Which Spotify Settings Help Reduce Memory and Data Usage?

Reduce Spotify mobile data with Data Saver, lower cellular quality and Wi-Fi-only downloads; reclaim storage by clearing cache or removing offline tracks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use less mobile data, turn on Data Saver, lower cellular streaming quality, and prevent downloads over cellular. To free device storage, clear Spotify’s cache or remove offline downloads; on a compatible Android device, you may be able to store downloads on an external SD card. These controls address different things: data settings affect what Spotify streams or downloads, while cache and downloaded tracks take up local space.

First, choose the problem you want to solve

“Memory” can mean the space used on your phone or computer, rather than the temporary working memory an app uses while it runs. Spotify’s relevant storage controls concern device space: cached media and offline downloads. Mobile data is a separate issue, driven mainly by streaming and downloads over a cellular connection.

That distinction matters when choosing a setting. Clearing cache can reclaim local storage, but it does not lower the audio quality of a stream. Lowering streaming quality can reduce data use while listening, but it does not remove files already saved to your device. If you have both problems, change the relevant settings in both groups.

Which settings affect data and which affect storage?

Setting or action Main effect Tradeoff or limit
Data Saver Reduces app data use by showing fewer images and lowering audio quality. Audio quality is lower; this does not clear existing cache or downloads.
Lower cellular streaming quality Uses less data for streamed audio than a higher quality setting. Sound quality is lower. Spotify’s bitrates describe settings, not guaranteed usage.
Wi-Fi downloads and offline playback Avoids cellular streaming for content already downloaded. Downloads use device storage; Spotify says offline music downloads require Premium.
Clear cache Reclaims space occupied by cached media. Cache supports playback and can build up again as you listen.
Remove downloads Reclaims space used by offline content. Removed content is unavailable offline until downloaded again.
Android external SD storage Moves download storage away from internal device memory. Requires an available, accessible external SD card and a compatible Android device.
Turn off Autoplay Prevents additional playback after the selected content ends. Does not change the quality or size of tracks already downloaded.
Turn off Canvas Disables looping visuals on the Now Playing screen. Spotify says Canvas uses very little data, so this is not a major data-saving measure.

How to reduce Spotify’s mobile data use

1. Turn on Data Saver

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Open Settings and privacy.
  3. Go to Data-saving and offline, then open Data saver.
  4. Turn Data Saver on.

Spotify says Data Saver lowers audio quality and shows fewer images. It is the simplest starting point if you want one change to reduce the app’s data use. It does not remove downloaded music or cache that is already on the device.

2. Lower streaming quality on cellular

Open Settings and privacy and look for Media Quality. On mobile and tablet, Spotify provides separate streaming quality controls for Wi-Fi and cellular where available. Lower the cellular setting if you want to keep higher quality on Wi-Fi but use less data while away from it. Higher streaming quality uses more data.

Spotify lists these approximate music bitrates for its quality settings: Low at 24 kbit/s, Normal at 96 kbit/s, High at 160 kbit/s, and Very high at 320 kbit/s for Premium. It also describes lossless as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. These are Spotify’s setting specifications, not a promise of exact data consumed in an hour or month. Actual usage depends on what you play and the settings in effect; the available settings may also depend on plan and device.

Spotify music setting Spotify-listed bitrate or format What to keep in mind
Low 24 kbit/s Lowest listed bitrate; lower audio quality than higher settings.
Normal 96 kbit/s Higher listed bitrate than Low.
High 160 kbit/s Uses more data for streaming than lower bitrates.
Very high 320 kbit/s, Premium Higher streaming quality uses more data.
Lossless Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC Format and maximum specifications are not a fixed data-per-hour figure.

For a rough illustration only, multiplying the listed bitrates by one hour gives about 10.8 MB at 24 kbit/s, 43.2 MB at 96 kbit/s, 72 MB at 160 kbit/s, and 144 MB at 320 kbit/s using decimal megabytes. These are arithmetic estimates based on the nominal bitrates, not Spotify usage guarantees or measured totals. Network overhead, encoding behavior, and the content and settings actually used can change the amount. There is no fixed monthly saving to expect from choosing one setting.

  • SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

3. Keep downloads on Wi-Fi

If your plan and app offer offline music downloads, download selected music while connected to Wi-Fi, then switch Downloads over cellular off in Settings and privacy under Data-saving and offline, if that control appears. Spotify’s help guidance recommends turning this off to keep downloads on Wi-Fi. Offline playback then avoids streaming those downloaded tracks over cellular, but the downloaded files occupy device storage.

Downloads and streaming are separate quality choices. Spotify says higher download quality uses more space; changing streaming quality does not retroactively change the quality or size of downloads already saved. If you need to reduce data and have room for offline content, Wi-Fi downloads can be useful. If storage is nearly full, prioritize the cellular quality and Data Saver settings instead.

4. Use audio-only options for video podcasts

For video podcasts, open Downloads and streaming and enable Audio-only streaming and/or audio-only downloads if those options appear. This avoids streaming or saving the video component when you only need to hear the episode. The available controls can vary by version and device.

5. Stop playback from continuing automatically

Turn off Autoplay if you want playback to stop after the selected content rather than continuing with related content. Spotify lists this as a way to reduce data use because it can prevent additional streaming. It will not alter audio quality or reduce the space used by existing downloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Canvas can also be disabled on mobile and desktop if you prefer not to see the looping Now Playing visuals. Spotify characterizes Canvas as using very little data and says the visuals do not run in the background, so turning it off is best treated as a display preference rather than a substantial data fix.

How to free Spotify storage

Clear cache on a phone or tablet

  1. Tap your profile picture, then open Settings and privacy.
  2. Go to Data-saving and offline and select Storage.
  3. Tap Clear cache.

Spotify stores parts of music and podcasts as cache to help playback run without lag. Clearing it can free local space, but it removes cached media rather than your saved offline downloads. Spotify can recreate cache as you play content again, so a cache that grows over time is not necessarily a sign that the clearing action failed.

Clear cache on desktop

Open Spotify’s Settings and find the Storage section, then choose Clear cache. Spotify’s desktop control is distinct from removing offline downloads: if the space pressure comes from downloaded content, identify and remove downloads as well.

Remove downloads you no longer need

If clearing cache does not recover enough space, remove offline downloads that you no longer use. Downloaded tracks take device storage, and removing them means they will not be available offline until you download them again. This is often the more effective action when a large library has been saved for offline listening.

Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free device memory for Spotify. This is Spotify’s recommendation, not a measured minimum app requirement. Keeping free space can help avoid running out of room when the app or device needs space for downloads and other activity.

Can Spotify downloads be stored on an SD card?

On Android, Spotify allows the download location to be changed to an available external SD card when the device has one that is accessible. In Spotify, open Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage, then select the card if it is offered. Spotify says the transfer can take a few minutes and the app restarts after it completes; it recommends at least 1 GB free on the SD card.

This option moves download storage; it does not itself reduce cellular data use or clear cache. It is not available simply because a device supports removable storage: the card must be present and accessible, and the control must be offered on that device. An SD card can be relevant when internal storage is scarce, but it is not a fix for a limited mobile-data plan.

On iPhone, Spotify downloads are encrypted on device storage, rather than being redirected to an external card through Spotify’s storage setting. iOS may remove unused stored data to make room for new downloads. If that does not free enough space, Spotify says users may need to remove downloaded tracks themselves.

Choose a settings combination that fits your situation

If cellular data is the main concern

  • Turn on Data Saver.
  • Lower cellular streaming quality while keeping Wi-Fi quality at your preferred level, if separate controls are available.
  • Turn off Downloads over cellular and download content on Wi-Fi when eligible.
  • Use audio-only options for video podcasts when you do not need the video.
  • Disable Autoplay if you do not want Spotify to continue streaming after your selected content.

If device storage is the main concern

  • Clear Spotify cache from the Storage settings.
  • Remove offline downloads you no longer need; clearing cache does not delete them.
  • On a compatible Android device, select an accessible external SD card as the download location if that option is available.
  • On iPhone, allow for the fact that downloads remain encrypted on device storage; remove downloads manually if iOS does not free enough room.

If you need both data savings and more room

Use the cellular data controls first, then inspect local storage separately. Wi-Fi downloads can reduce cellular streaming for the content you have saved, but they add files to device storage. If storage is tight, avoid downloading more than you need offline and clear cache or remove old downloads. There is no single setting that simultaneously removes existing files and reduces every kind of data use.

When a setting seems missing or the result is different than expected

  • The menu path is different: Spotify’s documented mobile path is profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline. App labels and feature availability can vary across app versions, account plans, regions, devices, and operating systems; look for the equivalent data, quality, download, or storage controls in the current app.
  • Data use does not fall as much as expected: Data Saver and lower streaming quality reduce use but do not guarantee a fixed saving. Check whether playback is on cellular, whether the selected quality is for cellular rather than Wi-Fi, and whether downloads are still allowed over cellular.
  • Storage remains full after clearing cache: Cache and downloads are separate. Review offline content and remove downloads that are no longer needed.
  • Cache returns after clearing: Spotify uses cache to help playback; it can accumulate again as media is played. Clearing cache is a space-management step, not a permanent way to prevent cache from being recreated.
  • An SD card is not listed: The Android option depends on an available, accessible external card and device support. If the app does not offer the card as a location, use internal-storage cleanup instead.

Spotify’s help articles document these controls but do not provide a universal per-hour or monthly data-savings figure. Treat bitrate-based calculations as rough illustrations, not a forecast for your account. The best setting is the one that matches your constraint: lower cellular quality for streaming data, Wi-Fi-only downloads for cellular protection, and cache or download management for device storage.
