On supported CFI-7000 model group consoles, PS5’s PSSR image-quality option is at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says it is on by default and applies to certain PSSR-compatible games, so you generally do not need to turn it on manually. Resolution, HDR, VRR and 120 Hz are separate output settings—not PSSR switches.
Where to find the PS5 PSSR setting
- Open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Find Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says this setting is on by default and can be turned off here. It is listed for CFI-7000 model group consoles and certain PSSR-compatible games. Sony’s PS5 resolution support guide describes the option and its availability.
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. The menu option is not documented as a universal setting across every PS5 model or every game. If it is missing, check the console’s model group and whether the game supports PSSR before changing unrelated display options.

Keep resolution separate from PSSR
The Resolution setting controls the video output sent to the display. With Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution supported by the connected TV. That choice does not switch PSSR on or off.

Sony says the test can cover SDR or HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz, plus VRR when supported. The modes available depend on the connected display.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
1440p can also have a distinct image-quality benefit: Sony says a game rendered at a higher native resolution, such as 4K, may benefit from improved anti-aliasing when supersampled down to 1440p output. That is separate from the Enhance PSSR Image Quality control. Sony’s PS5 features page explains the 1440p supersampling case.
What the other video-output settings do
| Setting | What it changes | When to adjust it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Output resolution; Automatic selects the highest resolution the TV supports, according to Sony. | Choose a manual mode only if you have a display-specific reason. Check the available combinations with Test 1440p Output if relevant. |
| VRR | Lets refresh rate adjust in real time with compatible TVs and games. | Enable it for a compatible display and game if you want variable refresh. Sony notes results vary by TV and game. |
| 120 Hz Output | Allows 120 Hz output for compatible displays and games. | Use it when the display and game support it; Sony advises turning it off if it causes video-output problems. |
| ALLM | Allows a compatible TV to switch to low-latency mode while gaming. | This is a latency feature, not an upscaling control. Sony notes ALLM may still activate with VRR output even when ALLM is set to Off; to fully turn it off, VRR must also be off. |
| HDR | Controls high dynamic range output. On When Supported leaves non-HDR content in SDR; Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output. | Choose based on your display and preference. HDR does not enable PSSR. |
| Video Transfer Rate | Can limit the signal transfer rate. | If the screen flickers, Sony recommends trying -1 or -2; doing so can limit some output combinations. This is troubleshooting, not an upscaling setting. |
Choose output modes for your display and game
There is no single best combination for every TV, monitor and game. First use the display’s supported resolution and refresh rate as boundaries, then decide whether your priority is the intended image output, smoother motion or lower latency. VRR and 120 Hz require compatible display and game support, and Sony says VRR results vary by TV and game.

- For a compatible game on a supported console, leave Enhance PSSR Image Quality on unless you have a reason to disable it.
- Use Automatic resolution as a straightforward starting point; test 1440p when you want to confirm the display’s supported combinations or evaluate its separate supersampling benefit.
- Treat HDR, VRR, 120 Hz and ALLM as display-output choices, not ways to activate PSSR.
If PSSR or an output mode is unavailable
Check the console model group and the game’s compatibility first. Then verify the connected HDMI device information, display specifications and the full cable path, including any receiver, switch or adapter between the console and screen. A display may not expose every resolution, refresh-rate, HDR or VRR combination.

Sony recommends the included PS5 cable for ALLM; it says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supporting HDMI 2.1 should also support ALLM. This is a compatibility troubleshooting point, not an upgrade that turns on PSSR. For screen flicker, try the Video Transfer Rate setting described above rather than treating a cable change as an upscaling fix. Sony’s resolution guide covers the console’s related output controls.
