AAAD lists Fermata Auto, Screen2Auto, and CarStream as third-party apps for Android Auto, but its list is not a promise that any of them will work on your phone or car. Treat them as options to investigate—not guaranteed recommendations—and use any screen-based or video activity only while parked.
Which sideloaded apps does AAAD list?
AAAD’s project documentation names three apps: Fermata Auto, Screen2Auto, and CarStream. The documentation establishes that these names appear in AAAD’s list; it does not independently confirm their current features, maintenance status, or compatibility.

AAAD says it does not support the listed apps themselves and provides them “as is.” It also warns that it cannot guarantee they will work and that Android Auto changes can break the installation method. In other words, “listed by AAAD” is not the same as “currently working,” officially supported, or approved for every vehicle.

No screen-mirroring or video use should be treated as appropriate while driving. Google says, “To help keep drivers and passengers safe, users have additional restrictions on how they can interact with apps while driving.” Android Auto is designed around driver-optimized experiences, not unrestricted phone-screen use.

Google’s Android Auto overview says supported parked-app activities on Android 15 and higher automatically exit when vehicle motion is detected. That behavior is not a reason to test or bypass restrictions: only interact with parked-only activities when the vehicle is safely parked. Why does sideloading not guarantee Android Auto support?
Installing an Android app on a phone and making it available in Android Auto are different things. Google’s compatible-app guidance directs users to apps built for Android Auto, including supported categories such as music, messaging, and news. To view all compatible apps in the Play Store listing, Google says users must be signed into a Google Account and have personalization enabled. Google documents a developer-mode “unknown sources” option, but its scope is limited: it applies to media, messaging notifications, and parked apps, not apps built using the Android for Cars App Library. It is a testing pathway, not a blanket permission that turns any phone app into an Android Auto app. Google also says apps used in real vehicles generally need to be installed from a trusted source. What should you check before trying AAAD?
- Check your Android version: AAAD says compatibility is uncertain for its 2.x versions on Android 14 and newer, and flags versions below 2.0 as incompatible. This is AAAD’s project guidance, not a Google compatibility guarantee.
- Verify the download source: AAAD identifies its GitHub repository as its only official download source and says third-party download sites are unaffiliated. Use the AAAD GitHub repository to verify releases rather than relying on an unofficial mirror.
- Check current release notes and device reports: Android Auto, Android, and app behavior can change. Confirm that reports match your phone, car, Android version, and Android Auto build; another person’s successful install does not establish compatibility for yours.
- Keep expectations limited: AAAD says it does not support the apps in its list. Do not treat an installer warning or an app appearing in the list as proof that the app is maintained or safe for your particular setup.
AAAD suggests considering an AAWireless USB dongle for Android 14-and-newer app availability problems. That is the project’s suggestion, not a Google guarantee; the adapter is not required and is not established as a fix for every failure.
