Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 pairs and tracks through Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets using a Samsung account and SmartThings Find. Samsung’s US materials give both a broad Android 9+ compatibility label and a more specific setup requirement of Android 11 or later with at least 3 GB of free RAM. Those statements describe different levels of compatibility; check Samsung’s page for your country and your exact device before buying.
Will Galaxy SmartTag2 work with my phone?
For owner-side setup and tracking, plan on using a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet. Samsung’s US product specifications list Galaxy devices running Android 9 or later, while the setup note on that same product page specifies a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 11 or later with at least 3 GB of free RAM. Samsung also requires a Samsung account and registration through SmartThings Find.

Because the broad device label and the setup note are not identical, do not assume that every Galaxy device running Android 9 can complete the stated setup or use every feature. Check the exact model, Android version, available free RAM, and requirements on Samsung’s local product or support page. Requirements can vary by feature, region, and software updates. Check these before you buy
- Your phone or tablet is a Samsung Galaxy device.
- It meets the Android and free-RAM requirements Samsung states for setup in your region.
- You can sign in to a Samsung account and register the tag in SmartThings Find.
- If you want Compass View, your exact phone model also has UWB hardware.
Does SmartTag2 work with non-Samsung Android phones or iPhone?
Samsung’s cited setup information does not establish that a non-Galaxy Android phone or an iPhone can register and track SmartTag2 as its owner. Do not treat the tag as a cross-platform tracker based on its Bluetooth connection alone.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
There is one limited interaction that can involve a non-Samsung phone: if the owner has enabled Lost Mode and registered contact details, a finder can read those details by tapping the tag with a phone that supports NFC reading and has internet access. Samsung says this can work regardless of the finder phone’s operating system. It is a way for someone who finds the tag to see the information the owner chose to provide—not a way to pair or track the tag from that phone. Samsung support: Using SmartTag2.
Which Galaxy phones support UWB Compass View?
Compass View is more demanding than basic compatibility. Samsung requires a UWB-enabled Galaxy phone running Android 11 or later, and notes that feature availability can vary by operating system, device, or country. A Galaxy phone that meets the general SmartTag2 setup requirements may not have UWB.

Samsung’s 2023 SmartTag2 announcement named these UWB-capable examples: Galaxy Note20 Ultra; Galaxy S21+, S21 Ultra, S22+, S22 Ultra, S23+, and S23 Ultra; Z Fold2 through Z Fold5; and Z Flip2 through Z Flip5. That is a dated list of examples, not a guaranteed exhaustive or current catalog. Samsung’s current US page also lists compatible phones such as S25-series models, Z Fold6, Z Flip6, S24/S23 models, and selected A-series devices, but its general compatibility list does not establish UWB support for every listed model. What happens when the tag is out of Bluetooth range?
Samsung specifies Bluetooth range of up to 120 m without obstacles. That is a manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a guarantee of the distance you will get in everyday conditions; Samsung warns that obstacles can reduce accuracy. Outside direct Bluetooth range, Samsung says the Galaxy Find Network can help locate the tag through opted-in Galaxy users’ devices when they come within range. This network-based finding does not make SmartTag2 compatible with non-Galaxy phones for owner setup. Samsung’s 2023 SmartTag2 announcement.
