Which Self-Hosted VPN Should You Choose: WireGuard, OpenVPN, or Tailscale?

WireGuard puts peer and route management in your hands; OpenVPN offers a server/client model with UDP and TCP options; Tailscale adds managed coordination to WireGuard encryption.

For a self-hosted VPN, choose WireGuard if you want to manage peer keys and routing directly, OpenVPN if you need its server/client model or UDP and TCP transport options, and Tailscale if you want coordinated multi-device connections and accept a managed control plane. These are different kinds of choices: WireGuard is a protocol, OpenVPN is VPN software, and Tailscale is a managed mesh service built around WireGuard encryption.

How the three options differ

Option What you operate Connectivity and routing Best fit
WireGuard A VPN protocol. You configure peers, keys, allowed IP ranges, and system networking. Peers exchange encrypted UDP packets. Reachability and routing must be arranged for your network. Operators who want direct control and can manage peer configuration and routes.
OpenVPN VPN software in a server/client deployment, including the server and network configuration. Supports UDP and TCP modes; firewall and network setup affect connectivity. People who need OpenVPN’s deployment model or transport choices and can maintain the service.
Tailscale A managed coordination plane plus WireGuard-based encrypted traffic. Tailscale manages keys and helps peers connect. Attempts direct peer connections and uses relays when direct connectivity is unavailable. People who want coordinated multi-device connectivity and accept an external control plane.

WireGuard’s cryptokey-routing model maps peer public keys to allowed IP addresses. Those addresses guide outgoing traffic and serve as an access-control check for incoming traffic. It is not, by itself, a complete managed mesh product: the operator still supplies peer configuration and network routing.

OpenVPN documentation describes UDP and TCP transport modes. Its protocol also uses TLS-encrypted control packets and a reliability layer. The additional choices are useful when they fit a deployment, but they do not remove the need to operate the server and configure the network.

Tailscale uses WireGuard for end-to-end encryption, while its coordination service handles key management and helps establish connections. If direct connections are unavailable, Tailscale can use relays; the company says relays do not decrypt the WireGuard tunnels. With the standard service, the data plane is encrypted, but the control plane is still a managed-service dependency.

What “self-hosted” means in this comparison

Running a VPN endpoint on your own hardware is not the same as controlling every part of its operation. With WireGuard or a self-hosted OpenVPN deployment, you manage the relevant server or peer setup. With standard Tailscale, devices may connect to your own machines, but Tailscale operates the coordination plane. If you want to self-host that part of a Tailscale-compatible setup, investigate Headscale separately.

  • Control: Decide who will handle keys, identity, access policy, software updates, and troubleshooting.
  • Traffic scope: Determine whether you need access to selected devices, a private subnet, or general internet traffic routed through a remote device.
  • Network reachability: Consider whether your endpoints can accept inbound connections or whether coordination and relaying may be needed.
  • Device support: If a printer, camera, or other device cannot run a VPN client, you may need a device on its network to route traffic for it.

Choose the setup that matches your network

WireGuard: direct peer and route management

WireGuard securely encapsulates IP packets over UDP, as the WireGuard project overview explains. A working deployment requires more than installing the protocol: plan peer keys, allowed address ranges, endpoint reachability, operating-system routes, and firewall rules. This model suits an operator who wants to manage those details rather than hand them to a coordination service.

Do not choose WireGuard solely on a claim that it is always the fastest. The official materials establish how it works, not a universal speed ranking against OpenVPN and Tailscale on every combination of hardware, network path, relay use, and configuration.

OpenVPN: a server/client deployment with transport choices

OpenVPN’s UDP and TCP modes give an operator transport options, and its protocol documentation describes TLS control packets and acknowledgment/retransmission behavior. Those features may matter for a particular network or existing deployment; they do not establish that one mode will be faster or more reliable in every environment.

For Access Server in Docker, OpenVPN lists requirements including Docker Engine, a public IP address or domain, network-administration capabilities, device-node creation, and access to /dev/net/tun. Check the current Access Server Docker requirements before deploying. OpenVPN also notes that virtual cloud providers share hardware and may limit CPU or network performance, so a VPS should be selected with its actual resource and networking constraints in mind.

Tailscale: coordinated devices, with a managed control plane

Tailscale’s coordination service facilitates connections between devices, trying direct connections and using relays when needed. Its connection-type documentation explains that relays carry encrypted WireGuard traffic without decrypting it. This can simplify multi-device connectivity, but using the standard service means relying on Tailscale’s control plane for coordination and key management.

Subnet routers and exit nodes solve different problems

Use a subnet router to reach private-network devices

A subnet router advertises selected routes so tailnet devices can access a private LAN or cloud subnet. It is useful when some endpoints cannot run a client, or when you need access to a group of devices behind one network connection. Tailscale says installing its client directly on each device offers the best security and performance where feasible, because traffic can remain end-to-end encrypted between those devices.

For subnet routing, advertise the route, have an administrator approve it, and configure access rules. Route approval and permission to use a route are separate controls: advertising or approving a route does not by itself decide which users or devices should be allowed to reach it. See Tailscale’s subnet-router guide for current configuration details.

Use an exit node to route general internet traffic

An exit node routes a client’s non-Tailscale internet traffic through a selected device. The node must advertise the exit-node role, an administrator must approve it, and the client must opt in. By default, the client may lose access to its local network while using an exit node unless local-network access is enabled. The exit-node guide describes the setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routing traffic through an exit node does not make it anonymous or remove trust in the exit operator. It changes where traffic exits; the exit device and its network remain part of the path.

When Headscale is worth considering

Headscale describes itself as an open-source, self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale control server, aimed at personal use and small organizations. It is a separate project, not a first-party Tailscale product. Consider it if operating the coordination plane yourself is important enough to justify running another service. Check its current compatibility and feature support against the clients and functions you need before committing.

A practical decision checklist

  • Pick WireGuard if you want direct control over peer configuration and routes, and are prepared to manage keys, reachability, and operating-system networking.
  • Pick OpenVPN if you specifically need its server/client deployment model or UDP/TCP transport choices, and can maintain the server and its network requirements.
  • Pick Tailscale if coordinated multi-device connectivity matters more than operating the control plane yourself, and you accept the managed service while using WireGuard-based encrypted tunnels.
  • Evaluate Headscale if you want to self-host the coordination layer and are willing to operate it and verify that its current feature set fits your setup.

Will one option be faster?

There is no supported universal winner. The official materials for these products explain their architectures and requirements but do not establish a controlled, same-hardware performance ranking across all three. Real-world throughput and connection quality depend on the endpoint hardware, network path, configuration, and whether traffic is direct or relayed. Treat broad speed rankings as claims that require comparable testing details, not as a safe basis for choosing your deployment.
