Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter an NVIDIA Shield TV update, check which software version is installed, then review display and HDR compatibility, AI upscaling, and audio only if you have a playback or sync problem. An update does not necessarily reset your preferences, so there is no reason to change a setting that is working well.
1. Confirm the installed software version
On the Shield TV, open Settings > Device Preferences > About and check the software version. To look for an update, use Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade. NVIDIA also supports automatic upgrades. Menu wording can vary by model and software generation, so follow the labels shown on your device.

NVIDIA’s release page lists SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.2.4, with security patches updated to January 2026. Its listed fixes include Disney+ playback, third-party remote connections, and a settings-page crash when triggering NVIDIA Share. These release notes describe the changes NVIDIA lists; they do not say that installing an update resets individual users’ settings. Check NVIDIA’s SHIELD software upgrade page for the current release information.
2. Check resolution and HDR against your TV
Open Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound and confirm the selected resolution and display mode suit the TV connected to the Shield. For 4K viewing, NVIDIA specifies a 4K display with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
NVIDIA says HDR10-capable displays are detected automatically. Dolby Vision modes may need to be selected, and Dolby Vision requires support from both the TV and the HDMI path between it and the Shield. Some TVs also require an enhanced, UHD, or similarly named setting to be enabled for the particular HDMI input in use.
- If a resolution or HDR mode is missing, confirm the TV supports it and that the Shield is plugged into a compatible HDMI input.
- Check the TV’s settings for that input; an enhanced-input option may be required.
- If Dolby Vision is still unavailable after those checks, NVIDIA identifies the HDMI cable as a possible cause and suggests trying a higher-quality cable. Treat a cable change as troubleshooting, not a routine post-update purchase.
See NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV user guide for its display and connection guidance.

3. Review AI upscaling based on what you watch
Upscaling is a preference setting, not something every owner needs to change after an update. NVIDIA’s guide describes Enhanced upscaling as enabled by default on the setup it covers and provides AI-Enhanced upscaling plus a demo comparison. Try the demo with the kinds of video you watch and keep the option that looks best to you.
AI-Enhanced upscaling is not available for every source: NVIDIA says it falls back to Enhanced for video below 480p, video above 30 Hz, or RGB color space. Do not assume that AI enhancement applies to all content.

- Control your home entertainment center with SHIELD Remote’s built in IR blaster. Control volume, power, or input source.
4. Change refresh-rate matching only for a specific playback issue
NVIDIA labels Match frame rate experimental. It is not supported by every app and may be difficult for some TVs, so leave it alone unless you are trying to address a particular playback problem. If you do try it, check whether the app and TV behave correctly before treating it as a permanent fix.
Changing the Shield’s display refresh rate system-wide is also a trade-off. NVIDIA warns that choosing a rate other than 60 Hz can make the Android TV home page, games, and 60 Hz video slower. Use the display mode that fits your actual use rather than changing refresh rate just because an update was installed.

5. Check audio settings when sound is wrong or out of sync
If audio works normally, there is no need to reconfigure it after an update. If a format is unavailable or sound is routed incorrectly, check that the Shield’s audio output path matches the equipment in use, such as a TV or AV receiver. HDMI audio format options depend on what the connected devices support.

6. Treat older release notes as history, not a checklist
NVIDIA’s release page also records earlier changes. For example, its 9.2 notes include accessibility improvements, while the 8.0 notes describe a redesigned settings menu, content color-space matching, 720p refresh-rate switching for supported apps, Bluetooth accessory controls, and a USB power-off option for sleep. These are historical release details, not a list of settings every Shield TV owner should change after a current update.
For current setting descriptions and device-specific paths, consult NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV user guide. The guide uses paths such as Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound; older models or software versions may show different wording.
