That last package also contains a new Shadow campaign. Sonic Adventure DX is best called an updated edition or later re-release based on the available official information—not confidently a remake or remaster.
What do port, remaster, and remake mean?
These labels are useful shorthand, not universal industry standards. A publisher’s own description is the best starting point; the changes themselves help explain what the label means.

- Port: a game brought to another platform with limited changes to its underlying content.
- Remaster: the same core game with meaningful technical or presentation updates, such as upgraded visuals, new display options, audio changes, or quality-of-life features.
- Remake: a game substantially rebuilt, with core assets, systems, or design recreated rather than mainly carried forward.
On these definitions, the examples below do not support calling any of the listed releases a remake. SEGA explicitly uses “remaster” for Sonic Origins and its corporate materials classify Sonic Colors: Ultimate as a remaster. For Sonic Adventure DX, the documented details are not enough to make a stricter technical classification.

Which Sonic releases are remasters?
Sonic Origins: four remastered classics
SEGA describes Sonic Origins as a digital remaster that brings together Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. It released on June 23, 2022, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, according to SEGA’s game page.
#1 Best Overall
- A new Spin on a Classic: You've never played classic Sonic like this before!
- Multiply, swim up waterfalls, change form, and more with the powers of the Chaos Emeralds.
- lay as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, using their unique abilities to explore and uncover new paths and secrets.
- More Friends, More Fun: Play with up to 3 other players in local Co-op and challenge players from around the world in Battle Mode!
The collection offers two presentation choices: Anniversary Mode uses an updated widescreen format, while Classic Mode keeps the original 4:3 form. It also adds collection features including modes, saved data, and unlockable museum content. These changes make it more than a bare platform conversion, but they do not establish that the four games were wholly rebuilt.
Sonic Origins Plus: an expanded edition
Sonic Origins Plus adds 12 Game Gear games, makes Amy playable in the included games, and adds Knuckles to Sonic CD. Those additions expand the remastered collection; they do not change the basic classification of its four main games.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate revisits the 2010 Wii game. In its September 9, 2021 release announcement, SEGA described enhanced high-resolution characters and stages, remixed stage and boss music, and a rerecorded opening theme. It also listed additions including Tails Save, Jade Ghost Wisp, Rival Rush, and customization items. SEGA Sammy’s investor presentation independently corroborates the publisher group’s label by categorizing the game as a remaster.

Sonic Generations in SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS
SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS contains a complete remaster of SONIC GENERATIONS, described by SEGA as a collection of 2D and 3D stages with upgraded visuals and bonus content. The same package includes SHADOW GENERATIONS, a brand-new campaign starring Shadow. So the package is not simply a port, and it is not accurate to describe the entire release as a remake of the original game: it combines a remastered game with new content. SEGA announced the details and the October 25, 2024 release date in its launch announcement.
What about Sonic Adventure DX?
Sonic Adventure DX is an updated edition and later platform re-release of Sonic Adventure. SEGA’s Japanese game page notes that a Japan-specific Steam release began on January 23, 2024. The page does not provide enough detail about the changes from the original to establish whether they meet a strict remaster definition. Calling it an enhanced edition or later re-release is therefore more precise than confidently labeling it a remake or port.
