Start by setting myQNAPcloud access to Private if you alone need remote access, or Customized if you need to invite specific people. Use Public only when you deliberately want anyone to find the device and view its published services. After that, limit published services, keep UPnP disabled, secure accounts, and maintain the NAS software.
1. Choose who can find and access the NAS
For a standalone NAS, the access mode determines its visibility and who can use it through myQNAPcloud. QNAP’s QTS 5.1.x access-control guide describes three choices:

These modes apply to standalone devices. For a NAS enrolled in an organization, administrators control whether all organization administrators or only selected administrators can access and manage it; review that setting with the organization’s access policy.
2. Publish only the services you use
Check the published-services list and disable anything your workflow does not require. QNAP’s security guidance recommends configuring access control and publishing only necessary services. The QTS 5.1.x service-publishing guide explains the service settings. Fewer published services mean fewer entry points exposed through the myQNAPcloud configuration.

3. Leave UPnP disabled; forward ports only when needed
QNAP’s QTS 5.2.x security guide says: “To ensure your data security, UPnP is disabled by default. We recommend manually configuring port forwarding settings on your router.” Follow that recommendation rather than enabling automatic router configuration. Manual port forwarding is not a requirement for every owner: use it only if your chosen remote-access method needs it. Router menus and capabilities vary by model.
Access mode, published services, and router connectivity are separate decisions. A restricted access mode does not make an unnecessary published service useful, and a forwarding rule does not decide which users should have access.

4. Pick the remote-access feature that matches your need
- myQNAPcloud Link: Provides remote access through QNAP mobile apps, desktop utilities, and the website without changing router settings. See QNAP’s QTS 5.1.x setup guide.
- DDNS: Maps a domain name to a dynamic IP address so you can keep using the same URL. DDNS does not determine which users may access the NAS.
- Port forwarding: Configures router connectivity for arrangements that require incoming connections. QNAP recommends configuring required forwarding manually rather than relying on UPnP.
These features solve different problems; you do not need to turn on all of them. Check the guide for the NAS’s installed QTS or QuTS hero version because labels and functions may differ between versions and models.
5. Protect accounts and permissions
Enable two-step verification for accounts that support it, use strong passwords, remove unknown or suspicious accounts, and limit general-user permissions. QNAP’s security recommendations cover these practices. Two-step verification requires a compatible authenticator application; some methods also require myQNAPcloud and a QNAP ID for internet access. 6. Keep firmware and apps current
Update NAS firmware and installed apps to current versions, and use QNAP’s security utilities as appropriate. Follow the security guide for your exact operating-system version rather than assuming that instructions for another QTS or QuTS hero release match your menus.
