To reduce smart-bulb power use, schedule lights to turn off when they are not needed and dim them to the lowest comfortable level for the task. For reliability, use a bulb’s supported connection and control setup, and make sure that control path remains available. There is no universally best brightness percentage or wireless protocol: results depend on the bulb, home, and household routine.
Which settings can reduce power use?
Schedule lights to turn off when they are not needed
Set off times around predictable periods when a room is empty or its light is not needed. A schedule can reduce the time a bulb is on; it will not save energy if it simply shifts the same amount of lighting to another time. The U.S. Department of Energy identifies schedules as one factor that affects smart-lighting energy use, while noting that actual savings depend on the device and how people use it. Dim to suit the activity
Use the lowest brightness that still provides comfortable, useful light for the task. A lower output can reduce use, but no fixed setting—such as 50%—is established as optimal for every bulb or room. The cited sources do not quantify household savings at a particular dimming level. The Tapo L550, for example, offers a stated dimming range of 1%–100%; that is the model’s control range, not a recommended everyday setting. TP-Link Tapo L550 specifications
Do not assume a comparison figure predicts your bill
TP-Link lists the TL135E at 9.5 W maximum power and 0.2 W standby power. Its claim of “up to 87%” lower energy use compares that model with a 75 W incandescent lamp. This is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent test or a guarantee of household savings; actual use also depends on operating time, settings, and the particular bulb. Which setup choices help keep a bulb reliable?
Use a supported connection and control path
Check the exact bulb model’s stated connection type, compatible apps and platforms, and whether it needs a bridge. A smart bulb depends on both the device and the path used to control it, so a mismatch or unavailable control component can interfere with smart functions. Philips Hue describes one arrangement: a Hue Bridge connects to the router and communicates with Hue bulbs over Zigbee. That is an example of a product ecosystem, not evidence that Zigbee is more reliable than Wi-Fi in every home. Philips Hue: How do smart bulbs work?
Check model-specific compatibility before changing settings or replacing a bulb
Features differ even among bulbs from the same manufacturer. TP-Link describes the TL135E as a Matter-capable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi bulb; its L550 is listed as Matter-compatible and dimmable. Those specifications do not establish support for every smart-home platform or setup. Confirm the exact model’s instructions and compatibility before relying on a particular app, platform, or connection. TL135E details · L550 details

For a replacement, also check the bulb’s socket, voltage, light output in lumens, color or white-temperature features, dimming support, and maximum and standby power. These are model-specific; a dimming control or connectivity feature on one bulb should not be assumed to exist on another.
How should you choose settings for your home?
- Identify when the light is genuinely needed. Use those routine periods to set an automatic off time, leaving flexibility for times when the room is occupied outside the usual schedule.
- Set brightness by task. Start with comfortable, useful illumination, then reduce brightness if the task still feels adequately lit. Do not treat a manufacturer’s dimming range as an energy-saving target.
- Verify the control arrangement. Check the exact model’s connection, supported platform, and any bridge requirement in its product information and setup instructions.
- Compare specifications that affect your decision. Look at light output, dimming and color options, maximum and standby power, and available controls such as scheduling or energy monitoring. These details can help identify a suitable bulb, but the cited examples do not establish an overall winner.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The Department of Energy says LED reliability should be considered when selecting a product, but its LED guidance is general and is not a smart-bulb field test. Its materials and the product information cited here do not establish a universal router channel, minimum brightness, firmware schedule, signal-strength target, or best wireless protocol. Nor do they establish a single household savings rate for schedules or dimming. For model setup, follow the bulb maker’s specific instructions rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all network setting. U.S. Department of Energy: LED Basics
