If your Samsung camera preview looks darker than expected, try Camera Assistant’s Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO controls. Setting both to None can produce a brighter preview, according to Samsung—but it is a symptom-specific adjustment, not a guaranteed upgrade to every photo.
What the setting does—and when to change it
Samsung describes these Camera Assistant controls as a way to reduce blur and noise by limiting shutter speed and ISO. Turning the limits off removes that constraint, which may help when the preview looks too dark and you want it brighter. It does not guarantee sharper or better-looking final images in every lighting or movement condition.

On a supported phone, open Camera app > Quick controls (the four-squares icon) > Settings > Camera Assistant > Advanced Photo mode controls. Set Minimum shutter speed and Maximum ISO to None. Menu names and availability can vary by model, software version and region. Samsung says Camera Assistant is available only in countries that support Good Lock. Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guidance documents this change for a dark preview.

Samsung describes Night and Pro mode in its camera modes guidance. These are alternatives for different needs, not settings that should be enabled for every shot.

Check the scene before changing camera settings
A dark or soft-looking photo may have a simpler cause than a camera setting. Samsung recommends checking the amount and direction of light, movement by you or the subject, and shooting distance. It also notes: “A dirty or smudged lens can ruin an otherwise perfectly composed photo.” Clean the lens with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. A camera protector or lens cover can also cause focus problems or distort light.
For a close subject, Samsung says Focus enhancer may switch to the ultra-wide camera to reduce blur. On Ultra models, the telephoto camera is designed for distant subjects, so a nearby subject may be out of focus when using high zoom. Try stepping back or using a suitable camera view instead of treating every focus problem as a brightness issue.

Expect model-specific Camera Assistant options
Camera Assistant features are not identical across Galaxy phones. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra guide, last updated January 26, 2024, describes options including Auto HDR, Picture softening, Auto lens switching, Adaptive Pixel, Quick tap shutter and Prioritise Focus Over Speed. Samsung says the latter waits for focus before triggering the shutter, which can delay capture. Do not assume these controls are available on another Galaxy model.
