What’s actually slowing this PC down?

When you switch filament, start by selecting a profile for the new material, then check nozzle temperature, bed temperature and part cooling. Confirm that the profile suits your printer and build surface. Adjust retraction only if problems such as stringing persist; there is no single retraction value that works for every printer and filament.
Do you need to change slicer settings when changing filament?
Usually, yes. Filaments can need different temperatures and cooling behavior, so carrying over the previous material’s settings without checking them can lead to poor adhesion, warping, stringing or weak layers. Start with a filament-specific preset, then verify its settings against the filament maker’s guidance and your printer’s capabilities.

PrusaSlicer keeps filament settings in a separate category; see its filament settings documentation. Manufacturer guidance may also organize recommendations by filament product: Bambu Lab’s Filament Guide, for example, includes temperature and drying information. Preset values can be printer- and product-specific, so do not treat a material name alone as proof that a profile is suitable.

Filament profile
Choose a preset for the new material and, when available, the specific filament product. Check that it is intended for your printer and nozzle setup before printing. Treat the preset as a starting point rather than a guarantee that every spool sold under that material name will behave identically.

- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
Nozzle temperature
Check the first-layer temperature separately from the temperature for later layers, and use the spool or profile maker’s recommendation. For its PETG guidance, Prusa lists 230 °C for the first layer and 240 °C for subsequent layers. Those are recommendations for Prusa’s documented setup, not universal PETG settings. See the Prusa PETG guide.
Bed temperature
Check the bed temperature for both the filament and the build surface. Prusa’s PETG guide lists 85 °C for the first layer and 90 °C for later layers in its context. Do not apply those figures automatically to another printer, sheet or PETG product.

Part cooling
Cooling can help preserve detail and print bridges, but more fan is not always better: for some materials it can contribute to warping or layer separation. Prusa’s cooling guidance says always-on fan behavior is typical for most materials, with exceptions including ABS, ASA, PC and some flexible filaments. Follow the material-specific profile rather than applying one fan rule to every spool.

Revisit retraction if the new filament produces persistent stringing or oozing. Prusa notes that PETG stringing can be moderated with higher retractions and a lower nozzle temperature, but that direction is not a universal distance or formula. Change settings cautiously and use guidance for your printer and filament.

Build surface and printer capability
Confirm that your printer can reach the temperatures required by the profile and that the build surface is compatible with the material. A setting can be correct for the filament yet unsuitable for a particular plate—or outside the printer’s capabilities.
What PETG shows about material-specific settings
PETG is a useful example of why switching materials involves more than changing one temperature. Prusa describes it as suitable for many mechanical parts, with strong layer adhesion and low warping, but also a tendency to string. Its cited guide recommends a powder-coated TXT or satin sheet and warns that PETG can bond too strongly to smooth PEI, potentially damaging the surface.

- 【SUNLU PLA PLUS 3D Filament Advantages】- PLA PLUS filament is 10 times stronger than PLA Filament, the color is brighter, it has many advantages, Clog/Bubble/Tangle/Warping/Stringing free, easy to Use, better layer adhesion.
- 【1.75mm Diameter】- Dimensional Accuracy +/- 0.02mm. SUNLU filament has wide compatibility due to the small diameter error, it's suitable for almost all 1.75mm FDM 3D printers.
- 【Spool Diameter】- Spool Diameter: 8.00", Spool Width: 2.50", Spool Hub Hole Diameter: 2.20". The size of the SUNLU filament spool is suitable for hanging on many 3D printers.
Cooling also involves a tradeoff. Prusa’s PETG guidance suggests leaving the fan off for the first few layers and then running it at around half power; printing with the fan off can favor toughness. More cooling may help detail and reduce stringing or oozing, while higher filament temperature can improve layer merging and mechanical resistance. These are material- and profile-specific recommendations, not a recipe for every PETG printer.

A practical order for switching filament
- Select the profile: Choose a filament preset suited to the material, product and printer.
- Verify temperatures: Check nozzle and bed values, including any difference between first-layer and later-layer settings, against the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Review cooling: Confirm the fan behavior recommended for the material and the features of the print.
- Check compatibility: Make sure the printer and build surface are suitable for the material and temperatures.
- Troubleshoot after the initial setup: If stringing or oozing remains, consider cautious retraction or temperature adjustments using printer- and filament-specific guidance.
Why one material’s settings do not transfer directly to another
A temperature number alone cannot tell you which filament is easier or better to print. Different materials and products can call for different nozzle and bed temperatures, cooling, retraction behavior and build surfaces; they may also differ in warping and layer adhesion. The cited manufacturer guides do not establish one cross-brand settings table that applies safely to every printer and filament variant. Use the relevant product guidance and printer profile rather than ranking materials by a single figure.
