On Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, and Android, that means Bedrock Edition. On Mac or Linux, choose Java Edition. A Windows PC purchase includes both Java and Bedrock, so you can launch the one that fits your plans.
If you want to play with people on console or mobile, Bedrock is usually the right choice. If you want Java mods or Java community servers, choose Java. The editions do not join one another’s standard multiplayer games, so check with your friends before you buy.

Which Minecraft Edition Should You Buy for PC, Console, or Mobile?
There is no edition that is best for every player. Your device narrows the options, and the people you want to play with often settle the choice. Java Edition is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock Edition is available on Windows, consoles, and mobile devices. On Windows, the Java & Bedrock PC bundle gives you access to both editions; you still need to launch the same edition as the people you want to join.
Quick recommendation by device and goal
| Your situation | What to choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC; you want mods, Java servers, or friends who play Java | Launch Java Edition | Java is the edition associated with community mods and Java multiplayer servers. |
| Windows PC; you want to play with console or mobile friends | Launch Bedrock Edition | Bedrock supports cross-play among Windows, consoles, and mobile. |
| Mac or Linux | Java Edition | Java is the available native edition on these platforms; Bedrock is not offered there as a native edition. |
| Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, or Android | Bedrock Edition | Bedrock is Minecraft’s console and mobile edition. |
| You are not sure what your friends play | Ask whether they launch Java or Bedrock before buying | The editions cannot join each other’s ordinary multiplayer sessions. |
| Your family wants local split-screen on a console | Bedrock on a supported console | Minecraft’s comparison lists split-screen for console Bedrock, not Java. Check the current store details for your specific console. |
Can you play Minecraft cross-platform?
Cross-play follows edition boundaries. Bedrock players can play together across supported Windows, console, and mobile platforms. Java players can play together across Windows, macOS, and Linux. A Java player cannot join a standard Bedrock game, and a Bedrock player cannot join a standard Java game.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Minecraft’s official comparison describes Bedrock cross-play across Windows 10 and Windows 11, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, PS4, and mobile. Platform availability can change, so check the current listing for your device and region before purchasing. The key buying question is not merely whether your friend plays on a PC or console: ask which edition they launch.
Check before joining
- Ask each friend whether they play Java or Bedrock. “Minecraft on PC” is not specific enough because Windows supports both.
- Confirm that everyone will use the same edition. On Windows, a player with the bundle can switch editions, but must start the matching one.
- Use a current game release and a stable internet connection, or the same local network when playing locally.
- For a private hosted world, choose the Realm product that matches the edition: Java Realms for Java players and Bedrock Realms Plus for Bedrock players.
Minecraft’s current store comparison lists Realms as supporting up to 10 friends at a time. That is a current product detail, not a permanent limit guaranteed for every future version or service configuration.
What is the difference between Java and Bedrock?
Both editions offer the core Minecraft experience, but they are built around different platforms and ecosystems. Java is the natural fit for players who want community-created mods and third-party Java servers. Bedrock is designed for broad device compatibility, controller and touch input, and Minecraft Marketplace content. Those differences affect who you can play with and how you customize the game more than they establish one edition as universally superior.

| What matters | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Supported platforms | Windows, macOS, and Linux | Windows, supported consoles, and mobile devices |
| Cross-play group | Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux | Bedrock players on Windows, consoles, and mobile |
| Customization | Community mods and third-party server ecosystem | Minecraft Marketplace, character customization, and add-ons |
| Controls | No native controller support, according to Minecraft’s official store FAQ | Controller input is supported; mobile also offers touch controls |
| Local split-screen | Not listed for Java in Minecraft’s comparison | Listed for console Bedrock; verify the specific console’s current store information |
Mods, servers, and Marketplace content
Choose Java if community mods or Java-specific third-party servers are central to how you want to play. That ecosystem may involve finding and managing community-created content yourself. The range of available mods and the steps to install them depend on the individual creator or server; they are not a built-in guarantee that every mod works with every game release.
Bedrock is the fit for players who want to browse Minecraft Marketplace content, use its add-ons, or customize their character through the in-game store. Marketplace content and Minecoins belong to the Bedrock content ecosystem. They are not interchangeable with Java mods, and you should not assume that worlds, add-ons, or purchases transfer freely between editions.
Controls and playing together at home
Bedrock supports controller input and is the edition used on consoles; mobile Bedrock also supports touch controls. Minecraft’s official store FAQ says Java “does not have native controller support at this time.” If controller play is important on a Windows PC, Bedrock is the straightforward choice. A controller is not required to play either edition.

Minecraft’s official comparison lists split-screen for console Bedrock, which can make it suitable for a family sharing a supported console. It does not list split-screen for Java. Because local multiplayer features can depend on the exact console and current product listing, confirm the details for your device before buying on the assumption that a particular setup will work.
Does the Windows PC bundle include both editions?
Yes. Minecraft’s Windows Java & Bedrock PC bundle includes both editions. That gives a Windows buyer flexibility: launch Java for Java friends, mods, or Java servers, or launch Bedrock to play with Bedrock players on console and mobile. Owning both does not merge their multiplayer networks, make one edition compatible with the other, or make Bedrock available as a native Mac or Linux edition.
For a Windows household with different preferences, the bundle can avoid having to choose one edition for everyone. Each player still needs to coordinate the edition for a shared game. If you are buying for a friend, ask what edition the rest of their group uses rather than assuming that everyone who says “Minecraft on PC” means Java.

What PC hardware does each edition require?
Minecraft’s current official PC store comparison lists different memory requirements for Java and Bedrock. These figures are system requirements, not benchmark results, and should be checked against the current store page and your computer before purchase.
| Edition | Minimum memory listed | Recommended memory listed |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 8 GB with a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics | 16 GB |
| Bedrock Edition | 4 GB | 8 GB |
The Java minimum has two configurations, so do not read “8 GB” as a universal minimum: the listed minimum is 12 GB when using integrated graphics. Memory is only one part of whether a PC will run the game well; graphics hardware, operating system, drivers, and the specific content or settings you use also matter. Check the complete, current requirements for your edition rather than treating the memory line as a performance promise.
Before buying for a PC
- Confirm whether the computer runs Windows, macOS, or Linux. The bundle with both editions is for Windows; Mac and Linux buyers should choose Java.
- On Windows, compare the full current system requirements with the computer’s hardware, including whether it uses integrated or discrete graphics.
- If multiplayer is the priority, identify your friends’ edition before deciding which one to launch.
- If you need controller support or Bedrock Marketplace content, plan to use Bedrock rather than assuming the Java version offers the same features.
What accounts and subscriptions do console and mobile players need?
Console and mobile players use a Microsoft account for Minecraft. Child accounts may also need multiplayer permissions enabled before they can join online games. If multiplayer is unavailable for a child account, check its account permissions rather than assuming the edition or game is broken.
Best Value
Online multiplayer on console can require a separate subscription from the console platform. Minecraft’s current support guidance lists Xbox Game Pass Core for Xbox, PlayStation Plus for PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online for Nintendo Switch. These are platform online-play requirements, not part of the Java-versus-Bedrock distinction. Check the platform’s current terms for your location and account before relying on online access. This subscription note concerns online console multiplayer; it does not establish that every local or single-player mode requires a subscription.

How to make the final choice
- Start with the device. On console or mobile, choose Bedrock. On Mac or Linux, choose Java. On Windows, you can use either edition through the bundle.
- Match the people you want to play with. Ask whether they use Java or Bedrock, then launch that edition. This matters even when everyone owns Minecraft on a computer.
- Choose your preferred ecosystem. Pick Java for community mods and Java third-party servers; pick Bedrock for Marketplace content, mobile touch controls, controller support, and cross-play with console or mobile.
- Check local play and hardware. For console split-screen, confirm support for the exact console. For a PC, review the current system requirements for the intended edition.
- Account for online access. Console online multiplayer may need a separately sold platform subscription; console and mobile users need a Microsoft account, and child accounts may need multiplayer permissions.
If you have a Windows PC and genuinely want both ecosystems, the bundle lets you choose per session. On other devices, platform compatibility sets the choice: Java for Mac and Linux, and Bedrock for console and mobile.
