For better home Wi-Fi security, change the router’s default administrator password, install current firmware, and set wireless encryption to WPA2 or WPA3. Then turn off remote management and network services you do not need, and choose a Wi-Fi name that does not reveal your location or router model. Router menus vary, and ISP-provided equipment may limit what you can change, so check the manual or ask your provider if a setting is unclear.
1. Change the router administrator password
The administrator password controls the router’s settings; it is different from the password people use to join Wi-Fi. Replace any factory-default or supplied administrator credentials with a unique, strong password. Do not reuse the Wi-Fi password. CISA and NSA guidance also recommends changing supplied credentials and following the manufacturer’s hardening guidance (CISA and NSA, 2023).

2. Install current firmware
Firmware updates can include security patches. Check the router’s administration or system section for an update, and turn on automatic updates if the manufacturer offers that option. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance, published June 4, 2025, recommends applying security patches and changing default passwords (CISA, 2025).

Some providers manage firmware updates for supplied routers. Ask your provider how updates are delivered and whether you can check their status yourself.
3. Choose WPA2 or WPA3 encryption
In wireless or Wi-Fi security settings, select WPA2 or WPA3 and disable WEP and legacy WPA modes. CISA’s home-network guidance recommends WPA2 or WPA3; choose the strongest option that works with your household’s devices. The cited guidance does not establish that every device supports WPA3, so check compatibility before changing modes (CISA, “Telework Essentials,” 2020).

4. Pick a non-identifying Wi-Fi name
Change the default network name (SSID) if it identifies your router’s make or model, or reveals your household’s name or location. Choose a neutral name instead. CISA advises against SSIDs that identify a user’s physical location or router make and model (CISA, “Telework Essentials,” 2020).

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
5. Turn off remote management and unneeded services
Review the router’s administration, advanced, or services menus. Disable features you do not use, especially settings that allow management or upgrades from outside the home network. CISA’s home-network guidance identifies remote management, remote upgrade, DMZ, UPnP, and unnecessary services as settings to review (CISA, “Home Network Security,” 2011).
- Remote management: Turn it off unless you have a specific need to administer the router from outside your home. Avoid exposing its management interface to the internet.
- UPnP: Disable it if no device or application in your household needs it. If you rely on a particular device or app, check its requirements before turning the feature off.
- DMZ: Leave it disabled unless you understand why a device needs to be placed there and have checked the implications.
- Remote upgrade and other services: Turn off options you do not need, while keeping features required for your network to work.
These controls can affect connectivity or specific applications. If a service is necessary, keep it only after understanding its purpose and impact; CISA and NSA caution that configuration choices should account for user impact (CISA and NSA, 2023).

6. Consider protective DNS
CISA’s 2020 telework guidance recommends using a protective DNS service. The cited guidance does not name or compare providers, so check your router’s documentation or ask your provider what DNS options it supports before changing this setting (CISA, “Telework Essentials,” 2020).
7. Check whether the router is still supported
Look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s support or lifecycle page and confirm that it still receives security updates. If support has ended, consider replacing it: CISA advises replacing devices that no longer receive security support (CISA, 2025). For a replacement, check that the exact model supports WPA2 or WPA3 for your devices and receives firmware updates; no specific router model is endorsed here.

Where to find settings—and when to stop
Router interfaces use different labels and may group controls in a phone app, web interface, or provider account. Use the current manual or manufacturer support page for the exact model rather than guessing at an unfamiliar option. If you have ISP-managed equipment, your provider may restrict access or handle updates for you.
These changes reduce common security weaknesses; they do not make a network invulnerable. Make the core changes first—administrator credentials, firmware, and wireless encryption—then review optional services without disabling anything your household needs.
