How to install a VPN on Shield TV
Shield TV uses Android TV and provides access to Google Play apps. NVIDIA documents internet connections over Wi-Fi or optional Ethernet, so installing a VPN app does not by itself require a separate physical product. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV guide covers its app and network setup.

- On Shield, open Google Play and look for the provider’s Android TV app. NordVPN also links installation instructions from its Shield setup page. Availability can depend on your Google Play region and device.
- Open the app and sign in. NordVPN documents account validation using a QR code or a numeric code entered through a remote-friendly flow.
- When Android asks to approve the VPN connection, review and accept the system prompt if you want the app to create the connection.

ExpressVPN

Which app settings matter on a TV?
A TV interface is often navigated with a remote, so focus on settings that solve a concrete need rather than changing several options at once. NordVPN documents these controls for its Android TV app:

- Custom DNS: NordVPN says this overrides its DNS and warns it can cause issues with streaming services. Leave DNS at its default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
Start with default settings, test the app or service you care about, and change one setting only when troubleshooting a specific problem. This makes it easier to identify whether a change helped.

Will a VPN slow down streaming on Shield TV?
A VPN can affect a connection, but the cited Shield setup pages provide no comparable, independently measured speed tests for these apps. They therefore do not support a numerical estimate or a claim that one provider streams faster on Shield.
Actual results can depend on your internet connection, the VPN server and location, the service’s own behavior, and other network conditions. Try the service and location you plan to use on your own connection; compatibility documentation alone cannot predict the result.

Does a Shield-compatible VPN guarantee access to Netflix or other services?
No. An app working on Shield means the device can run the VPN app; it does not establish that a streaming service will accept VPN traffic or show a particular catalog from your location. Services and VPN behavior can change, so test the exact streaming apps and locations you use.
