For Steam Frame VR games, start with a comfortable headset fit, SteamVR render resolution set to Auto, and a refresh rate the game can sustain consistently. If performance stutters, lower render resolution in small steps; if the GPU is still overloaded, try a lower supported refresh rate. For comfort, adjust the individual game’s movement and camera options to your tolerance—there is no established universal Steam Frame comfort preset.
Start with a stable baseline
Comfort and performance are closely linked in VR: consistent frame delivery is a better initial goal than choosing the highest refresh-rate number. Valve’s VR Beta guidance says, “A smooth and consistent framerate will be the most comfortable and enjoyable when you play.”

First make sure the headset fits comfortably and the image is clear. Then use SteamVR’s documented baseline: SteamVR Settings > Video > Render Resolution > Auto. Valve gives this advice in its Half-Life: Alyx FAQ; it is general SteamVR guidance, not a Steam Frame-specific test or preset.
Reduce rendering load if the game stutters
- Retest a repeatable scene. Keep the game and scene the same so you can tell whether a change helped.
- Lower render resolution one step at a time. Valve advises reducing resolution further if Auto does not deliver adequate performance. A lower render resolution trades some sharpness for less rendering work.
- Change one setting, then retest. Stop when frame delivery is stable enough for you; there is no verified numeric Steam Frame resolution preset that suits every game or PC.
Choose refresh rate for consistency, not the maximum
Valve lists Steam Frame refresh rates from 72 to 144 Hz and marks 144 Hz as experimental. These are published headset specifications, not a promise that a particular game or streaming setup can sustain every mode. If resolution adjustments do not resolve GPU-limited performance, try a lower refresh rate supported by both the headset and game.

Valve’s general VR Beta guidance uses a consistent 90 Hz baseline, while its suggestion to try 90 Hz when GPU overload causes frame-rate lag is specifically discussed for Valve Index. Treat 90 Hz as contextual guidance, not a Steam Frame default or guaranteed fix.
Set comfort options inside each game
Comfort controls depend on the title. Open that game’s comfort or accessibility menu and compare the movement and camera options it actually offers. Depending on the game, these may include teleport or smooth locomotion, snap turning, vignette, or camera-motion controls. Choose the options that reduce unwanted artificial movement for you; the sources do not establish that Steam Frame provides these controls globally or that one combination works for everyone.

Understand what Steam Frame handles automatically
Steam Frame includes two interior cameras for eye tracking and foveated streaming. Valve describes foveated streaming as directing higher-quality pixels toward where the user is looking. The product page says it “typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth”; that is Valve’s marketing claim, not an independently verified result.

When PC streaming looks unstable
Valve describes Steam Frame as “streaming-first” and lists an included 6 GHz wireless adapter, dual radios, and multi-link streaming as built-in design features. The available product information does not provide a manual bitrate-control recipe, so there is no evidence-based Steam Frame-specific network setting to recommend here.
