Select Samsung Galaxy flagship and Galaxy A phones support satellite features through specific carriers and regional rollouts. Those features are not interchangeable: emergency SOS, ordinary person-to-person messaging, and carrier-provided satellite service have different phone, country, carrier, and software requirements. A compatible phone also cannot guarantee a satellite connection or rescue.
Which phones support satellite messaging and emergency connectivity?
Here is the practical distinction: Apple and Google document manufacturer emergency satellite services for specified phone generations; Samsung describes support on select Galaxy phones through carrier arrangements. Apple also offers a separate Messages via satellite feature for ordinary communication, while carriers can provide additional satellite messaging or data services on supported devices.

What is the difference between satellite SOS and satellite messaging?
Emergency satellite connectivity is a guided way to contact emergency services when ordinary calls cannot connect. It is not the same as a phone’s usual SOS-only indicator, which may mean cellular service is unavailable or limited; nor is it ordinary texting.

- Lightweight SOS satellite communicator uses the global Iridium satellite network so you can stay connected without cell coverage (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Explore with peace of mind knowing you can trigger an interactive SOS message with location coordinates to Garmin Response℠, a 24/7-staffed international coordination center, for help in an emergency (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Exchange photos, texts and voice messages without cell service; taking and sending photos requires pairing your inReach device with your compatible smartphone by using the Garmin Messenger app (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Rugged design features a high-resolution and scratch-resistant color touchscreen; can withstand impact, extreme weather and harsh temperatures (IP67 water rating)
- Internal, rechargeable lithium battery supports up to 350 hours with 10-minute inReach tracking and up to 95 hours in performance messaging mode
Person-to-person satellite messaging lets you send certain messages to friends or family, where the feature is offered. Apple explicitly says to use Emergency SOS via satellite—not Messages via satellite—in an emergency. Carrier-provided satellite services are a third category: they may enable texting, emergency messaging, or limited data, depending on the operator and terms.
When comparing phones, check which actual task is supported: emergency contact, ordinary messages, location sharing, roadside assistance, or limited satellite data. The phrase “satellite messaging” alone does not establish that a phone can do all of them.
Where are the services available?
Apple Emergency SOS via satellite
Apple’s support page lists availability in Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. This is the list shown on Apple’s support page as of October 3, 2026; local approvals and country-specific minimum iOS versions apply, so check Apple’s current availability and requirements for your destination.

International visitors may be able to use the feature in a supported place, but Apple identifies restrictions for iPhones purchased in certain countries or regions. Devices purchased in Armenia, Belarus, mainland China, Kazakhstan, and Russia have satellite-connectivity restrictions; for devices purchased in Hong Kong and Macao, Apple says satellite connectivity is offered only on iPhone 16e and later. Check Apple’s current country and purchase-location terms rather than assuming that a supported destination makes every regional phone variant eligible.
Apple Messages via satellite
Apple lists Messages via satellite for iPhone 14 or later in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Japan, with an active SIM and supported iOS. iMessage must be enabled before you lose coverage; SMS availability depends on the carrier. Apple’s Messages via satellite guidance includes current availability and setup requirements.
Google Pixel Satellite SOS

The list is from Google’s support page as of October 3, 2026. Samsung Galaxy and carrier services
Samsung says its rollout is phased according to regional network availability and regulatory requirements. Its February 27, 2026 announcement gives examples, not a universal compatibility list:
- United States: T-Mobile’s T-Satellite with Starlink has supported T911, text, and data since 2025 on select Galaxy flagship and Galaxy A devices released after the Galaxy S21 series. Verizon offers eSOS and text on all Galaxy flagship models following the Galaxy S25 series. Samsung said it was also working with AT&T.
- Japan: KDDI has provided satellite text and data and Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System functions on Galaxy S22 and later flagship and Galaxy A devices since 2025. Samsung said select devices were expected to gain features via SoftBank and docomo starting in 2026.
- Europe: Samsung cited support on select devices via Virgin Media O2, joint trials with MasOrange in Spain, and work with Vodafone.
These operator examples do not confirm that every later Galaxy model gets every feature, or that a feature is enabled on every plan. Check the exact combination with both the carrier and Samsung’s rollout announcement.
What do you need to check before relying on a phone?
- Exact model and market variant: Family names are not sufficient, especially for Galaxy carrier support and Apple purchase-location restrictions.
- Country and regulatory availability: Manufacturer and carrier service areas differ and can change.
- Carrier and plan: Carrier-provided services may require a supported operator or qualifying plan; fees or data rates may apply.
- Software, setup, and activation: A supported operating-system version, required APIs, app configuration, active SIM, or satellite-network registration may be necessary.
- Included period and ongoing cost: Apple says its manufacturer satellite features are included for two years after activation on iPhone 14 or later. Carrier services have separate, carrier-specific terms.
- Connection conditions: You generally need to be outside with a clear view of the sky. Trees, terrain, buildings, and other obstructions can delay or prevent a connection.
For iPhone carrier-provided satellite features, Apple specifies iPhone 13 or later, current iOS, and a supported carrier; some carriers require a qualifying plan, and fees or data rates may apply. This is distinct from Apple’s own Emergency SOS and Messages features. See Apple’s carrier-feature requirements.

How do emergency satellite connections work?
On iPhone
- Try calling the local emergency number. Apple says the phone can offer emergency text via satellite if the call does not connect.
- Follow the onscreen prompts and move to a place with a clear view of the sky and horizon.
- Answer the emergency questions and send the information requested through the satellite connection. Preparing Medical ID and emergency contacts in advance can help responders receive relevant information.
Some local emergency numbers require a minimum iOS version. Follow the instructions shown by the phone and any local emergency-service guidance. Apple explains the emergency workflow and requirements.
On Pixel
- Start an emergency call attempt; if cellular service is unavailable, follow the Satellite SOS option and questionnaire.
- Move outside to a clearer location and point the phone as directed by its on-screen guidance.
- Keep following the prompts and remain available for replies. Google notes that response times vary.
Google says required software and APIs must be updated, service registered with the satellite network, and Google Messages set as the default messaging app. You can try the demo at Settings > Safety & emergency > Satellite SOS. Google’s instructions cover setup and the live emergency flow.

Apple says Messages via satellite can take about 30 seconds under ideal clear-sky conditions and more than a minute under light or medium foliage. Heavy foliage or other obstructions may prevent a connection. These are Apple’s guidance figures for its Messages feature, not a service-time guarantee or a comparison with other phones. Photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, and group messages are unsupported in satellite messaging. SMS availability depends on the provider, and fees may apply. Emergency SOS is different: start the phone’s emergency workflow and follow its prompts rather than trying to send an ordinary message for urgent help. A clear sky view improves the chance of connecting, but no satellite-capable phone guarantees a connection, response time, or rescue.
How should you choose between iPhone, Pixel, and Galaxy?
- Name the job: Decide whether you need emergency SOS, routine person-to-person texting off-grid, or a carrier’s satellite texting/data service.
- Match your route and model: Check the destination country and exact regional phone variant against the relevant manufacturer and carrier requirements.
- Confirm service terms: Verify carrier, plan, fees, included period, software, and any registration or app prerequisites.
- Learn the emergency flow before travel: Review the manufacturer’s instructions and, on Pixel, use the Satellite SOS demo in Settings > Safety & emergency > Satellite SOS.
There is no supported cross-brand reliability ranking in the published requirements cited here. The useful comparison is whether the exact phone, service, carrier, software, and location combination meets your needs.
