Which PlayStation Consoles Are Backward Compatible With Older Games? PS5, PS4, PS3 and PS2 Explained

PS5 runs most PS4 games, but PS4 and PS5 do not play PS3 discs. Learn the exact disc, digital, upgrade and model requirements for PS5, PS4, PS3 and PS2 backward compatibility.

Short answer: PS5 plays the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. A PS5 with a disc drive can read compatible PS4 discs, while the original PS5 Digital Edition cannot. PS4 games bought digitally remain available from your signed-in game library. Neither PS4 nor PS5 plays PS3 game discs, and Sony does not list original PlayStation, PS2 or PS3 discs as backward-compatible titles on PS5. PS2 is the PlayStation console Sony explicitly identifies as supporting original PlayStation discs. Exact PS3-to-PS2 compatibility depends on hardware revision and is not established by the official material available here, so do not assume every PS3 model works.

Backward compatibility by PlayStation generation

“Backward compatible” means the newer console runs software made for an older PlayStation generation, rather than a publisher selling a separate remaster or port. That distinction matters when you own a physical disc, because a PS4 release of an older game is not the same thing as inserting the original PS3, PS2 or PlayStation disc.

PS5 The overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games PS4 discs require a PS5 model with a working disc drive. The original Digital Edition cannot read discs. Some PS4 features may be missing, and Sony warns that a few games can show errors or unexpected behavior.
PS4 No native PS3, PS2 or original PlayStation playback A game may have a separate PS4 edition or upgrade, but that is a PS4 release rather than support for the older disc.
PS3 Model-specific PS2 support is not established here Do not generalize across PS3 revisions. Verify the exact model using a reliable, model-specific source before buying.
PS2 Original PlayStation discs Sony’s history page identifies PS2 backward compatibility with original PlayStation discs; check the individual console and game before purchasing used hardware.

For the current PS5 compatibility list and Sony’s warnings about individual titles, see PlayStation Support’s backward-compatibility page. Sony also describes the PS4/PS5 ecosystem as covering more than 4,000 PS4 games on its PS4 and PS5 ecosystem page.

Can PS5 play PS4 discs?

Yes—provided the PS5 has a disc drive and the specific PS4 title is compatible. Sony says the playable set is the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. Compatibility is not an assurance that every feature behaves identically: some PS4 functionality may be unavailable on PS5, and Sony notes that certain games can exhibit errors or unexpected behavior.

Using a PS4 disc on a disc-drive PS5

  1. Start the PS5 and sign in to the account you use for PlayStation games.
  2. Insert the PS4 game disc into the console.
  3. Allow any game update the PS5 requests. The update can be required for the supported PS4 build.
  4. Launch the game from the home screen while leaving the disc inserted. The disc acts as your license; removing it prevents play.

A PS4 disc cannot be used by the original PS5 Digital Edition because that console has no optical drive. If playing your existing disc collection is important, choose a PS5 model with a working drive; buying the digital model does not provide a way to add disc support for those games.

Digital PS4 games on PS5

Digital purchases are tied to the signed-in PlayStation account. On PS5, open your game library, select the PS4 title and download it. Sony also supports transferring or accessing PS4 games and saved data through supported console-transfer methods. The exact transfer route depends on the consoles and network setup, so follow the on-screen transfer instructions rather than assuming that a USB copy alone will move every license or save.

Performance and feature differences

Some compatible PS4 titles benefit from PS5 Game Boost, which can produce a higher or smoother frame rate. Game Boost is not a guarantee of a fixed resolution or frame rate for every game; improvements are title-dependent. Sony recommends trying a game before buying add-ons for it when compatibility is important, because a compatible game can still have missing features or unexpected behavior.

Does every PS4 game have a PS5 version?

No. Backward compatibility and a native PS5 release are separate options. A compatible PS4 game can run on PS5 without any PS5 edition at all. Some eligible titles instead offer a separate digital PS5 upgrade, but availability and price vary by game.

How disc-based upgrades work

  • The source game must qualify for that title’s upgrade offer; there is no universal upgrade for the PS4 library.
  • A disc-based upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The original PS4 disc must remain inserted whenever you play the upgraded digital PS5 version.
  • Digital and disc upgrade rules are set by the publisher and can differ, so check the individual game’s store listing before paying.

Do not buy a PS5 assuming that every PS4 disc automatically becomes a free PS5 edition. The safe assumption is that you are running the PS4 version through compatibility unless the game’s publisher explicitly provides an upgrade.

Can PS4 play PS3, PS2 or original PlayStation games?

No, not natively. Sony’s PS4 FAQ states: “No, PS4 does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games.” That statement concerns inserting and running the older-generation software itself; it does not rule out a publisher releasing a separate PS4 version.

What can work instead

  • Separate PS4 release: Some older games were ported or remastered for PS4. You must own or buy that PS4 edition.
  • Upgrade path: In some cases a publisher offers a PS4 upgrade from another release, with eligibility and pricing set per title.
  • Original disc: An original PS3, PS2 or PlayStation disc is not converted into a PS4 license simply because the PS4 has a Blu-ray drive.

Therefore, a PS4 is a poor choice if your primary goal is to insert a collection of PS3, PS2 or original PlayStation discs. Choose hardware that explicitly supports the generation you own, or locate an official modern version of each game.

Can PS5 play PS3, PS2 or PS1 games?

PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. Sony’s current support information describes PS5 backward compatibility in terms of PS4 games, and Sony’s PS5 FAQ says the console plays PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only. That 99-percent statement was published in the 2020 launch FAQ; for current purchasing decisions, Sony’s support page uses the present wording “overwhelming majority” of PS4 games.

Do not interpret a PS5’s ability to run a modern remake or a separately sold classic as support for the original PS3, PS2 or PlayStation disc. The disc, license and software version remain different products. If you own original PS3, PS2 or PlayStation media, retain compatible older hardware or buy an explicitly released newer edition.

Which PS3 models play PS2 games?

The available official material does not establish a complete, model-by-model answer. Some PS3 hardware revisions are often discussed as having different levels of PS2 support, but it would be unsafe to claim that all PS3 consoles—or even every console in a broad retail family—plays PS2 discs.

How to verify a PS3 before buying

  1. Record the exact model code from the console label or system information, not only the storage capacity or color.
  2. Find a model-specific compatibility list from a reliable primary or specialist source that names that code.
  3. Confirm whether the list covers PS2 discs, downloaded PS2 software, or only software emulation; those are not interchangeable claims.
  4. Check the console’s disc drive, region, controller compatibility and return policy, especially when purchasing used.
  5. Test with the particular PS2 game you intend to play when possible. A model claim alone does not prove every title works.

Until those checks are complete, treat PS3-to-PS2 compatibility as unknown. The confirmed cross-generation fact relevant to a PS5 buyer is that PS5 will not play PS3 discs.

Can PS2 play original PlayStation discs?

Yes. Sony’s official PlayStation history timeline identifies PS2 as backward compatible with original PlayStation discs. That makes PS2 the clearest documented choice in this generation guide for someone who owns original PlayStation media.

When buying a used PS2, inspect the exact console condition, disc drive and regional compatibility, and confirm that the game you want is supported. Backward compatibility does not make a worn laser, damaged disc or incompatible regional release function correctly. Sony’s history page also records more than 160 million PS2 consoles sold worldwide since 2000; that is a historical figure, not a current estimate of working consoles or market availability. See Sony’s PS2 history page for the official description.

Choosing the right console for the games you own

Start with the game’s original generation, then match the physical format and license to the console. Use this checklist before spending money:

  • 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
  • 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
  • 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
  • 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
  • Generation: Is the game a PS4, PS3, PS2 or original PlayStation release?
  • Format: Do you own a disc, a digital license, or neither? A disc requirement can eliminate a digital-only PS5 immediately.
  • Drive: If you need PS4 discs on PS5, verify that the console has a functioning optical drive.
  • Title status: Check the individual game, not only the console generation. Sony warns that a small number of compatible PS4 games can have errors or missing functions.
  • Version choice: Decide whether ordinary PS4 backward compatibility is sufficient or whether a separately sold PS5 edition’s features justify its price.
  • Used hardware: For PS2 or PS3 purchases, verify model code, disc-drive condition, region and return protection.

Mostly digital PS4 purchases PS5 signed in to the purchasing account Eligible games can be downloaded from the library; no disc drive is needed for digital licenses.
PS3 discs Keep or obtain compatible PS3 hardware PS5 and PS4 do not provide native PS3-disc playback.
Original PlayStation discs PS2 or another explicitly compatible platform Sony identifies PS2 as supporting original PlayStation discs.
PS2 discs and a possible PS3 purchase Verify the exact PS3 model first Model-specific support is not universal and is not established by a blanket rule.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying a digital PS5 for a disc collection

Symptom: The PS4 disc cannot be inserted. Fix: Use a PS5 model with a disc drive, or obtain a digital license where the publisher offers one. The digital console cannot be upgraded into a disc reader through software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting a PS4 to read a PS3 disc

Symptom: The PS4 recognizes the disc as unsupported or does nothing useful. Fix: Find a PS4 edition of the game, use original-generation hardware, or choose an officially supported remaster.

Removing the PS4 disc after installation

Symptom: A previously installed game asks for its disc. Fix: Reinsert the disc; installation copies data, but the disc remains the license check for disc-based play.

Assuming compatibility means identical behavior

Symptom: A game launches but a feature, add-on or performance mode behaves differently. Fix: Check the title’s current support notes and test the base game before buying add-ons. Sony specifically warns that some PS4 functionality may be unavailable and some titles may show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5.

Trusting a PS3 family name instead of a model code

Symptom: A used PS3 does not run the PS2 disc you expected. Fix: Confirm the exact hardware revision and test the specific game; do not rely on a seller’s broad statement that the console is “backward compatible.”

Bottom line for each generation

For PS4 games, PS5 is the modern compatibility choice, with a disc-drive model required for physical copies and a signed-in account required for digital purchases. PS4 itself does not natively run PS3, PS2 or original PlayStation games. PS5 does not turn PS3, PS2 or original PlayStation discs into playable media. PS2 is the officially documented route to original PlayStation disc support, while PS3-to-PS2 compatibility must be checked by exact hardware model rather than assumed.
