1. Fit the headset and align the lenses
Adjust the headset and strap until the view is clear and the headset feels stable and comfortable. Quest 3 uses a continuous slider for interpupillary distance (IPD), so make small adjustments while looking at clear text or a menu. 2. Set a boundary for the room you have
Choose a stationary or room-scale play area to match your activity and available space. Meta lists 6.5 by 6.5 feet as the minimum room-scale area and recommends additional clearance around walls, furniture, and other obstructions. Clear hazards before playing, and redraw the boundary if the room layout changes. Meta’s room-scale guidance provides the stated minimum.
Space Sense can show outlines of people, pets, and objects that cross the boundary. Treat it as an extra awareness feature, not a substitute for clearing the play area. Meta’s Space Sense help page describes the feature.

3. Choose passthrough and hand tracking for how you play
Quest 3 supports full-color passthrough and hand tracking. Passthrough can help you see your surroundings without taking off the headset, while hand tracking offers controller-free interaction in compatible experiences. They are options, not universal performance or comfort improvements; use the controls and current labels shown in your headset rather than relying on a menu path that may change between Horizon OS releases.
If you enable hand or body tracking, review the privacy controls in the headset or Meta Horizon app. Meta says raw images from hand and body sensors are processed on the device and overwritten instantaneously when those tracking features are enabled. That statement concerns the raw sensor images; it does not describe every kind of information derived from tracking. Meta’s privacy policy provides the relevant privacy information.

4. Turn on Battery Saver only when its trade-off works for you
Meta lists Quest 3 battery life at approximately two hours; that is a vendor estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. If extending a session matters more than display behavior, the documented setting is Settings > General > Power > Battery Saver. Meta says it reduces brightness to 40%, sets fixed foveated rendering to level 3, lowers refresh rate to 72 Hz, and disables certain CPU/GPU boosts. Meta does not quantify the extra runtime this provides. Meta’s Battery Saver documentation lists the setting location and effects.
5. Leave advanced refresh-rate configuration alone unless you have a specific reason
Quest 3 supports refresh rates up to 120 Hz, but that does not mean every app runs at 120 Hz. Meta’s developer reference lists 72, 80, 90, and 120 Hz and explains configuration through Android system properties using ADB. Those instructions are for developers, not a verified consumer settings route, and the changes do not persist after reboot. For ordinary use, there is no need to follow the ADB instructions just to configure the headset. Meta’s refresh-rate developer reference documents those values and limitations.

What should I change first on a Quest 3?
- Adjust the fit and IPD until the headset is comfortable and the image is clear.
- Set a boundary that reflects the real play area, then clear nearby obstructions.
- Choose passthrough and hand tracking if they help with your surroundings or compatible apps, and check the relevant privacy controls.
- Enable Battery Saver when you accept its lower brightness and 72 Hz refresh rate in exchange for a power-saving configuration.
Do I need to buy an accessory?
No accessory is a required first setting. If fit remains uncomfortable after adjusting the included headset, or if you want supplemental power, consider a compatible comfort or battery accessory as a separate choice. Meta’s approximately two-hour battery estimate may help you decide whether extra power matters, but the cited specifications do not establish that a particular accessory is best or guarantee how much additional runtime it will provide. Check compatibility for any product before buying.
