The Sinking City 2 is a survival-horror game first and a detective game second. Frogwares shifts the series away from the original’s open-world investigations toward focused exploration, resource management and combat in flooded 1920s Arkham. Investigation remains available, but it is optional rather than a gate to the main story.
What kind of game is The Sinking City 2?
Frogwares describes The Sinking City 2 as a third-person, single-player survival-horror game. It takes place in a supernatural version of 1920s Arkham, where a flood has overtaken the city and eldritch creatures threaten its remaining inhabitants. The story follows Calvin as he tries to rescue Faye after a ritual goes wrong. The developer says the story stands alone, so knowledge of the first game is not required.
The sequel’s central change is structural. Rather than sending players through an open-world detective adventure, it uses carefully built locations and layered routes to shape exploration and pacing. The result is intended to feel closer to focused survival horror than to a conventional investigation-led adventure.
How investigation works
Detective work has not disappeared, but it no longer drives every step of progression. Frogwares says optional cases can reveal information about Arkham and reward players with resources, shortcuts, weapons or upgrades, and talents. Skipping them does not stop the main story from moving forward.

That makes investigation a side path for players who want to dig into the setting or strengthen Calvin, rather than a mandatory puzzle chain. It is a notable change for returning fans: the sequel retains detective elements, but survival and exploration take priority.
Exploration, combat and survival
The official gameplay descriptions emphasize limited resources, inventory management, puzzles, and routes that open as players find shortcuts. Safe refuges offer a contrast to dangerous streets and interiors. Named locations include Akeley Memorial Hospital, the Fish Market and Redemption Church, alongside Arkham’s flooded streets.

Combat includes firearms as well as dodging, punching and stomping. Frogwares also describes weapon upgrades and talents that can complement one another. The enemies range from Slither Worms and Abominations to larger threats such as the Stygian Harvester and Acheronian Juggernaut. Together, these systems frame combat as part of a resource-conscious survival loop, not just a reason to clear every room.
What the review evidence says
PC Gamer reviewer Jody Macgregor scored the game 70/100 in a review published August 17, 2026. Macgregor praised the move to more focused survival-horror spaces and described combat as improved, particularly its dodge-and-melee rhythm. The review’s overall verdict was that the sequel improves on the original but feels incremental.

The same review criticized inventory friction and crafting that felt like filler. It also objected to the lack of return visits to earlier flooded streets or skipped side content, and said the ending felt rushed. Macgregor estimated a completion could take under 15 hours; that is one reviewer’s estimate, not a guaranteed playtime.
Those points suggest a sequel with a clearer horror focus and more satisfying combat, but not one without structural trade-offs. The 70/100 score is a single critic’s assessment, not a consensus rating. Steam’s player-review figures are live aggregates that can change; consult the Steam listing for its current figures.

Release date and platforms
The Sinking City 2 launched August 18, 2026. Official listings and launch coverage establish availability on PC through Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Xbox also lists cloud gaming. The storefronts show standard and premium-tier options, but prices and discounts vary by region and date, so check the relevant store for current edition details.
Steam lists the game as single-player and includes achievements, trading cards, Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. It also lists downloadable add-ons: Arkham Field Kit, The Holloway Manor, Chthonic Arsenal and Original Soundtrack. Xbox lists the Field Kit, Holloway Manor and Chthonic Arsenal. These listings establish digital add-ons, not physical editions or merchandise.

Should you play it?
It is a better fit for players looking for focused survival horror, combat and environmental exploration than for anyone expecting the first game’s open-world detective structure to remain in the foreground. Fans of investigations can still pursue optional cases for useful rewards and deeper context, while newcomers can start here without playing the original.
Frogwares’ design descriptions explain the intended shift; the clearest independent criticism in the available review comes from PC Gamer’s assessment of inventory, crafting, revisiting locations and the ending. That makes the game’s appeal fairly specific: a stronger horror-and-combat emphasis, with detective work retained as an optional layer rather than the main event.
