Start with ANC or Transparency for your surroundings, then pick one sound-customization option in the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app: Sound Personalization or the graphical EQ. If you use full Transparency, decide whether playback should pause or mix with ambient sound. There is no single best preset for every listener.
1. Open the right app
Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 5 Wireless product information identifies Smart Control Plus as the app for the headphones. The official product manual says the app is needed to make full use of the headphones’ settings and functions. Use it as the starting point for the adjustments below.

2. Match ANC and Transparency to where you are
Use ANC when you want to reduce background noise; switch to Transparency when you need to hear surrounding sounds or speak with someone. Smart Control Plus includes ANC settings and an ANC/Transparency intensity slider. The manual also describes switching modes with a double tap on the touchpad and adjusting their balance with a pinch gesture.

It is a sensible first setting to try, but you can adjust it if you prefer another behavior. For wind or movement noise, Wind Noise Reduction has Off, Auto, and Max options; Auto is the default. Compare the options in the conditions where the noise bothers you.

3. Choose one way to customize sound
Pick either guided Sound Personalization or the graphical equalizer. Sennheiser describes the MOMENTUM 5’s EQ as 8-band, and says EQ and Sound Personalization cannot be active at the same time.
Try Sound Personalization for guided choices
Choose this route if you would rather follow a guided process than adjust frequency bands yourself. The resulting preference is personal; official documentation does not establish one universally best profile.

Use the graphical EQ for direct control
Choose the EQ if you want to adjust frequencies yourself. Make changes gradually and listen to familiar material; there is no manufacturer-supported universal curve to apply for every listener or genre.

4. Decide what happens at full Transparency
In Smart Control Plus, “Pause on full transparency” controls whether playback is muted at maximum Transparency or continues mixed with ambient sound. Pausing is the documented default. Change it if you want audio to keep playing while outside sound is audible.

5. Check codec compatibility before pursuing audio quality
Sennheiser lists aptX Lossless support, but the source device must support a compatible codec for that audio path to apply. A setting change alone cannot guarantee an improvement across all phones, computers, or other sources. Sennheiser’s product information also mentions the BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter as an option for enabling aptX with a source that does not support it; it is not required for the main adjustments in this guide.

Sennheiser advertises up to 57 hours of Bluetooth music playback with ANC under its stated iPhone, medium-volume test condition. Treat that as a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for different volume levels, codecs, or usage patterns. (Sennheiser product page)
