Which T-Mobile settings should you check first?
Start with the least disruptive options. T-Mobile’s guidance recommends automatic network selection and provides device-specific steps for LTE/VoLTE and software updates; the exact controls depend on the phone model and software version.

Use automatic network selection
If your phone offers a network mode setting, choose its automatic option rather than forcing a specific generation such as 5G only. T-Mobile’s slow or no-data troubleshooting refers to selecting 2G/3G/4G/LTE or Auto, but this is troubleshooting guidance—not a blanket claim that a particular mode improves 5G performance. Follow the instructions for your phone in T-Mobile’s internet and data troubleshooting guide.
Enable LTE/VoLTE where available
Check whether your device has an LTE or VoLTE control and enable it if available. T-Mobile says, “Enabling LTE/VoLTE and running the latest software version will help avoid any service interruptions.” Its network guidance links to separate Apple and Android instructions, since labels and steps differ by manufacturer.

Install phone and carrier updates
Install available operating-system updates. On iPhone, also check for carrier settings updates; T-Mobile’s device instructions explain where to find these options. Updates may address service interruptions, but they are not a guarantee of stronger coverage in a particular location.
What to do when T-Mobile data is slow or not working
First note the phone make and model, operating-system version, location, and whether the problem affects calls, data, or both. Check whether it happens in one place or across multiple locations. The cited settings guidance does not establish one setting that can overcome a coverage limitation.

Restore Android APNs to their defaults
If mobile data remains unavailable on Android, restore the Access Point Name (APN) settings to default using your device’s cellular or mobile-network settings. T-Mobile includes this as a troubleshooting step in its data troubleshooting guidance.

Reset network settings only after simpler checks
If automatic network selection, updates, and—on Android—APN restoration have not helped, a network settings reset is a later option. Before doing it, note that T-Mobile warns it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings. You may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and pair Bluetooth devices again. The reset path varies by handset; consult the phone’s device-specific T-Mobile tutorial rather than assuming one menu path applies to all models.

If the specific problem is that mobile data stops working while you are on a call, check whether VoLTE and VoNR are enabled and supported on your device. T-Mobile identifies these settings for calling alongside data. It also notes that a 2G/GPRS/EDGE connection cannot carry calls and data at the same time. Toggle names and availability vary, so use the instructions for your phone in T-Mobile’s troubleshooting guide.

When to contact T-Mobile
If these checks do not resolve the issue, contact T-Mobile or consult your handset maker’s instructions with your phone model, software version, location, and a clear description of whether calls, data, or both are affected. Do not treat a replacement SIM as a general 5G tweak: T-Mobile says to replace a SIM when it contacts the customer that the SIM is incompatible with network enhancements.
