PowerToys is a free, open-source set of Windows utilities, but Microsoft’s feature descriptions can’t establish that any tool changed someone’s habits over a week. Rather than pretend to have tested them, here’s what the documented utilities do, which workflows they suit, and the limits to know before installing.
What PowerToys does
Microsoft describes PowerToys as a collection of utilities for Windows power users and developers. The tools cover tasks such as arranging windows, launching apps, remapping keys, working with files, extracting text, and automating parts of a workflow. It is software, not a paid hardware bundle. The current PowerToys overview lists tools including FancyZones, PowerToys Run, Command Palette, Keyboard Manager, PowerRename, Image Resizer, Text Extractor, Workspaces, and more; names and availability can change.

There is no single best utility for everyone. The most useful starting point depends on a recurring annoyance: opening the same app layout, launching tools, repeating a keyboard shortcut, or handling batches of files. The examples below explain what Microsoft documents, not measured time savings or personal test results.

Launch apps and commands
PowerToys Run is a launcher opened with Alt+Space by default. Its documented functions include finding and launching apps and files, calculations, system commands, unit conversions, hashes, GUIDs, web searches, and plugins. It needs PowerToys running in the background.

Command Palette is a distinct interface with a different default shortcut: Win+Alt+Space. Its documented scope includes launching apps and commands, file search, web browsing, clipboard history, Windows services and Registry access, Remote Desktop, system metrics, and access to PowerToys modules. Microsoft describes it in the Run documentation as Run’s evolution toward version 2. They overlap in launcher-like tasks, but are not interchangeable descriptions of one interface; check the current documentation for their evolving status and capabilities.
Change keys or shortcuts
Keyboard Manager can remap individual keys and shortcuts, send Unicode text sequences, and apply a mapping globally or only in a chosen application. To make a change, open PowerToys settings, select Keyboard Manager, enable it, then choose the key- or shortcut-remapping option and set the original input, replacement, and scope. Remove the mapping in Keyboard Manager to undo it.
PowerToys must remain running for mappings to work. Windows-reserved combinations such as Win+L and Ctrl+Alt+Delete cannot be remapped, and the Fn key generally cannot be remapped either. Treat a mapping as a deliberate change to input behavior: verify its scope and replacement before relying on it.

Reopen a group of apps in a saved arrangement
Workspaces captures a set of applications and their positions, then launches them into the saved arrangement, optionally from a shortcut. It can be useful when a task regularly calls for opening the same combination of apps.
It does not guarantee a seamless restoration of a snapped desktop. Apps may appear first and then move when Workspaces repositions them, and Microsoft says its mechanism does not include snapping capabilities. Directly pinning a workspace to the taskbar is unsupported; Microsoft’s documented alternative is to pin a desktop shortcut.
Other tasks covered by the collection
The overview also lists tools for file renaming and resizing, previewing files, extracting text from the screen, measuring on-screen distances, keeping a window on top, changing display and mouse behavior, and arranging windows. Consult the current overview for the full list and the appropriate utility for a specific task; the collection changes over time.

How to install PowerToys on Windows 11 or Windows 10
Microsoft’s installation guide lists Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1/build 19041) or newer, plus a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor, as minimum requirements. It offers installation through Microsoft Store, GitHub, and package managers including WinGet; Chocolatey and Scoop are also covered.
- Check that your Windows version and processor meet the requirements in the PowerToys installation instructions.
- Choose one of the installation routes listed there: Microsoft Store, GitHub, or a supported package manager.
- After installation, open PowerToys settings and enable only the utilities you intend to use. General settings document startup behavior, update controls, diagnostics, backup and restore, and a Quick Access flyout for toggling utilities.
The installation guide says the bootstrapper installs the latest stable Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime during setup. Check Microsoft’s current guide for up-to-date requirements and steps.
Is PowerToys worth installing?
It is worth considering if a documented utility addresses a task you repeat and you are comfortable with the relevant setup and limits. Start with one concrete need: a launcher, a key remap, or a saved app arrangement. For tools that depend on PowerToys running in the background, account for that requirement; use General settings to manage startup and back up or restore settings. Feature documentation alone does not show how much time a utility will save in your own workflow, so judge it by whether it solves your specific task reliably.
