The best way to make a PC feel faster is to find what is slowing it down, then try the least risky fix that addresses it. Start with Windows’ built-in update, storage, startup-app, and Task Manager controls; don’t begin by running a generic debloat script or disabling services.
Match the fix to the slowdown
A slow startup, a nearly full drive, and a process using most of the CPU are different problems. Before changing settings, note when the slowdown happens: at sign-in, in one particular app, while multitasking, when storage is low, or throughout ordinary use.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. In Processes, check whether an app is using unusually high CPU, memory, or disk resources while the PC feels slow. The Performance view can help you see which resource is busy. Under Startup apps, review what launches when you sign in. Windows labels can vary slightly by version.

- Slow sign-in: Review startup apps and disable only ones you do not need immediately after signing in.
- One slow app: Check whether that app is consuming resources, and close other unused apps or browser tabs before changing system-wide settings.
- Low free space: Review Windows’ storage tools and remove only files or apps you have checked.
- Persistent high CPU, memory, or disk use: Identify the process in Task Manager before deciding whether to close it or change anything.
Try low-risk Windows fixes first
Install available updates and scan for malware
Check Settings > Windows Update for available updates. Run a malware scan using Windows Security or your established security software; unwanted software can affect performance. Restart if an update or troubleshooting step calls for it.

Trim startup apps selectively
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and inspect each entry. Disable an app only if you recognize it and do not need it to start automatically. Disabling startup does not uninstall the app; you can launch it when needed or re-enable it later.
Uninstall apps you recognize and no longer use
Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or the corresponding Apps settings in Windows 10. Remove only software you recognize and are sure you no longer need. Some apps built into Windows cannot be uninstalled through ordinary Settings controls.

Check background activity and close what you are not using
Close unused programs and browser tabs, and review Task Manager for an app that is consuming resources unnecessarily. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes just because they appear in the list; Windows and other apps may depend on them.

Free storage carefully, not indiscriminately
Low storage can contribute to slower performance and can make installing updates difficult. Deleting arbitrary files does not automatically make a PC faster, so treat cleanup as a way to recover space or make room for updates—not as a guaranteed speed boost.

Review Windows cleanup suggestions
Open Settings > System > Storage. Depending on your Windows version, you may find Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin according to its settings. Cleanup recommendations may surface categories such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
Review the items and categories before removing them. In particular, check personal files and files associated with a recent Windows upgrade; deleting them may remove something you still need or affect your ability to return to a previous version.

Use Disk Cleanup if it is available
On systems without Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup is another built-in option. Review the available categories before confirming deletion, just as you would with other cleanup tools.
Choose an approach by risk and fit

Be wary of aggressive “debloat” changes
Prefer supported Windows Settings and Task Manager controls over scripts that remove apps or disable services in bulk. A generic list cannot know which features you use or what your particular PC needs. If considering a Registry Editor change, Microsoft warns that improper edits can cause system instability, application errors, or prevent Windows from starting. Microsoft advises backing up the registry before editing; for most readers, avoiding casual registry changes is the safer choice.

Power mode is another trade-off, not a universal optimization. Microsoft’s Best performance mode can use more power, drain a laptop battery faster, and make the device warmer. Use it only if the extra performance is worth those costs for your situation.
Decide whether a hardware upgrade is justified
Microsoft notes that older PCs with outdated hardware may see little improvement from software steps and that upgrading may be the better long-term option. That is not a reason to replace parts blindly: first identify the limitation and check what your device supports.
For example, replacing an older hard disk drive with a solid-state drive may be worth investigating if the PC still uses an HDD. An SSD is not a blanket fix for every slow computer. Check the PC manufacturer’s compatibility information and verify the drive interface and physical form factor before buying; a 2020 Outbyte guide describes this as one possible upgrade, not a current compatibility guarantee or a measured performance promise.
