For MemoryCleaner by TheUserWW, start with Immediate Cleanup only when you have a specific reason to try clearing memory. Leave automatic cleanup off until you know whether manual runs help your situation. There is no documented checkbox combination or timer that is best for every Windows PC, and the project cautions that frequent cleaning may affect performance.
First, make sure you have the right MemoryCleaner
This guide covers MemoryCleaner by TheUserWW, whose settings are documented in its GitHub project. It is not the separate Windows Memory Cleaner project; similarly named apps can have different controls and behavior.
SourceForge lists TheUserWW’s app for 64-bit Windows 8, 10, and 11, and its files page identifies v1.1.2 as the latest version, modified February 12, 2026. Those listings do not establish that every setting behaves identically across Windows releases or specify the app’s default selections.
What the six memory-area settings mean
The project README describes these options as different targets, not six interchangeable ways to free RAM. Select only the areas that fit the maintenance task you have in mind.

| Setting | Documented target | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Working Set | Working-set memory of the current process. | Narrower scope than System WS; the README does not define a recommended use or expected performance gain. |
| System WS | Working-set memory of all processes. | Broad scope; requires administrator privileges. The project warns that cleaning the system working set may temporarily stall some applications. |
| Standby List | The standard standby memory list. | A different memory area from a process working set; the README does not recommend selecting it as a default. |
| Low Priority Standby List | Low-priority standby memory. | Separate from the standard standby list; no universal selection guidance is documented. |
| Modified Page List | The modified-page list. | A distinct list target; the project does not quantify the effect of clearing it. |
| Combined Page List | The combined-page list. | A separate target; no preferred setting is published. |
Working Set and System WS are the two options whose names most directly signal scope: the current process versus all processes. The other four name memory lists. The README describes what each targets, but does not show that selecting more areas improves speed or recommend a standard bundle.
Manual cleanup or automatic cleanup?
Use Immediate Cleanup for a deliberate one-time run
The README’s usage instructions say to select the memory-area types to clear and then choose Immediate Cleanup. This is the more controlled starting point: you decide when to run cleanup rather than having it happen in the background on a recurring schedule.

Enable Automatic Cleanup only if you have a reason
To automate the task, enable Automatic Cleanup and set an interval. The project does not establish an ideal interval or document the allowed range, so avoid treating a short timer as a performance tweak. Its warning is explicit: “Frequent memory cleaning may affect system performance.”
A cautious way to choose settings
- Confirm the app: use the TheUserWW MemoryCleaner project, not the separate Windows Memory Cleaner app.
- Start with manual operation: select only the area or areas relevant to the problem you are trying to address, then run Immediate Cleanup.
- Be conservative with System WS: it applies across processes and requires administrator privileges. The project says it can temporarily stall some applications.
- Observe what happens: MemoryCleaner offers real-time memory monitoring, a system-tray icon showing memory usage, and detailed cleaning records. A lower memory reading alone does not demonstrate that Windows or an application is running faster.
- Keep automation optional: if you choose Automatic Cleanup, use an interval that reflects an actual need rather than assuming more frequent cleaning is better.
What these settings cannot tell you
The app documents its cleanup targets and cautions, but the project materials do not establish a universally best configuration, a performance improvement, or a schedule for all PCs. Memory usage readings are not, by themselves, proof that a system needs cleanup. If a particular workload consistently needs more memory than the PC has installed, investigate that capacity issue separately; changing cleanup checkboxes is not a substitute for matching hardware to the workload.
