That makes them useful examples for players asking, “Which MMOs are still active in 2026?” or “What MMOs are still getting regular updates?” It does not establish which game has the most active players: the official announcements below document updates and events, not independently measured current populations.
What does “active” mean for an MMO in 2026?
For this comparison, an active MMO is one receiving visible game support—such as new systems, quests, combat changes, access improvements, or seasonal events—alongside signs of community engagement. Those are observable indicators of ongoing service, not a substitute for concurrent-player statistics. Anniversary events, votes, roadmaps, and cumulative account totals do not show how many people are playing now.

Final Fantasy XIV: new systems, access improvements, and seasonal events
Square Enix’s official Patch 7.5 notes document several kinds of continued development: regional matching across worlds within a region, additional Duty Support, and a housing update. The patch also expands the game’s entry point. The Starter Edition and free trial include A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers, with progression available up to level 80.

Community activity extends beyond gameplay patches. On August 24, 2026, Square Enix announced The Rising, a seasonal event marking the thirteenth anniversary of the game’s rebirth. Its quest and rewards were available August 27 through September 10, 2026; those dates have passed, so it is evidence of a 2026 event, not a currently available activity.
The Elder Scrolls Online: a season-based 2026 structure
Bethesda’s Season Zero announcement describes a new season-based content structure. Season Zero ran from April 2 to July 8, 2026, and included player-facing improvements, class and combat redesigns, zones, and challenges. Its announced dates have passed; these are delivered historical updates, not a description of a season still in progress.

- The Lord Of The Rings: Shadows Of Angmar
Bethesda said gameplay features, systems, and improvements were free for current ESO players, with exceptions for premium Tamriel Tome options and additions associated with ESO Plus. That distinction matters: the announcement describes free access to the stated core gameplay improvements, not a claim that every seasonal extra or subscription benefit is free.
RuneScape: released expansion content and a broader roadmap
RuneScape’s 2026 support includes both shipped content and future-facing plans, which should not be confused. Jagex’s 2026 roadmap announcement covered systems modernization, an avatar refresh, Havenhythe, Leagues II, and RuneFest. A roadmap records announced intentions; it does not by itself establish that each item has been released.

- Engage in Heroic Star Wars Combat - Fight against reactive enemies battles

One substantial update did ship: Jagex’s March 23, 2026 Havenhythe part one announcement describes new quests, two bosses, fish farming, and Hunter content with the skill’s level cap increased to 110. Jagex also says RuneScape is available on PC and mobile with cross-platform progression.
Jagex’s roadmap announcement says nearly 125,000 players voted in November 2025 on the future of the Treasure Hunter daily activity mechanic, which was subsequently removed. That is evidence of a specific community vote and outcome, not a current player-count estimate. The same announcement says RuneScape has welcomed over 300 million player accounts; this is a cumulative account figure, not the number of active users. RuneFest was announced with capacity for 6,000 attendees, which is planned capacity rather than reported attendance.

- Comfortable Contoured Shape: Sculpted to fit the contours of your palm, regardless of hand size or grip style, with a right-side finger rest for added support.
- Look at the kind of updates. FFXIV’s cited material covers systems, access, housing, and a seasonal anniversary event. ESO’s Season Zero centered on seasonal structure, gameplay improvements, class and combat redesigns, zones, and challenges. RuneScape’s cited shipped update added quests, bosses, and skill content, while its roadmap also named broader systems work.
- Check the access model. FFXIV’s official patch page gives a specific free-trial and Starter Edition scope: four named game installments, up to level 80. ESO’s announcement distinguishes free gameplay improvements from premium Tamriel Tome options and ESO Plus additions. The cited RuneScape announcement confirms PC and mobile availability but does not establish an access price here.
- Match the game to your preferred play style. The cited announcements identify story and quest content in FFXIV and RuneScape, class and combat redesigns plus zones and challenges in ESO, and bosses and Hunter content in RuneScape. These examples can help you identify the kind of play each update emphasizes; they do not prove that one game offers more total content or suits every player.
- Consider platforms and progression. Jagex specifically says RuneScape supports PC and mobile with cross-platform progression. The cited FFXIV and ESO announcements do not establish comparable platform details, so check their current official access information for the platform you use.
- Read roadmaps as plans, not release records. For any live-service game, distinguish a dated announcement of intended content from confirmation that content has shipped. The Havenhythe part one announcement is a released-update example; items on RuneScape’s broader roadmap should be treated according to their individual release status.
