A driver update is not a signal to apply a universal “best settings” list. First identify whether your GPU and driver still use the classic NVIDIA Control Panel or the NVIDIA app, then check for a specific problem. If a game stutters only on its first launch after the update, the driver may simply be rebuilding its shader cache. For an isolated game issue, adjust that game’s profile instead of changing global behavior.
Start by identifying the NVIDIA software you actually have
NVIDIA’s current GeForce guidance says supported Control Panel features have moved into the NVIDIA app for GeForce users. NVIDIA describes RTX PRO support separately and says professional features will continue in Control Panel while the migration proceeds. Your exact menus therefore depend on the GPU category, driver, software version and installation history.

Existing classic Control Panel installations remain unless you perform a clean installation. NVIDIA also says it will not add new features, fixes or changes to the classic panel. That makes the first post-update step an identification check, not a reset.

- RTX PRO: Control Panel remains part of NVIDIA’s separately described professional workflow, so its Manage 3D Settings page may still be the correct place to work.
- Classic Control Panel still installed: You can use it if the required control is present, but do not assume every current GeForce feature will appear there.
If a setting or page is missing, that can be a software-support difference rather than a failed driver installation. Check the app and GPU category before troubleshooting a control that is not displayed.

Check whether the update caused a settings problem at all
Expect possible first-launch shader stutter
NVIDIA’s help documentation says installing a new driver deletes the shader cache. The first time a game runs afterward, it may stutter while shaders are compiled again. This explains a common post-update symptom without proving that every hitch is shader-related.
Launch the affected game, allow the initial session to complete, and test a second run before changing graphics-driver options. If stutter persists across later launches, compare the game’s own graphics settings, overlays and frame-rate behavior before assuming a global Control Panel value changed.
Look for a repeatable, named symptom
A setting change is justified when you can describe the problem precisely: one title has a rendering glitch, a specific application selects the wrong GPU, or performance behavior changes only under a known workload. A vague feeling that the driver “needs tuning” is not a reason to reset everything.
Understand global settings versus program profiles
The classic Manage 3D Settings page has two distinct scopes:

- Global Settings apply broadly to 3D applications unless a program profile overrides them.
- Program Settings apply to one selected game or application and are the safer place to test a fix that does not affect everything else.
To work in the classic panel, open NVIDIA Control Panel, choose Manage 3D settings, then select Global Settings or Program Settings. In Program Settings, select the affected executable or add it if it is not listed. Make the smallest change that addresses the symptom, click Apply, and relaunch the program when the application must restart to detect the new selection.
A game-specific profile can be restored without discarding intentional global choices. Conversely, changing Global Settings can alter many applications at once, including ones that were working correctly.
Use restore controls deliberately
Restore one program profile
In Program Settings, select the game or application and use its Restore control. This returns that selected profile to its default state while leaving unrelated global settings alone. It is the appropriate first reset when only one title changed behavior after an update.
Restore global settings
In Global Settings, use the global Restore control when you want to remove global customizations. This can affect every 3D application that inherits those values, so record any deliberate choices before confirming.

Restore the entire Manage 3D Settings page
NVIDIA also documents a Restore Defaults link for the whole Manage 3D Settings page. Treat it as a broad reset, not routine maintenance: it can remove carefully chosen application behavior and display-related preferences. After restoring, click Apply and test the original problem before adding any new customization.

Antialiasing: let the game control it by default
NVIDIA identifies Application-controlled antialiasing as the preferred setting for applications that include their own antialiasing controls. Leave it that way after an update unless you are solving a specific compatibility or image-quality issue.
Driver-forced antialiasing can be useful in a narrow case, but it is not a routine post-update optimization. If you test an override, apply it to the affected program profile, change one variable at a time, and compare the result with the game’s native setting. Restore the program profile if the result is worse.

The same ownership question applies to other controls: decide whether the game, the driver or the display should control the feature. A driver override is not automatically superior to an application setting.

Power management: a trade-off, not an across-the-board boost
NVIDIA describes Adaptive as allowing the driver to reduce performance according to application needs. Prefer maximum performance runs the GPU at maximum performance for most 3D applications. Those descriptions define different power policies, not a universal “slow” and “fast” switch.
Use Prefer maximum performance only for a repeatable issue or an application that demonstrably needs sustained maximum performance. Test it in that program’s profile first. Applying it globally can keep the GPU at higher performance states in applications that do not benefit, increasing energy use, temperature and fan noise.
If the problem is a single game’s frame-time instability, note the game, resolution, display path and reproduction steps before changing power policy. Without a controlled comparison, a perceived improvement may come from shader recompilation finishing or another update-related change rather than the power setting itself.

A safe post-update workflow
- Identify the software path. Determine whether you are using NVIDIA app or classic Control Panel and whether the GPU is GeForce or RTX PRO. Do not follow instructions for a page your installation does not provide.
- Reproduce the symptom. Record the game or application, when the problem appears, and whether it affects one title or several.
- Allow shader rebuilding. If the first launch stutters, complete a test run and launch again before changing settings.
- Inspect the program profile. In Control Panel, open Manage 3D settings, choose Program Settings and select the affected application. In the NVIDIA app, use the corresponding per-game controls available for your version.
- Restore narrowly if needed. Use the selected program’s Restore control before touching Global Settings. Use global Restore only when the evidence points to a broad customization problem.
- Keep application-controlled features application-controlled. For antialiasing, start with Application-controlled when the game has its own option.
- Test power policy only for a named need. Compare Adaptive with Prefer maximum performance in the affected program, not as a blanket change.
- Apply and relaunch. Click Apply after changes. Restart the game or application when the selected GPU or another preference requires a relaunch to take effect.
- Escalate only after isolation. If the issue affects multiple applications after a second launch and a narrow profile reset, investigate the driver installation, game files, overlays or hardware-specific conditions instead of stacking more Control Panel overrides.
Common mistakes after a driver update
Applying an old “best settings” list
Control availability and effect depend on the GPU, driver, application and display routing. A list copied from an older driver can recommend controls that have moved, disappeared or behave differently. Use the settings page’s descriptions and change only what addresses a current problem.
Resetting everything before identifying the scope
A full-page Restore Defaults can erase intentional profiles. Start with the affected program, then widen the reset only if multiple applications show the same behavior.
Forcing driver overrides that the game already supports
When a title exposes antialiasing controls, NVIDIA’s documented preference is Application-controlled. Forcing a second control layer can produce unexpected image quality or compatibility results.
Calling Prefer maximum performance a guaranteed frame-rate fix
NVIDIA’s description concerns GPU performance policy, not a promise of higher FPS. It can increase power and heat without changing a bottleneck elsewhere in the system.

Shader-cache deletion during driver installation can make the first run different from later runs. Test again after the cache has been rebuilt before editing profiles.
When no Control Panel change is the right change
If the game is smooth after its first post-update run, leave your settings alone. If a control is absent in the current NVIDIA app or Control Panel, verify software and GPU support rather than trying to recreate it with unrelated options. If only one application is affected, keep the fix in that application’s profile. And if a global reset would remove working customizations without addressing a reproducible symptom, do not perform it.
The practical rule is simple: identify the software path, wait out possible shader-cache rebuilding, isolate the affected application, and make the narrowest documented change. A driver update by itself does not require a new set of NVIDIA Control Panel values.
