Start with five areas: filter watch notifications, set up the buttons and shortcuts you use most, arrange useful tiles, choose how the display wakes, and review Safety and Emergency options. These are practical starting points—not universal best settings—because the right choices depend on your habits, paired phone, region, and installed software.
1. Filter notifications before they interrupt you
In the Galaxy Wearable app on your phone, open Watch settings > Notifications > App notifications and turn off alerts from apps that rarely need your attention. The menu wording may change with software updates; Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 Classic manual and support page is a useful reference if the labels on your device differ.

Also decide whether watch notifications should appear while you are using your phone. Allowing them can duplicate alerts across devices; limiting them while the phone is in use can make the watch more useful when your phone is idle. Choose based on where you want an interruption, and revisit the list if you find yourself missing something important.

Set a shortcut for an app or action you reach for repeatedly, and choose a function for the Watch 8 Classic’s configurable Quick button that suits your routine. The cited settings guide describes button and gesture options, but the choices available on your watch depend on its software and configuration. Keep a convenient back-navigation action if you rely on it; a shortcut is useful only if it does not make familiar movement through the interface harder.

3. Put useful information within reach
Customize the tiles so the information and functions you check most often are easy to reach from the watch face. Favor a focused set over a long list: the point is to reduce the steps to something useful, not to surface every available option. Tile availability depends on supported apps and features installed on your watch.
4. Choose how the display behaves
These display settings do different jobs, so adjust them independently rather than treating them as one battery switch:

- Always-on Display: Keeps the watch face visible for easier glances. Turning it off is a reasonable battery-saving trial, but the resulting runtime depends on your use; no model-specific battery measurement is established here.
- Raise wrist to wake: Lets you wake the screen with a wrist movement. Keep it on if you often check the watch this way; turn it off if unintended screen wake-ups bother you.
- Screen timeout: Controls how long the display stays active after waking. A shorter interval can reduce how long the screen remains lit, while a longer one gives you more time to read or interact.
- Show last app: Controls how long the last-used app remains available when you return to the watch. Adjust it to balance quick continuation against returning to the watch face sooner.
If battery life is your priority, try switching off Always-on Display first and observe your own results over normal use. There is no controlled comparison here that supports a promised runtime or a specific battery gain.

Open the Safety and Emergency settings on the watch and review the options actually shown on your device. Add medical information if appropriate, and check emergency alert and fall detection settings if they are available. Feature availability, setup requirements, and how emergency features behave can vary by market, configuration, and paired phone, so do not assume every option works identically everywhere.

When a setting is missing or named differently
