Short answer: a standard PS5 cannot read original PS2 game discs. You can play some PS2-era games through a current PlayStation Plus Premium catalog or through PS4/PS5 remasters and remakes, but those are separate products or services, not disc backward compatibility. An unofficial project called PS5SX2 can run some PS2 software on a jailbroken PS5, yet its compatibility is title-specific and still developing; there is no trustworthy list claiming that every PS2 game works.
What “PS5 emulation” can mean
People use the phrase for three different situations. Keeping them separate prevents the most common mistake—assuming that a PS2 disc, a streamed catalog title and a homebrew emulator all have the same support.

Can a normal PS5 play PS2 discs?
No. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation 5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, answers the question about original PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 games with: “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” The “more than 99%” statistic describes PS4 compatibility; it is not a claim about PS2 titles.
A PS5 model with a Blu-ray drive can play DVD video, but that optical capability does not make a PS2 game disc readable as a game. The Digital Edition has no optical-disc support at all. In either case, inserting a PS2 disc is not an official route to playing it.

PlayStation Plus Premium streaming
Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide identifies original PS2 titles among the games that can be streamed through the Premium plan in select markets. Streaming availability is title-specific, and the catalog and plan terms can change. A game that appears in one country may be absent in another, so check the catalog shown by your own account before subscribing or promising that a particular title is available.
This route gives you access to Sony’s hosted version of a game. It does not authenticate or install the PS2 disc in your collection, and owning the disc does not by itself add the title to your Premium library.
PS4 and PS5 remasters or remakes
Some games that began on PS2 have separately released remastered or remade editions for PS4 and PS5. Those releases are downloaded or purchased in the normal console storefront and run as modern PS4/PS5 software. Their existence does not change the backward-compatibility status of the original PS2 disc.

What PS5SX2 adds—and what it does not prove
PS5SX2 is an unofficial homebrew project that ports PCSX2 to run natively on a jailbroken PS5. It is not a Sony feature, and installing it is a fundamentally different undertaking from using the console’s supported software.

Documented prerequisites
The project documentation requires all of the following:
- A PS5 that can be jailbroken with a currently supported exploit and firmware combination.
- The helper or payload components and mounting components required by the project’s current release.
- A PlayStation 2 BIOS dumped from your own PS2.
- User-supplied PS2 game images made from games you own or otherwise have the right to use.
The project identifies a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40 as its development machine. That detail describes the developers’ environment, not a guarantee that every PS5 model or firmware revision is supported. Before changing a console, compare its exact model and firmware with the current project documentation.

Features are not compatibility guarantees
PS5SX2 describes upscaling to as much as six times native resolution, 4K output, image filters, per-game settings, and optional widescreen or 60 FPS patches. Those are capabilities exposed by the emulator; they do not mean that every game reaches a stable full-speed frame rate, renders without glitches or behaves like original hardware.
Compatibility work across the PS2 library is ongoing. One successful boot, a screenshot showing 4K output or a feature demonstration cannot establish that the rest of the library works. A patch that improves one title can also introduce problems in another, so keep settings on a per-game basis and retain a known-good configuration.
Why a PCSX2 compatibility result does not transfer automatically
PCSX2 maintains tested compatibility information for its PC builds and directs users to that list when checking a game. Its FAQ also notes that emulator changes can fix one title while creating a regression elsewhere. PS5SX2 uses a different build, hardware platform, firmware environment and set of patches. Consequently, a PCSX2 rating is useful background but is not evidence that the same game will work on a PS5.

Do not publish or rely on a blanket “working PS2 games on PS5” list unless every entry is backed by a current PS5SX2 report that identifies the title, region or revision, emulator build, PS5 model, firmware and settings. Without those details, “works” could mean only that a menu appeared, not that a complete play-through is possible.

- Identify the exact game. Record the region, disc revision and whether you are checking an original disc, a dump or a remaster. Different revisions can behave differently in an emulator.
- Check the official route first. Search the PlayStation Store for a PS4/PS5 remaster or remake and check the Premium catalog displayed for your country. Treat those as separate products from the PS2 disc.
- Confirm your homebrew environment. For PS5SX2, verify the PS5 model and firmware against the current jailbreak and project requirements. Do not assume that a supported development machine represents your console.
- Prepare only user-supplied files. Use a BIOS dump from your own PS2 and a game image made from your own disc collection, following the project’s current documentation for file placement and mounting.
- Find a title-specific PS5SX2 report. Look for the exact game revision, emulator build, console model and firmware. A PCSX2 report alone is insufficient.
- Test conservatively. Start at native resolution with no widescreen or 60 FPS patch. Confirm that the game reaches gameplay, loads several areas and maintains audio and timing before adding enhancements.
- Record the result. Note the settings, glitches, crashes and performance. If the project requests reports or logs, include those details so another user can reproduce the result.
What “working” should mean
Compatibility reports are more useful when they distinguish levels of success instead of using one word. A game that boots to its title screen is not equivalent to one that survives a complete campaign.
- Does not boot: the emulator crashes, hangs or shows no usable image.
- Boots only: menus appear, but gameplay, saves or loading screens fail.
- Playable with defects: the game can be played, but it has repeatable graphics, audio, input or timing errors.
- Playable with per-game settings: a documented configuration avoids known problems.
- Stable in tested scope: a specific tester has completed a defined portion or the full game on a named build and setup.
Even the strongest category is bounded by the tested build and hardware. A future emulator update, firmware change or enhancement patch can alter the result.

Console and firmware dependency
PS5SX2 depends on a jailbreak that works for a particular firmware and console model. A system update can change that situation, while a model that was never tested may have different behavior. Check support before updating or modifying the console.
BIOS and game-image requirements
The emulator does not supply a universal PS2 BIOS or a library of games. You must provide the BIOS dump and game files required by the documentation. Missing, corrupt or mismatched files can look like an emulator compatibility problem even when the title itself is supported.

Enhancement patches
Six-times scaling, 4K output, widescreen codes and 60 FPS patches increase the number of variables. A game that runs at native resolution may show broken geometry, incorrect effects or unstable timing after a patch is enabled. Establish a clean baseline before tuning visuals.
Regression risk
Emulator development is not a one-way compatibility ladder. Code that fixes timing or graphics for one game can expose a regression in another. Keep previous builds and per-game settings where the project permits it, and read the release notes and issue reports for your exact version.
Catalog and market changes
Official streaming availability is controlled by Sony’s current catalog and regional agreements. A title can leave a catalog, appear only in selected markets or have different plan requirements later. Recheck the listing when you are ready to play rather than relying on an old article or video.
Which route fits your situation?
| Your priority | Most suitable route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Insert an existing PS2 disc and play immediately | None on a standard PS5 | The console does not provide original PS2 disc backward compatibility. |
| Use a supported, low-setup console feature | Premium streaming, if the title and market qualify | No jailbreak or BIOS dump is required, but catalog access is not permanent or universal. |
| Own a modern downloadable edition | PS4/PS5 remaster or remake | It runs as supported current-generation software, when such an edition exists. |
| Experiment with local emulation and enhancements | PS5SX2 on compatible jailbroken hardware | It offers advanced rendering options, but requires technical preparation and accepts incomplete compatibility. |
| Infer support from a PC emulator database | Do not rely on that alone | PCSX2 results describe PC builds, not the PS5SX2 environment. |
The reliable answer to “which games work?”
There is no single, permanent list of PS2 games that “work with PS5 emulation.” On an unmodified PS5, the answer is limited to whatever original PS2 titles Sony currently streams in your Premium market and whichever PS2-era games have current PS4/PS5 re-releases. On PS5SX2, support must be checked one title at a time against the project’s current reports.
That distinction is the practical limit: the platform, access method, game edition, console model, firmware and emulator build all matter. Treat a title as confirmed only when those variables match a current report; otherwise, regard it as unverified rather than guaranteed.
