There is no universal preset for a spatial audio microphone. Start by identifying what the microphone actually outputs: separate raw capsule signals, already encoded Ambisonics, or a product-specific mode such as a device’s own binaural recording option. Then make the recorder, channel layout, gain, orientation, format, and monitoring settings agree with that output and with the workflow that will receive the recording.
For a four-capsule microphone such as the Sennheiser AMBEO VR MIC, the documented setup is four separate tracks through identical preamps, with gains matched across all four channels. Its raw A-format signals may then need conversion to B-format for the intended Ambisonics workflow. Those instructions describe that microphone and workflow—not a preset for every spatial microphone.

First identify the signal your microphone records
“Spatial audio microphone” describes a purpose, not one standard output. Different devices can deliver different signal formats, and the right recorder settings depend on that format. Check the microphone’s manual and the recorder or app documentation before choosing a track count or recording mode.

Some arrays send the individual capsule signals to the recorder as separate channels. This is commonly called A-format. Each capsule feed needs its own discrete input channel and recording track; combining the feeds into a mono or stereo track at capture would not preserve the separate signals needed by a compatible conversion workflow.

The Sennheiser AMBEO VR MIC is a four-capsule example. Sennheiser’s recording guide says to record its four capsule signals separately on four tracks, using identical microphone preamplifiers. The resulting A-format feeds can be converted to B-format with a compatible converter before they enter the downstream Ambisonics workflow.
Encoded Ambisonics: B-format
Other microphones or recording chains provide an Ambisonics-encoded signal rather than separate raw capsule feeds. In that case, confirm the format and channel ordering expected by the recorder, DAW, decoder, and final delivery target. Do not assume that a channel arrangement suitable for one device is suitable for another.
Product-specific spatial or binaural modes
Some products offer their own recording modes. For example, Sony’s ECM-AX10 guide instructs users to select SPATIAL and then choose either four-channel AmbiX recording or two-channel binaural recording in its app. These are product-specific instructions, not universal names or options to look for on every microphone. Follow the manual for the exact microphone and app you use.
Choose the output that suits the recording and delivery workflow
Ambisonics and binaural are not interchangeable labels for the same capture. Ambisonics preserves a multichannel sound-field representation that can be decoded for a compatible listening or playback setup. Binaural recording produces two channels intended to represent a spatial listening experience over headphones. The appropriate choice depends on what the microphone can record and what the next stage of your workflow accepts.

Before recording, check compatibility across the entire chain: microphone output, recorder inputs, conversion software if needed, DAW or decoder, monitoring path, and final platform or deliverable. If you need to change format later, make sure the recorded channels contain the signals required for that conversion. A two-channel binaural capture is not the same thing as preserving four raw capsule feeds for later Ambisonics conversion.

The table describes workflow categories, not a universal ranking. If the final destination is unspecified, there is no evidence-based way to declare one format best for every reader.
Set channel count and tracks to match the output
Count the microphone’s outputs before opening the recorder session. For raw capsule feeds, the input count must accommodate the microphone’s separate channels, and each feed should remain on its own track. For an encoded or product-specific mode, use the channel count and track layout specified by that device’s documentation.

- Check the recorder or app. Confirm that it can accept the required number of simultaneous inputs and record them in the required configuration.
- Create the matching tracks or mode. Keep raw capsule channels separate. If the microphone outputs encoded audio or records a spatial mode in its app, use the documented configuration rather than applying the four-track example automatically.
- Record a short test. Confirm that every expected channel is present and that the receiving software can decode or interpret the result.
A recorder that can capture the required number of channels is only one part of compatibility. The downstream software must also understand the signal format and any channel-order convention used in the recording.

Match gain across array channels
For an array microphone, keep the capsule-channel preamp gains matched. Sennheiser specifically recommends identical preamplifier settings for the four AMBEO VR MIC capsule signals. Its guidance also warns that even small differences can affect the spatial image, and says that any gain adjustment during a take must be applied equally to all four channels.
Where supported, linked, digitally controlled gains can help keep array channels together. If you adjust gain during recording, change all relevant channels by the same amount rather than altering one capsule feed on its own. A single-channel change can make the channels no longer match, which may influence the spatial image.
No single gain value is established for every microphone, recorder, source, and acoustic scene. Set levels using the specific microphone and recorder instructions, monitor the recording, and avoid treating a numeric gain setting from another setup as a universal target. The important documented requirement for the AMBEO four-channel workflow is that the gains remain identical across its channels.

Tell the software how the microphone is oriented
Physical mounting and software orientation must agree. If the conversion software assumes an upright microphone while the microphone is mounted upside down or endfire, the sound image may not align with the actual recording orientation. Set the orientation in the recorder or converter according to the microphone’s position, using only options supported by that workflow.

Sennheiser’s converter provides upright, upside-down, and endfire positions, as well as a horizontal rotation correction that can align the sound image with video. Those controls are specific to its converter. Other software may use different labels or provide different controls, so use the corresponding product documentation rather than assuming the same choices are available.
Make orientation part of the test recording: capture a short sample with the microphone in its actual mounted position, then check that the decoded image and any video alignment behave as expected before recording a full take.
Confirm Ambisonics format and channel order
“Ambisonics” alone does not tell you the order in which channels appear in a file or how software should interpret them. Confirm the expected format and channel ordering at both ends of the workflow. A file can contain the right number of channels and still be interpreted incorrectly if the receiving software expects a different order.
In Sennheiser’s converter, Classic FuMa uses W-X-Y-Z order, while ambiX uses W-Y-Z-X. That comparison applies to the converter’s documented formats; do not assume that another device, app, or delivery system uses either order by default. Match the recorded format to the DAW, decoder, or platform receiving it, and verify the result with a test recording.

Use correction and low-cut filters only when appropriate
Filter controls are workflow-specific, and a factory default is not automatically the right setting for every scene. In Sennheiser’s converter, the Ambisonics correction filter is on by default to optimize the 360-degree sound image. Its low-cut filter is off by default and can be used to cut interfering low frequencies.
Consider a low-cut filter when rumble or other unwanted low-frequency noise is present. If the recording needs low-frequency content, filtering it out may remove wanted sound. Check which processing is enabled in the actual recording or conversion chain and note it for whoever will handle the audio later. The Sennheiser defaults should not be generalized to other microphones or software.
Choose sample rate, bit depth, and monitoring together
Use a sample rate and bit depth supported by every device and application in the recording and post-production chain, and appropriate to the intended deliverable. A setting that the recorder accepts may still be incompatible with a plugin, converter, monitoring path, or later software step. Check recording limits separately from monitoring limits.

It supports sample rates up to 192 kHz, while binaural monitoring is not supported above 48 kHz. These are limits for the documented Sound Devices workflow, not universal limits for spatial microphones or all Ambisonics recording.

If you select a recording rate above 48 kHz in that workflow, do not infer from the recording-rate support that binaural monitoring will also work at that rate. Likewise, do not treat the plugin’s bit-depth limits as requirements for unrelated equipment. Verify the exact recorder and plugin compatibility information for the versions in your chain.

A practical preflight sequence
- Identify the output format. Read the microphone manual and determine whether the device supplies separate capsule feeds, encoded Ambisonics, or a product-specific spatial mode.
- Confirm the input and power requirements. Check the microphone’s documentation against the recorder or app before connecting and setting up the session.

- Choose processing deliberately. Check correction and low-cut settings in the actual workflow; use low cut only when unwanted low-frequency noise justifies it.
- Verify recording and monitoring limits. Select a sample rate and bit depth supported throughout the chain, and check whether monitoring has a separate limit.
- Test before the full take. Record a short sample, open it in the downstream software, and verify that the channels decode with the expected orientation and spatial image.
Common setup errors and how to prevent them
- Using the wrong channel count: Raw capsule feeds need separate inputs and tracks. Check the microphone’s output before creating the session.
- Changing only one array channel’s gain: For the documented AMBEO setup, Sennheiser calls for matched gains and equal changes across all four channels. Use linked gains where supported.
- Assuming a channel order: Verify whether the receiving software expects the format and ordering actually recorded; a channel count alone does not establish compatibility.
- Ignoring microphone orientation: Configure the converter to reflect the actual mounting position and verify alignment with a test.
- Copying another workflow’s sample-rate or bit-depth limits: The Sound Devices plugin figures describe that plugin workflow only. Check the manuals for each device and application in your chain.
- Confusing recording support with monitoring support: A workflow may allow a recording rate that its binaural monitoring path does not support, as the Sound Devices example demonstrates.
- Leaving filters at defaults without listening: Defaults belong to a particular product. Evaluate unwanted rumble against wanted low-frequency content and confirm which processing is enabled.
