Check the current BBC terms before proceeding; the ranking is a dated review, not a promise of access.
First, know the BBC’s rules
The BBC Terms of Use dated June 30, 2017 say that accessing content from outside the UK that a person is not allowed to access includes “using a VPN service so you can watch BBC iPlayer when you’re outside the UK” (section 7(a)). The document also says a TV Licence is needed to watch or record live TV, or watch or download BBC iPlayer programmes, while in the UK, Channel Islands, or Isle of Man. A UK TV Licence does not grant permission to watch from abroad. Check the BBC’s current terms, since the cited document is dated.

A VPN subscription does not include a BBC account, subscription, or TV Licence. The BBC’s own access requirements and territorial rules still apply.
How the four options compare
The ranking below is TechRadar’s, based on its review last updated July 16, 2026. Its contributors, Rob Dunne and Dan Sung, tested with a Lenovo laptop and an iPhone 13, connecting to the closest UK server and trying another after a failure. These are reviewer findings, not our tests or a guarantee of future access. BBC detection and VPN service behavior can change.

| Provider | TechRadar rank and reported iPlayer result | UK network figures in that review | Notable device or connection detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 1st; TechRadar reported successful tests | 440 servers across four UK locations | Review result conflicts with NordVPN Support’s stated position; see below |
| ExpressVPN | 3rd; favorable app experience in the review | Four UK locations; server count not stated by TechRadar | Review notes app availability for Apple TV and Fire TV Stick |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | 4th | Three UK city locations; server count not stated by TechRadar | TechRadar notes broad device compatibility and unlimited simultaneous connections |
| Proton VPN | 5th; streaming succeeded after changing servers | 36 servers across two UK locations | TechRadar says the free tier is not ideal for streaming |

What to know about each provider
NordVPN
TechRadar ranked NordVPN first and reported successful tests, but NordVPN Support says BBC services, including iPlayer, cannot be watched while connected to NordVPN. The support page also suggests selecting a UK server and troubleshooting by changing servers or clearing the cache. Because the provider’s guidance directly conflicts with the reviewer’s test, its ranking is especially uncertain as a guide to present-day access.
Rank #2

Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*

ExpressVPN
TechRadar placed ExpressVPN third and described its app experience favorably, noting Apple TV and Fire TV Stick support in the review. That is a reviewer assessment, not a guarantee that iPlayer will work on those devices or networks now.
Private Internet Access
TechRadar ranked PIA fourth, noted compatibility across many device types, and reported unlimited simultaneous connections. It listed three UK city locations but did not state a UK server count.
Rank #3
- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
Proton VPN
TechRadar ranked Proton VPN fifth. Its test account says an initial Manchester connection produced grainy picture quality; reconnecting to another Manchester server resolved the issue. That example shows why a successful session on one server should not be treated as a repeatable result. The review also says Proton VPN’s free tier is not ideal for streaming.
Choose based on your device and tolerance for uncertainty
- For a built-in app route: Check whether the provider currently supports your specific TV, streaming device, phone, or computer. TechRadar noted Apple TV and Fire TV Stick app support for ExpressVPN and describes broad device compatibility for PIA, but device support changes.
- If you are considering NordVPN: Weigh TechRadar’s positive test against NordVPN Support’s contrary statement rather than relying on the ranking alone.
- If you need several simultaneous connections: TechRadar specifically reports unlimited simultaneous connections for PIA. Confirm the current plan terms directly with the provider.
- Do not select on server counts alone: The counts are dated, and even TechRadar’s Proton VPN test needed a server change to improve picture quality.
TechRadar also reported test-specific speed results, including 1,521 Mbps on Proton VPN using WireGuard, 7% for ExpressVPN, and 10% for NordVPN. These are that review’s results under its test conditions, not expected speeds or a BBC streaming guarantee for your connection.
Rank #4

App setup and the optional router path
When a compatible app is available, installing it on the device you intend to use is the more direct setup route. TechRadar’s October 1, 2026 guide also describes installing a VPN app on Android TV. Router configuration is an alternative for some setups where the device cannot conveniently run the provider’s app; it is not required for everyone. A VPN-compatible travel router may be relevant only if it supports your provider and streaming device, so check compatibility before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm that your device is supported by the VPN provider and that the provider has UK server locations available.
- Install the provider’s app on the device, or configure a compatible router if the device cannot use the app.
- Connect to a UK location, then check the BBC’s current terms and access requirements before opening iPlayer.
- If the provider’s own guidance supports troubleshooting, try a different UK server or clear the browser cache. A change may improve a connection, but it does not ensure access.
Bottom line on the 2026 list
TechRadar’s four-provider ranking offers a dated snapshot, not a dependable promise that any VPN will work abroad. The BBC terms cited here explicitly restrict VPN use to access iPlayer outside the UK, and NordVPN’s support guidance conflicts with the positive test result in the ranking. Treat the list as context for comparing device support and reported testing, not as authorization or a guarantee.
