But there is no confirmed national list of affected schools in the reports available as of October 2. Check your child’s school directly for its arrangements; a national expectation does not confirm whether an individual school will close.
What is planned for October 14?
Fórsa’s education FAQ says members of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) and the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland (ASTI) were scheduled to strike on Wednesday, October 14, with another strike day planned for October 21. The same FAQ described the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) ballot as due to close shortly, so its participation should not be treated as settled on that information alone.
Fórsa also describes the dates as part of coordinated public-service strike action. The union says the Public Service Agreement 2024–2026 expired in June and exploratory talks did not produce an agreement. Fórsa attributes the dispute to the lack of a credible approach to pay and cost-of-living pressures; that is the union’s account of the dispute.
How likely are schools to close?
An Irish Times report published September 29 said almost all schools were expected to close if the industrial action continued. JOE.ie reported on October 2 that parents had received warning notices through the Aladdin school messaging system. These reports point to potentially widespread disruption, but neither establishes which schools will close, and a warning is not the same as a final school-level confirmation.

Fórsa reported that 96.6% of members who voted supported industrial action, with a turnout of 72.6%. Separately, the Irish Times reported that more than 100,000 public-sector workers were due to begin industrial action. That figure concerns the wider public-service action; it is not a count of teachers, schools or closures.
How to check whether your child’s school is closing
- Check messages from the school. Look in the school’s usual messaging system, including Aladdin if your school uses it, and check email, texts or other official channels it normally uses.
- Look for a direct update from the school. A national report that most schools are expected to close cannot settle your child’s school arrangements.
- Check again closer to the date. Strike plans and local arrangements can change. Use the school’s latest notice if it updates an earlier message.
The available reporting does not enumerate every school that sent a warning. If you have not received a notice, that alone does not establish whether the school will open; seek confirmation through its official contact channels.

What is not yet confirmed
- There is no comprehensive school-by-school closure list in the reports cited above.
- Widespread closures are an expectation conditional on the strike proceeding, not a guarantee that every school will close.
- Fórsa’s education FAQ described the TUI ballot as pending. Its civil-service FAQ, last updated October 2, said a separate strike FAQ was to be issued before October 14.
Because strike information can change, check current school and union notices rather than relying on an earlier report alone.
