simultaneous requests. Model the busiest sales, warehouse, accounting or payroll period and include automated jobs running at the same time.
Using threaded mode in production
Threaded mode is suitable for simple development or demonstrations. Production installations need the multi-process server and a deliberate worker configuration.
Giving every CPU to Odoo
PostgreSQL, cron, proxy encryption, backups and monitoring all compete for CPU. The worker formula is theoretical and should not consume the entire machine’s resources.
Ignoring custom code and SQL
Worker memory estimates assume well-designed computed fields and SQL. A single inefficient query or report can dominate response time; profile and fix it before buying a larger VPS.
Putting database data in ephemeral container storage
Docker containers can be replaced. PostgreSQL data must live on a persistent volume covered by tested backups.
Exposing Odoo without a secure proxy
Terminate HTTPS with a valid certificate, enable proxy mode and apply firewall restrictions. Add websocket routing when live chat is enabled.
