Google Sheets can cover a handful of lightweight phone tasks—such as displaying QR codes, tracking RSS feeds and organizing temporary contact details—without installing a separate app. Some workflows use built-in Sheets functions; others depend on an external service, and none should be treated as a complete replacement for a dedicated tool. The subscription savings described by Jade Bryan Jardinico in an August 23, 2026 article are a personal account, not a measured result for all users.
What Sheets can—and cannot—replace
Sheets has documented functions for inserting images, importing RSS and Atom feeds, translating text, encoding URL query text and creating hyperlinks. That makes it useful as a flexible utility workspace, especially when a task involves keeping information in rows and columns. But a formula-driven workaround may lack the reliability, privacy controls or specialized features of an app built for that job.

One important distinction: some functions retrieve data from outside the spreadsheet. Google says import functions can require access approval and are subject to usage limits; its guidance describes automatic update checks while a document is open, subject to reasonable use—not guaranteed real-time updates. Google’s Import functions guidance explains those constraints.

Put the text or URL you want encoded in a cell, then use Sheets’ ENCODEURL and IMAGE functions to request and display a QR image. This combines Google’s formula tools with a third-party QR image endpoint; Google is not generating the QR code itself or endorsing that service.

The endpoint is an external service, so avoid putting sensitive information into a QR request. An external-data permission prompt may appear; some URL-based functions require access approval, and approval may need to be granted from Sheets in a desktop web browser.

IMPORTFEED retrieves RSS or Atom feed data into a spreadsheet. Its syntax is IMPORTFEED(url, [query], [headers], [num_items]). The default query is items; optional headers include column labels, and num_items limits how many recent items are returned.

A simple example is =IMPORTFEED(A1), where A1 contains a feed URL. Use this for a compact reading list or monitoring a few feeds, not as a promise of instant alerts. Whether a feed imports successfully and how current its contents appear depends on the feed and Sheets’ external-import behavior and limits.
3. Translate text in a column
GOOGLETRANSLATE(text, [source_language], [target_language]) translates text from one language to another. For a single cell, the formula can reference that cell; an ARRAYFORMULA pattern can extend the workflow down a column, for example:

Here, the formula attempts to detect the source language and return English translations for non-empty cells. Treat the results as a convenience draft: translations can miss context or specialized terminology, and the function is not a guarantee of unlimited bulk processing.

4. Build a lightweight currency table
Jardinico describes asking Gemini to create a table for currency pairs, then changing currencies or adding rows. This can be handy for a quick personal reference, but the cited example does not establish a particular formula, rate source, update timestamp or accuracy comparison. Do not rely on an unverified sheet for a transaction, accounting decision or other financial purpose; confirm rates and terms with an appropriate financial source.
5. Clean up contacts through a CSV
A spreadsheet can make a contact list easier to review in bulk. The proposed workflow is to export contacts from Google Contacts as a CSV, open that file in Sheets, make carefully checked edits, export the result as CSV, and import it again. This is a file-based editing process, not a live connection that synchronizes changes automatically. Before replacing or re-importing contacts, keep an untouched backup and check that names, phone numbers, email addresses and other fields remain in the expected columns.
6. Keep temporary phone numbers in a sheet
For occasional numbers you do not want mixed into your main address book, a sheet can serve as a simple temporary list. Add a HYPERLINK formula to make a cell open a dialer or messaging link. Google documents HYPERLINK as a way to create a link in a cell, but whether a particular WhatsApp or phone link opens correctly depends on device, number formatting and app configuration. Test with a non-sensitive number before relying on the setup.

Google’s official Sheets function list documents the function names and behavior, while its image help page explains inserting images in a spreadsheet. Jardinico’s account of canceling paid subscriptions is a personal experience; it does not quantify savings or show that Sheets replaces the full feature set of dedicated RSS, translation, finance or contact apps.
