Popularity rankings are useful only when you know who or what was counted—and they do not, by themselves, tell you which language best fits a project.
What do the latest popularity rankings actually measure?
Stack Overflow and GitHub offer two useful but different views. Stack Overflow asks developers to report their experience and interests; GitHub counts activity on its own platform. Neither is a census of all programmers, and their rankings should not be read as interchangeable global league tables.

| Source and edition | What is counted | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Overflow Developer Survey, 2025 | Respondents’ self-reported extensive development work over the past year, alongside languages they want to work with over the next year | What participating developers say they used or want to use |
| GitHub Octoverse, 2025 | Contributors using each language on GitHub, with the cited comparison taken in August 2025 | Relative contributor activity on GitHub at that time |
| GitHub Octoverse, 2024 | A broad platform-activity measure that includes commits, issues, pull requests, comments, discussions, pushed code, and reviewed pull requests | How language rankings can change when the activity measure changes |
For the Stack Overflow language question, respondents saw: “Which programming, scripting, and markup languages have you done extensive development work in over the past year, and which do you want to work in over the next year?” That wording combines two distinct ideas—recent use and future interest—so check which part of the results you are reading. The 2025 survey received more than 49,000 responses from 177 countries across 62 questions and 314 technologies; 31,771 people answered the language question. Its percentages describe those respondents, not every developer worldwide. Stack Overflow’s 2025 language results and survey overview provide the underlying context.
Why can Python and TypeScript both lead?
Python’s rise in Stack Overflow’s survey
Stack Overflow reported that Python adoption among survey respondents rose by 7 percentage points from 2024 to 2025. The survey associates Python with AI, data science, and back-end development. This is a year-over-year change in survey results, not a claim that Python gained seven percentage points of all programming work worldwide. Stack Overflow’s 2025 results
TypeScript’s contributor lead on GitHub
GitHub’s Octoverse 2025 says TypeScript became its most-used language by contributor count in August 2025, passing Python by about 42,000 contributors. That is a platform-specific contributor comparison, not a measurement of all developers or all code written. GitHub also cautions that other indices use different methods and may place JavaScript or Python higher. GitHub Octoverse 2025
Even one platform can produce different rankings
GitHub’s 2024 report put Python first under a broad platform-activity measure, while JavaScript remained first when the measure was code pushes alone. The broad measure also counted commits, issues, pull requests, comments, discussions, and reviewed pull requests. A ranking can change without any contradiction: the answer depends on which actions are counted. GitHub Octoverse 2024
What do the numbers suggest about language use cases?
Python: AI, data science, and back-end work
Stack Overflow connects Python with AI, data science, and back-end development, while GitHub describes it as remaining dominant for AI and data science workloads. Those are broad associations, not exclusive uses: the data does not show that Python is the only suitable choice for these areas or that every project in them uses it.
TypeScript: a strong contributor signal, not a project-fit verdict
TypeScript’s GitHub contributor lead shows substantial activity on that platform. The contributor ranking alone does not establish which types of applications it serves best, or whether it is the right choice for a particular team or project.

JavaScript: a reminder to check the metric
JavaScript’s first-place position for GitHub code pushes in 2024, alongside Python’s lead in broader activity, illustrates why a single popularity label can obscure meaningful differences. “Most used” needs a defined measure and date.
Rust: high admiration is not high usage
In Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey, Rust was the most admired language at 72%. “Admired” reflects continued-use interest among existing users; it is not a measure of usage share, total developer count, or universal technical superiority. Stack Overflow’s 2025 technology results

How should you use popularity data to choose a language?
Treat rankings as context, then make a project-level decision. The reports do not provide a complete, uniform language-to-project decision matrix. Consider these factors directly:
- Project requirements: Identify the platforms, performance needs, integrations, and libraries the project requires.
- Ecosystem: Check whether the language has the tools and packages your work depends on.
- Team familiarity: A language already understood by the people maintaining the project may be more practical than one leading a popularity chart.
- Learning goal: If you are choosing what to study, distinguish a language developers report using from one they say they want to use or admire.
Before acting on a chart, ask four questions: what is counted, who or what is in the sample, what the figure means, and whether that evidence matches your work. A survey response, contributor count, code-push rank, and admiration score answer different questions. Use the one that fits your decision—and do not treat any of them as a substitute for project requirements.
