On a new OpenWrt installation, set a strong root password first, secure Wi-Fi before enabling it, and protect remote administration. Then set the router’s identity and time, confirm its release, and save a configuration backup. Update firmware using the procedure for your device and release; do not blindly upgrade every installed package.
1. Set a strong root password
A fresh OpenWrt installation has no preset root password. Set one at your first login through LuCI or the command line; OpenWrt’s post-installation FAQ explicitly calls this out. Choose a unique, hard-to-guess password and store it safely. Until you set one, administration access is not properly protected.

2. Secure Wi-Fi before turning it on
Wi-Fi is disabled on a fresh installation so you can configure credentials before broadcasting a network. In LuCI, open Network > Wireless, edit the intended radio or network, configure its security and passphrase, then enable it. Save and apply your changes; OpenWrt’s Wi-Fi walkthrough explains the setup flow.

Choose a security mode your devices support
- Use WPA3 when both the router’s radio and your client devices support it.
- If they do not, use WPA2 with a strong, unique passphrase and the mitigation guidance in OpenWrt’s security hardening documentation.
- Enable only the wireless networks you intend to use. Radio capabilities and available options vary by device and build.
Set the correct country code
Set the wireless country code to the place where the router operates. This helps the radio follow the applicable local rules; do not raise transmit power beyond legal limits. The Wi-Fi configuration guide documents the country-code setting.

3. Protect administration access
Use HTTPS for LuCI and encrypted SSH for command-line access rather than exposing unencrypted administration services. Exact package availability and configuration paths vary by release and build, so follow the instructions for your installed version in OpenWrt’s security hardening guide. Avoid making the management interface reachable from the public internet unless you have a specific, carefully secured need.
4. Set the hostname and local time
Give the router a recognizable hostname so it is easier to identify on your network. Set the timezone to your location and confirm time synchronization is configured; accurate timestamps make system logs more useful when diagnosing problems. OpenWrt’s system configuration guide covers hostname, timezone, logging, and NTP settings. The documented timezone default is UTC, which may not match your local time.

5. Save and apply your configuration changes
LuCI and UCI configuration edits can remain staged until you save and apply them. In LuCI, review the pending changes and select Save & Apply when you are ready; for command-line changes, use the relevant configuration commit and service reload procedure documented for that setting. The basic configuration guide explains the staged-change model. If a change could disconnect you, make it from a local connection and change one thing at a time.

6. Record the release and make a backup
Check the installed OpenWrt release and device-specific instructions before changing firmware or packages. The post-installation FAQ points to release information, and the backup and restore guide explains how to create and restore a configuration archive.

- Create a configuration backup after you have completed the initial setup.
- Store the archive somewhere other than the router and note which device and release it belongs to.
- Check what the archive contains and review restore guidance before relying on it. A configuration backup is not a substitute for a firmware image or a device-specific recovery procedure.
7. Update firmware carefully—not by bulk-upgrading packages
OpenWrt firmware upgrades and package operations are different actions. Check the device’s supported upgrade instructions and release notes before proceeding, and keep a restorable backup. OpenWrt’s package management documentation warns against blindly upgrading installed packages: package versions can be incompatible with the installed firmware.
Check which package manager matches your release

These version boundaries are documented in OpenWrt’s package management guide. At the time of the cited release page, OpenWrt lists 25.12.5 as the latest stable release in the 25.12 series, dated 1 July 2026; check the 25.12 release page and your device’s 25.12.5 service release notes for current availability and device-specific caveats. If using LuCI to upgrade, follow the supported firmware-upgrade procedure for your device.

What not to change blindly
- Do not assume every router needs the same WAN, LAN, DNS, firewall, or performance settings. The right choices depend on the router’s role and the network it joins.
- Do not enable Wi-Fi before configuring its security credentials.
- Do not use a package manager command based on a different OpenWrt release.
- Do not treat a firmware sysupgrade as an ordinary package update. Confirm the device’s supported procedure and release notes first.
