What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by adjusting pointer speed—not by chasing a particular DPI number. Make small changes until ordinary hand movements move the pointer across the screen without repeated lifting or overshooting. Keep acceleration and other mouse settings as they are at first; change them only if you notice a specific problem.
1. Adjust pointer speed first
Pointer movement may be controlled by the mouse itself, its companion software, your operating system, or more than one of these. The right setting depends on the mouse, screen size, operating-system settings, and how far you prefer to move your hand. There is no universal DPI target for a vertical mouse.

- Connect the mouse and check whether it has dedicated tracking-speed buttons or companion software.
- Begin at a comfortable middle or default speed. Move the pointer through ordinary tasks, such as reaching screen edges and selecting small targets.
- Change one speed control by a small amount at a time. Aim for enough reach without repeated lifting, while retaining the control your work needs.
- Keep the operating-system pointer-speed setting stable while you test any device-level speed control. If you later change the operating-system setting, do so separately so you can judge its effect.
DPI is a mouse’s tracking sensitivity, not a recommendation for how fast your pointer should feel. For example, Logitech lists the MX Vertical as having an adjustable 4000-DPI sensor and two default cursor-speed presets, 1000 DPI and 1600 DPI. Those are specifications and defaults for that model, not standards for vertical mice or targets for every user. Logitech says its speed can be customized in Logitech Options: MX Vertical getting-started guide.

In Windows, the setting is called “Enhance pointer precision.” Microsoft describes it as helping pointer accuracy when the mouse moves slowly, but that does not establish one best setting for everyone switching to a vertical mouse. Keep your existing choice initially. If pointer movement feels inconsistent, compare the on and off settings using the tasks you actually do, changing no other speed control at the same time.

3. Change buttons and scrolling only for a reason
A vertical shape does not require different button assignments, double-click speed, or scroll behavior. Leave them unchanged unless a control feels wrong or your setup calls for a change—for example, if you need the primary button on the opposite side. If the wheel feels too fast or too slow, adjust scrolling; remap extra buttons only when a mapping would help your actual workflow.
4. Find the settings in Windows
Windows 11
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse for pointer speed, “Enhance pointer precision,” primary button, and scrolling. Additional mouse settings include double-click speed. Microsoft’s instructions are on its Change mouse settings page.

Windows 10
Microsoft documents mouse controls under Settings > Devices > Mouse. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so this path is for that older version and may not match every current Windows setup. See Microsoft’s mouse settings instructions.
5. Check model-specific controls and hand position
Controls and software vary by mouse. Logitech says tracking speed and individual buttons can be customized in Logi Options+ on Windows and macOS; availability depends on the model. Check the support page for your exact device rather than assuming that another mouse uses the same app or features. Logitech’s MX Vertical guide also advises keeping the hand natural and relaxed and avoiding unnecessary wrist extension. Treat that as manufacturer use guidance, not proof that a particular setting prevents or cures pain.
