For supported games, set the PS5’s game preset to Performance Mode to prioritize smoother motion; choose Resolution Mode when image quality matters more. To limit what the console does while idle, turn off unneeded Rest Mode features such as internet connectivity, downloads, or USB power. Neither change guarantees a fixed frame rate or power saving: results depend on the game, connected display, and which features remain enabled.
Choose a game preset for smoother motion or image quality
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. Select Performance Mode when smoother motion is your priority, or Resolution Mode when you prefer higher graphic quality. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to review the output settings and connected HDMI device information. Features such as 120 Hz output and variable refresh rate (VRR) can help a compatible game and display use their intended refresh behavior, but they are not universal performance fixes. Their availability and effect depend on the game, display, and connection.

VRR and 120 Hz
Enable 120 Hz output only when both the game and display support it. VRR likewise requires compatible equipment and a game that can use the feature. The PS5 can apply VRR to unsupported games, but PlayStation advises turning that option off if gameplay behaves unexpectedly. ALLM
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) can switch a compatible TV to its low-latency mode during gameplay. It depends on TV support; check the TV manual and use an appropriate HDMI input. PlayStation describes the feature on its PS5 features page. ALLM changes the display’s behavior, not the game’s rendering mode.

Reduce activity while the PS5 is in Rest Mode
Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Review the available functions and disable those you do not use. Depending on the selected options, Rest Mode can keep the console connected to the internet, provide USB power, and support other idle functions. Choose how automatic downloads and updates work
Automatic game and app downloads or installations can run in Rest Mode when internet connectivity is enabled. If you want updates ready when you return, leave the relevant options on. If you want to limit idle downloads and installations, disable the options you do not need in the console’s automatic download and update settings.
There is a useful distinction for suspended games: PlayStation advises enabling Auto-Download only if you want to keep a suspended game from being closed for an update. Use Do Not Disturb for fewer interruptions
Do Not Disturb temporarily hides notification pop-ups, and notification settings can also be adjusted by category. This can make play less interruptive, but PlayStation’s notification guide describes a presentation control, not a way to increase frame rate.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect 4K/120 Hz output
If 4K/120 Hz output is unavailable or behaves incorrectly, check the display’s capabilities, the HDMI port used, and the console’s output settings. PlayStation recommends an appropriate HDMI 2.1 port and, where possible, connecting the PS5 directly to the display. Check that resolution and transfer-rate settings are suitable for the equipment. Use the cable included with the console or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz, as described in PlayStation’s video-output troubleshooting guidance. A cable change is relevant only when the existing connection is not suitable; it is not a general frame-rate upgrade.

Make changes based on your priority
- For smoother motion, start with Performance Mode in games that support it.
- For higher graphic quality, choose Resolution Mode where available.
- Enable VRR or 120 Hz only when the game and display support the feature, and disable an option if it causes unexpected behavior.
- For less idle activity, turn off Rest Mode functions you do not use and choose an update policy that fits your routine.
- For fewer interruptions, use notification controls rather than expecting a performance change.
