For everyday letters, forms, and mixed documents, start with Normal or Standard quality and set the driver to match the paper actually loaded. Use Draft, Fast, or an economy mode for internal copies when lighter output is acceptable; choose a higher-quality or photo mode when fine image detail matters. The labels and results vary by printer, driver, and paper.
Choose a setting for the job
| Print job | Starting setting | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Internal text draft | Draft, Fast, or an available economy mode; plain paper | These modes are intended to print faster or use less ink on supported printers, with a possible tradeoff in darkness or sharpness. HP describes Economode as suited mainly to text and line drawings. See HP’s Economode guidance. |
| Routine letter, form, or mixed document | Normal or Standard; select the loaded paper type | HP calls Normal suitable for most jobs, and Epson describes it for everyday text and images. See HP’s quality guidance and Epson’s quality options. |
| Photo or image where detail matters | Higher quality or photo mode, with compatible photo paper | Higher quality can improve detail, but may take longer and can use more ink. Set the media type to the photo paper you are using. See HP’s paper and quality guidance. |
| Document intended to look monochrome | Grayscale or black-and-white, if available | This changes the intended appearance, but does not guarantee every printer will avoid color ink. Check the manual for the exact model. HP notes that some models mix black and color inks to reduce grain. See HP’s printing instructions. |
Why Normal is usually the right default
For routine documents, the highest quality setting is usually unnecessary. HP says most text-only documents need Normal or lower quality, while Epson describes Normal as appropriate for everyday text and images. Normal is a useful baseline: it avoids choosing a slower, higher-detail mode when the job does not need it. See HP’s guidance on choosing print quality.

Move down to Draft, Fast, or an economy option when you are printing a working copy and can accept lighter or less refined output. Move up to a higher-quality setting for photos or graphics where small details matter. There is no universal ink-saving percentage for these choices: the manufacturer guidance describes qualitative tradeoffs, not a guaranteed amount saved for every printer or document.

In the print dialog or printer driver, choose the media type that corresponds to the paper loaded—not simply the paper you intend to use. The printer uses that selection to control how it lays down ink. For an ordinary draft on plain paper, select plain paper; for compatible photo paper, select the corresponding photo-paper type. HP specifically advises matching the selected type to the loaded paper: HP paper-setting guidance.

Paper type can affect which quality options are available. Epson’s driver documentation also notes that options can depend on the selected paper and border settings. If a setting is missing, check those selections and consult the manual for your printer and driver version: Epson print quality options.
Understand the quality, speed, and ink tradeoff
Quality controls balance detail against print time and, depending on the printer and job, ink use. HP states, “Higher DPI produces better documents but slows print speed,” and cautions that higher print quality might use more ink. That is a directional tradeoff, not a promise that a particular DPI or quality level will produce a fixed improvement or ink cost on every model. See HP’s printing instructions and HP’s print-quality guidance.

- 1 ream (500 sheets) of 8.5 x 11 white copier and printer paper for home or office use
- Multipurpose letter size copy paper works with laser/inkjet printers, copiers and fax machines
- Smooth 20lb weight paper for consistent ink and toner distribution; dries quickly and resists paper jams
- Bright white paper (92 GE; 104 Euro) offers great contrast for crisp printing and vivid color
- Virgin copy paper providing professional quality results; acid-free to prevent yellowing
Economy features are similarly model- and driver-dependent. HP’s Economode example uses lower rendering resolution and less ink while reducing quality; Epson documents Economy and Fast Economy options as reduced-quality or draft modes. HP’s instruction to choose Fast for drafts and Economode for greater economy applies only where those controls are supported: HP Economode guidance. The exact setting names and effects are not identical across brands.
Two ink-saving misconceptions to avoid
Grayscale does not always leave color cartridges unused
Some printers mix black and color inks to smooth monochrome output, and printer servicing can also consume ink. If avoiding color-ink use is important, check the manual for your exact model rather than assuming the grayscale option uses only black ink. HP describes this as model-dependent behavior in its printing instructions.

Do not run printhead cleaning without a reason
Cleaning cycles use ink. HP recommends cleaning only when needed, such as when print quality indicates a problem, rather than as a routine way to improve every job. Follow the printer’s troubleshooting guidance for your model: HP cleaning and Economode guidance.

- Load the paper suited to the job, then select that paper type in the print dialog or driver.
- For routine documents, leave quality at Normal or Standard.
- For internal drafts, switch to Draft, Fast, or economy mode if available and acceptable for the text.
- For photos or detail-heavy images, use a higher-quality or photo setting and select the compatible photo-paper type.
- Use grayscale for monochrome appearance, but verify cartridge behavior in your model’s manual if color-ink use matters.
- Reserve printhead cleaning for an actual print-quality issue.
These are cross-manufacturer starting points, not universal menu instructions. The Epson reference describes driver options for a particular software context and is older; consult current documentation for your printer before relying on a specific control.
