Which VPN Fits Your Priorities? Five Picks Compared

NordVPN leads on broad speed evidence, while Proton VPN, Mullvad, Windscribe, and ExpressVPN suit distinct needs. Compare audit scope, limitations, and dated pricing snapshots before choosing.

NordVPN is the strongest all-around choice in this shortlist for readers who prioritize speed, while Mullvad is the clearest fit for privacy-conscious users who value minimal account information. Proton VPN, Windscribe, and ExpressVPN round out five options for different priorities. There is no universal fastest or most private VPN: performance changes with protocol, device, route, and test setup, and a privacy audit supports only the systems and period it actually examined.

How to choose among the five VPNs

Use-case labels are more useful than a single overall ranking. The speed figures below come from independent reviewers’ testing, not a guarantee of what your connection will achieve. Security.org says it tested more than 50 VPNs over nine months, with 10 speed tests per VPN; its January 2026 figures are tied to that testing setup. Security.org’s VPN comparison and Tom’s Guide’s VPN testing use different methods, so their results should not be treated as one shared leaderboard.

VPN Best fit Evidence and trade-offs
NordVPN Strong overall speed and broad appeal Security.org measured 5.78% download and 4.11% upload speed loss in its January 2026 tests. Tom’s Guide measured an average 1,249 Mbps on a nearby East US route and 688 Mbps from East US to the UK using NordLynx in March 2026. Neither result predicts an individual user’s speed.
Proton VPN Speed-focused users and people considering a free tier Security.org measured 8.18% download and 4.08% upload speed loss in January 2026. The free plan has important feature and audit-scope caveats; it is not equivalent to the paid plan.
Mullvad Privacy-first users seeking minimal signup information Account creation uses a generated number and does not require an email address; cash and cryptocurrency are accepted. It permits five simultaneous connections, supports WireGuard, and has streaming and port-forwarding limitations.
Windscribe Users who want protocol choice and a configurable plan RTINGS describes support for WireGuard and OpenVPN, plus a Build-a-Plan option listed at $3 per month in its reviewed snapshot. Confirm current availability and terms; unlimited use at the same value requires an annual commitment according to RTINGS.
ExpressVPN Ease of setup across platforms TechRadar’s reviewed snapshot listed a two-year Basic plan at $2.99 per month. Its Lightway speed results vary by platform, underscoring that protocol and device matter. The snapshot is not a guaranteed offer or renewal rate.

Independent rankings reflect different methods and priorities: Security.org names NordVPN its overall pick and Proton VPN its speed pick; RTINGS favors Windscribe and Mullvad for privacy-focused readers; TechRadar highlights Proton VPN’s privacy positioning. Those views are useful context, not a combined score.

1. NordVPN: best all-around speed evidence

NordVPN is a reasonable starting point if you want a broadly capable paid VPN and place particular weight on speed. In Security.org’s January 2026 testing, its download slowdown was 5.78% and upload slowdown 4.11%. Tom’s Guide’s March 2026 testing reported averages of 1,249 Mbps on a nearby East US route and 688 Mbps on an East US-to-UK route using NordLynx. Tom’s Guide cautions that one test cannot predict another person’s result: local internet service, server choice, device, congestion, and protocol all affect speed.

Security.org selects NordVPN as its overall VPN pick. Tom’s Guide reports a no-logging audit in February 2026, but an audit should be described by its actual scope and period, not treated as proof of absolute anonymity. Before subscribing, review the provider’s current privacy policy and the audit documentation for the plan and systems you intend to use.

2. Proton VPN: a speed-oriented option with a useful free tier

Proton VPN is a strong candidate if speed is high on your list and you want the option of trying a free plan. Security.org measured 8.18% download speed loss and 4.08% upload speed loss in January 2026. TechRadar also emphasizes Proton VPN’s privacy positioning. These are separate editorial assessments, not evidence that every feature or plan has been independently audited to the same scope.

What the free plan does and does not offer

RTINGS says Proton VPN Free provides unlimited usage, but limits country selection and excludes torrenting. RTINGS also flags limited scope in the free plan’s latest audit and ambiguity in policy wording. Treat the free service as a constrained way to assess whether the app suits you, not as an assurance that it matches the paid plan’s locations, features, or privacy evidence. Check the current plan terms before relying on it for a particular task.

Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*

  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.

3. Mullvad: best for low-information account setup

Mullvad stands out for people who want to share little identifying information when creating an account. RTINGS says signup does not require an email address: the service generates an account number, and it accepts cash or cryptocurrency. This reduces the personal details needed to open an account; it does not make activity anonymous or protect against every threat.

The compromises matter. RTINGS reports a five-device limit, WireGuard-only support, no port forwarding, and streaming services that can recognize and block Mullvad IP addresses. Choose it for its account approach and privacy-focused use, not when reliable access to a particular streaming catalog or port forwarding is essential.

4. Windscribe: best for a configurable plan

Windscribe is worth considering if you want protocol choice and a plan that can be tailored to selected locations. RTINGS describes support for WireGuard and OpenVPN and lists a Build-a-Plan option at $3 per month in its 2026 pricing snapshot. That is a reviewed price, not a verified current checkout or renewal quote. RTINGS also notes that unlimited usage at the same value requires an annual commitment.

RTINGS’ privacy comparison favors Windscribe for privacy-focused readers. As with any provider, check what an audit actually covered and read the current policy; a broad privacy reputation does not substitute for evidence about specific systems and practices.

5. ExpressVPN: best for ease of use

ExpressVPN is a candidate for readers who place a premium on straightforward setup. TechRadar describes it as especially easy to use and reported a $2.99-per-month price for a two-year Basic plan in its 2026 review snapshot. This is not a guaranteed current offer or renewal rate, and the evidence does not establish a geography-wide checkout price. Confirm the full term, total charge, and renewal terms shown where you live.

TechRadar’s results for Lightway differ by platform, including a Windows Lightway Turbo result. That variation is a reminder to look for tests on a platform and protocol relevant to your own devices rather than assuming one speed figure applies everywhere.

What a VPN privacy audit can—and cannot—tell you

A no-logs statement is a provider’s claim about what it collects or retains. An independent audit can add evidence, but only for the systems, policy language, and time period the auditor examined. It does not establish that a VPN makes a user anonymous, prevents every form of tracking, or protects a device already compromised by malware.

  • Look for the auditor, publication date, systems covered, and whether the report addresses the no-logs policy or a different security question.
  • Do not treat a server-network security audit as a complete check of every privacy promise. TechRadar reports that a January 2026 SecuRing audit found no critical vulnerabilities in a provider’s server network; that kind of result does not by itself verify all logging practices.
  • Read the current privacy policy alongside the audit. Note what account, payment, diagnostic, and connection data the policy says may be processed.
  • Prefer precise claims over labels such as “fully audited.” An audit has boundaries, and those boundaries matter.

How to compare speed results fairly

VPN speed is relative to a baseline connection and a particular route—not an inherent speed that every subscriber will see. A nearby server and a cross-continent route can produce different results; so can a phone and a desktop or one protocol and another. The cited tests illustrate why a percentage slowdown and an absolute Mbps result cannot be combined as though they were measured under the same conditions.

When reviewing a speed claim, check the test date, protocol, route, device or operating system, and whether the figure is an average or a single result. If a provider offers multiple protocols, test the default first and compare alternatives on the network and devices you actually use. A fast result in a reviewer’s lab is a useful signal, not a personal performance guarantee.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

What VPN pricing can—and cannot—be compared here

The available price snapshots are not a harmonized comparison of current checkout totals or renewals across one country. Windscribe’s $3-per-month Build-a-Plan figure and ExpressVPN’s $2.99-per-month two-year Basic figure are tied to RTINGS’ and TechRadar’s respective 2026 reviews. Promotions, billing terms, plan features, region, and renewal prices can differ. Do not assume either monthly equivalent is the price charged each month or the rate that will apply at renewal.

Before paying, confirm the currency and tax, total amount due for the initial term, included features, cancellation and refund terms, and the renewal price and billing frequency. If the renewal rate is not clearly shown, do not infer it from an introductory figure.

Do you need a VPN all the time?

No. Whether a VPN is useful depends on what you do and what risks you are trying to reduce. A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server, which can help on networks you do not control, but it shifts trust to the VPN provider and does not replace secure account practices, software updates, or device protections. RTINGS notes that modern browsers, websites, and devices also offer built-in protections, so a VPN is not essential for every person or every moment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming is not a guaranteed reason to buy one: services can block VPN addresses, and availability changes. If streaming access is central to your choice, check the provider’s current terms and understand that no test or past success guarantees access to a particular catalog later.

Make the final choice by matching evidence to your use

  • Choose NordVPN if you want the strongest broad speed evidence in this shortlist and will verify its current privacy documentation.
  • Choose Proton VPN if speed is a priority and a free tier’s restricted locations and features meet your needs.
  • Choose Mullvad if minimal signup information matters more than streaming reliability, port forwarding, or support beyond WireGuard.
  • Consider Windscribe if configurable location selection and protocol options suit your plan, after checking current pricing and the annual-term condition.
  • Consider ExpressVPN if straightforward setup is a deciding factor, while checking platform-specific performance and the complete current billing terms.

For any of the five, verify the official privacy policy, the precise scope and date of relevant audits, supported devices, and the checkout and renewal terms for your country before committing. The evidence summarized here is independent editorial testing and review, not firsthand testing by this publication.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
