For most Osmo Pocket 3 footage, start with 4K at 24, 25, or 30 fps, choose landscape or portrait before recording, and leave exposure and color on automatic or normal unless you have a reason to control them in editing. Use 50 or 60 fps for smoother motion or slow playback; 4K at 120 fps is available only in Slow Motion mode. The right setup depends on the scene and where the video will be watched.
Choose resolution and frame rate for the finished video
In Normal Video mode, the Pocket 3 records 16:9 video at 4K, 2.7K, or 1080p and offers 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, or 60 fps. DJI also lists square and vertical formats. Choose the format and frame rate before recording so they fit your destination and intended motion. These are documented camera capabilities, not evidence that one combination looks best in every situation. See DJI’s support specifications.

- 4K at 24, 25, or 30 fps: A practical starting point for routine footage when your intended platform supports it.
- 50 or 60 fps: Choose these when you want smoother motion or plan to slow footage in editing.
- 4K at 120 fps: This is a Slow Motion mode option, not a Normal Video frame-rate setting. DJI also lists 1080p at 240 fps for Slow Motion. Check the product specifications for the mode distinction.
Set the orientation before recording
Choose Landscape, Portrait, or Auto-Rotation in the camera settings. Orientation locks for a clip once recording starts, so decide whether you need a horizontal or vertical video before pressing record. This matters most when you are framing specifically for a destination that expects one orientation. DJI explains the options in its Osmo Pocket 3 FAQ.

Auto exposure for changing scenes
Auto is the simplest choice when light may change as you move or when you do not want to monitor camera settings. It lets the camera adjust exposure rather than requiring you to reset it between changing conditions.

Manual exposure for consistency
Manual shutter speed and ISO can help keep exposure consistent across a series of shots, but you must watch for changes in light. On the camera, swipe left on the screen, tap PRO, choose Exposure, then select M. In DJI Mimo’s camera view, switch AUTO to M. DJI’s support page documents the controls; it does not establish one manual exposure setting as best for all scenes.
Match the color profile to your editing workflow
- Normal color: Use this when you want footage that needs little or no color grading.
- D-Log M: Choose this if you plan to grade footage and want a flatter image with more room for post-processing. DJI describes D-Log M as intended to capture a wider dynamic range; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparison showing that every clip will improve. DJI says D-Log M is not a LUT. Its downloads page lists a D-Log M-to-Rec.709 LUT that can be used as a conversion starting point.
- HLG: This is a 10-bit HDR option for an HDR editing and viewing workflow. Choose it when your post-production and destination support HDR.
Do not select a flat or HDR profile just because it sounds more advanced: it is useful only when it fits how you will process and view the video. DJI’s profile details are in its FAQ and downloads.

Choose focus and tracking for the subject
The Pocket 3 offers Single, Continuous, and Product Showcase focus choices. Use the mode that suits whether your subject is still, moving, or an object you are presenting close to the camera. ActiveTrack can be started by double-tapping a subject, but DJI says it is unavailable in Low-Light, Panorama, Slow Motion, and Timelapse modes. If tracking is important, confirm that your chosen capture mode supports it before recording. Details are in DJI’s FAQ.
Set audio for the way you are recording
The camera has three built-in microphones. In Pro mode, directional audio choices are Front, Front and Back, and All; All is the default when Pro mode is off. For an external microphone, DJI documents USB-C digital microphone support or a microphone connected through a 3.5 mm port adapter. Consider an external mic when its placement or connection suits your recording setup better than the built-in microphones. See DJI’s support information.

Use the dedicated modes for time-based footage
For footage that represents a longer period or a moving camera path, DJI lists Hyperlapse, Timelapse, and Motionlapse. Their controls differ:
- Hyperlapse: Adjust resolution, frame rate, and speed.
- Timelapse: Adjust interval and duration in addition to the video settings.
- Motionlapse: Also allows you to set waypoints.
In Pro mode, a timelapse can save source stills alongside the video as Video + JPEG or Video + RAW. The available mode controls are documented in DJI’s support materials.

Check storage and consider accessories only when needed
Footage is saved to a microSD card. DJI lists support for cards up to 1 TB and recommends specific models, including SanDisk Extreme Pro V30 and Kingston Canvas Go! Plus. Check DJI’s current card recommendations before buying, since the capacity limit alone does not confirm that a particular card model is suitable.
For bright scenes where you want more exposure control, DJI lists a Magnetic ND Filters Set as a supported accessory. It also lists a Wide-Angle Lens, Black Mist Filter, Battery Handle, Handle With 1/4-inch Thread, and Mini Tripod. These are optional rather than required for better video; verify that a specific accessory is Pocket 3-compatible and suits your intended use on DJI’s support page.
A quick setup by shooting goal
| Shooting goal | Suggested choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Routine footage with minimal editing | 4K at 24, 25, or 30 fps; normal color; Auto exposure | A straightforward starting point for common delivery workflows. |
| Smoother motion or slow playback | 50 or 60 fps in Normal Video | Higher frame rates suit smoother motion or footage intended to play back more slowly. |
| Slow-motion capture at the highest listed resolution | 4K/120 fps in Slow Motion mode | DJI limits 4K/120 fps to Slow Motion mode. |
| Footage you intend to color grade | D-Log M, with a grading workflow | The flatter profile is designed to give more room for post-processing. |
| HDR production and playback | HLG | Choose it when the editing and viewing chain supports HDR. |
| Vertical-first publishing | Portrait orientation, selected before recording | Orientation locks for the clip once recording starts. |
These choices follow DJI’s published modes and instructions. DJI’s official specifications do not establish a universally best settings combination or an independent performance ranking.
