There is no defensible five-brand ranking by total smartwatch support years in the published policies compared here. The clearest comparable commitments are Google’s minimum three years of Pixel Watch updates, Samsung’s offer of up to four years of OS upgrades for eligible Galaxy Watches, and Zepp Health’s typical minimum two years of security updates for Amazfit and Zepp devices. Those periods cover different kinds of updates, so they are not a like-for-like ranking.
What smartwatch software support means
“Updates” can mean major operating-system upgrades, new features, bug fixes, or security patches. A longer security-update term does not necessarily mean more OS upgrades, and a feature-update programme without a stated duration cannot be compared numerically with a fixed commitment.

The clock matters, too: Google counts from a watch’s first availability on the US Google Store, while Zepp Health describes its typical security period from a model’s first shipment. Eligibility can also depend on the exact model, launch cohort, or market.

Documented smartwatch update commitments
| Brand | Published commitment or evidence | What it covers and its limits |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | Up to four years of One UI Watch and Wear OS upgrades for eligible Galaxy Watches. | Samsung announced this policy in 2022; “up to” is not a guarantee of four years for every model. Samsung separately announced up to five years of security updates for select named Galaxy Watch models. That is a different commitment from OS upgrades. Samsung’s OS-upgrade announcement; Samsung Mobile Security scope. |
| At least three years of Pixel Watch updates. | Google says the period begins when a device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Its policy includes security enhancements, features, OS updates, and bug fixes. Google Pixel Watch update policy. | |
| Zepp Health (Amazfit and Zepp) | Typically at least two years of security updates after first shipment; some models may receive three years or longer. | This is a security-update policy, not a stated term for major OS upgrades. Check the model’s end-of-life status. Zepp Health Product Support Policy Overview. |
| Huawei | Huawei lists smartwatch models in monthly and quarterly security-patch programmes. | The cited bulletin does not establish a single total support duration across the listed watches. Patch cadence is not the same as a total support term. Huawei security bulletins. |
| Garmin | Garmin describes feature updates for smartwatches and bike computers. | The cited official page does not promise a fixed support duration in years, so it cannot support a duration-based ranking. Garmin update programme information. |
| Apple | Apple documents secure boot and secure software updates for watchOS. | The cited security guide does not state a fixed-duration Apple Watch support commitment. Past compatibility history is not a forward-looking guarantee. Apple Platform Security. |
Which smartwatch gets the longest software support?
Among these published commitments, Samsung states the longest potential OS-upgrade period: up to four years for eligible Galaxy Watches. Google provides a clearer minimum-duration statement—at least three years of updates for Pixel Watch, including OS and other updates under its policy. These statements are not directly interchangeable: Samsung’s is an “up to” OS-upgrade commitment, while Google’s is a minimum update policy with a defined US availability start point.

Zepp Health’s typical minimum of two years applies to security updates, not a stated number of major OS upgrades. Huawei, Garmin, and Apple provide evidence of update activity or update mechanisms in the cited material, but not a comparable fixed duration. As a result, a ranking of five brands by total support years would overstate what the manufacturers’ published terms establish.

How to check support for a specific watch
- Identify the exact model and generation. A brand-level policy does not establish eligibility for every watch.
- Find the manufacturer’s current model-level policy or list. Samsung uses eligible-device language, Zepp Health maintains model end-of-life information, and Huawei’s bulletin names devices covered by patch programmes.
- Check what kind of update the period covers. Confirm whether the commitment means OS upgrades, features, bug fixes, security patches, or a combination.
- Check when the support clock starts and where the policy applies. Google specifies first US Google Store availability; Zepp Health refers to first shipment. Samsung notes that security-update scope can vary by device and market.
- Recheck the terms before buying. Policies and eligible-model lists can change; do not infer a guaranteed term from another model in the same brand’s lineup.
