For an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Founders Edition, choose a power supply rated for at least 650 W. The card can connect through the included adapter with two dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables, or through a native PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 360 W. Check the exact card model and the rest of your PC before buying: 650 W is NVIDIA’s reference-system recommendation, not a guarantee for every build.
What NVIDIA recommends for the RTX 5070
NVIDIA lists 250 W total graphics power and 650 W required system power for the RTX 5070 reference design or Founders Edition. The 650 W figure is for the whole PC, not the graphics card alone; NVIDIA bases it on a system configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X. NVIDIA also cautions that power requirements can vary with system configuration. NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 specifications

For the Founders Edition, the RTX 5070 user guide specifies at least a 650 W system PSU and two supported power connections: two PCIe 8-pin cables used with the included adapter, or one PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for 360 W or greater. NVIDIA RTX 5070 user guide
Which power connection should you use?
| PSU connection | What to check | For the Founders Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Native PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable | Confirm the cable is intended for the PSU and meets the graphics card’s stated power rating. | NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 user guide calls for a cable rated at 360 W or greater. |
| Two PCIe 8-pin cables and the included adapter | Use two independent, dedicated PCIe cables from the PSU, not one cable with two daisy-chained plugs. | NVIDIA specifies this path for the included Founders Edition adapter. |
NVIDIA’s family specification page gives a different general threshold—300 W or greater—for a PCIe Gen 5 cable. For Founders Edition advice, follow the more specific 360 W threshold in the RTX 5070 user guide, and check the documentation for both your exact card and PSU. Do not assume that every cable described as a 16-pin or Gen 5 cable has the rating or compatibility your card requires.

How to choose a PSU for your particular RTX 5070
- Identify the exact graphics card. Check the manufacturer and full model name, not only “RTX 5070.” NVIDIA says add-in-card specifications can differ from the reference design.
- Read that model’s PSU recommendation and connector requirements. Use the card maker’s product specification or manual as the authority for its recommendation.
- Check the PSU’s rated wattage. For the Founders Edition, start at NVIDIA’s 650 W minimum. Treat a board maker’s model-specific recommendation as relevant to that card; do not assume the reference figure applies unchanged to every custom model.
- Verify the cable path. Confirm the PSU includes a native cable meeting the card’s stated rating, or has the required PCIe 8-pin cables for the card’s supplied adapter. A useful shopping search is “650W ATX 3.1 PSU with native 16-pin PCIe Gen 5 cable,” but verify the actual unit and cable rather than relying on that phrase alone.
- Account for the rest of the PC. The recommendation covers a system, and NVIDIA says requirements vary with configuration. Consider the processor and other components in your build; NVIDIA’s published material does not give a universal extra-wattage formula for higher-power CPUs, overclocking, or additional components.
Why checking the model matters
RTX 5070 cards from different board partners can carry their own recommendations. For example, MSI lists a 650 W PSU recommendation and recommends an ATX 3.1 PSU for its RTX 5070 12G VANGUARD OC. MSI RTX 5070 12G VANGUARD OC specifications Gainward recommends 650 W or greater in ATX 3.X for its RTX 5070 Phoenix-S. Gainward RTX 5070 Phoenix-S specifications These are model-specific examples, not universal requirements for all RTX 5070 cards.
Connect the Founders Edition adapter safely
If you use the included adapter, NVIDIA instructs Founders Edition owners to connect at least two independent, dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables. Insert the adapter’s 16-pin plug fully and make sure it sits flush against the graphics card’s receptacle. Follow the card and PSU instructions for your specific hardware.

Is a 750 W PSU enough?
A 750 W unit exceeds NVIDIA’s stated 650 W system minimum for the Founders Edition, but wattage alone cannot establish compatibility. Confirm that the PSU has the correct cable or adapter connections, meets the exact card model’s recommendation, and can serve the rest of your system.
